The further back in time you go, the bigger the pool is to choose from, and the greater number of anime that stands the test of time you may come across.

That's my perspective as someone who also skews towards newer shows and wasn't around watching anime pre-2010.

Literally click on a random 80s OVA and watch it.

If you don't watch the influential stuff you won't really get context of newer stuff influenced by it.

I would say watch great teacher Onizuka and school rumble. The reason is that they are fun to watch. Popular stuff is only relevant if you plan to socialize about it.

Old stuff's pretty good imo. Very often better than new stuff.

You shouldn't watch something just because people tell you too. You should only seek out shows that you're curious or interested about.

Because there are a lot of really good anime that didn't come out within the last 15 years, and it would be a shame to miss them. That's really the only reason you should need, right? The year an anime is made shouldn't make any difference. It'll also be a really nice chance of pace, since every era of anime kind of has its own "feeling" to it. If you stick too closely to just the same kind of anime all the time, it's going to get boring fast. The best thing you can do is to make sure you watch a wide variety. Check out things you don't even think you'll like, and you might find a lot of pleasant surprises.

That said, if you feel more comfortable with newer anime at the moment, there's nothing wrong with that either. You can branch out to older stuff any time.

I would recommend skipping the original Sailor Moon for now. It's not a bad series by any means, but it's very long and very repetitive. If you're just getting into anime, there's a lot out there that's probably more worth your time. If you want to try some older stuff without committing to a long series, it might be better to start with movies, OVAs, or shorter series.

Well, the main problem is being able to find those old anime series on the Internet, which can be challenging. I know where those old shows are posted, but I cannot share those links here...for legal reasons.

Firstly: why frame the question this way, as if a series being older is a bad thing? It's not. Secondly: Sailor Moon isn't even that old. Thirdly: WTF? 1995-2010?! How the hell are you suggesting 2010 anime are old? They most certainly are not!

Now that said, if Sailor Moon looks like it interests you, just go watch it already!

I never understood it, it would be like refusing to read a book because it was written before a certain date. You're there for the story/characters right? To be entertained. So if something exists that is right up your alley but the only thing preventing you from starting it is its date of origin then idk what to tell you. Like I'm sorry but if the main reason someone likes an anime is because of the flashy visual hype that gets their attention then why even bother engaging with a story when they can just watch tiktok edits with the subway surfer guy on the bottom half of the screen.

When I said City Hunter is absolute cinema from episode 1 on that recommendations thread, I genuinely meant it. Trust me, just give the first episode a shot on Crunchyroll (Or pirate it), and you'll know pretty quickly if it's for you or not. It's one of those anime where you don't need to 3 episode rule it, as 1 episode is enough to know if you'll like the rest of it.

IDK, you don't have to...if you don't want to don't.....does what we say matter?

Also do the 80s and 70s not exist for you lol?

Anyway, the advantages it has compared to modern anime is one cell shade animation which does have a unique visual quality to it that does stand out and isn't really replicated by anything today. Of course, fans not familiar with older animation may not appreciate it. Regardless, you have some really good sakuga and character designs in the 80s and 90s, that are going to look very different from modern stuff. I would argue older character designs suffered less from same face syndrome compared to today.

Genre wise, if you are a big fan of science fiction like me, the peak of that genre within anime was from the late 70s into the early-mid 2000s. Modern anime doesn't really cater to sci fi fans much, outside of rare occasions. The OVA market had a lot of short series, you can watch quickly and they generally are more uncensored than a lot of titles you see in the seasonal grind, though streaming is starting to open up things.

I guess additionally some of the best shows I have seen in anime, like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Full Metal Alchemst Brotherhood, Ghost in the Shell 95/SAC, Cowboy Bebop, Armored Trooper Votoms and Monster came out in those years so.....I mean yeah, wanting to watch good anime, would be a good reason to watch those decades lol. Honestly the 2000s and 80s are some of my favorite eras.

Ignore what they said.
Only watch what you feel like watching, not what people ask you to.

Let me redpill you that anime fans are useless when it comes to getting new people deeper into the media, their "starter packs" are simply what they watched at the time.
And depending on how normie they are, it's quite possibly that they barely watch any new stuff, and are just stuck on low-quality groups discussing those same oens because "those were the ones everyone watched".

If you need reasons, then don't.
Keep watching newer stuff, just grabs seasonals you think are interesting and keep watching then every season (If you don't know what is a seasonal, let me know and I can teach you everything), then look for similar anime to the ones you liked the most.
Do this until you've formed your tastes, a nice foundation, then the "spirit" of looking for older stuff will naturally appear in you, and naturally taking part on discussions will make you attracted to certain anime.

Generally I think the reason many people did tell you about older anime is that a lot of people naturally either started their anime career there or pivoted to older shows over time.
Usually I would say it’s good to watch the newer stuff and get to talk about anime and get comfy with the community but there are a lot of gems which aired some years ago and also did influence a lot of anime. It’s genuinely fun to watch those series before anime got a boom and a ton of shows just show the love of the people behind those series, but also it’s a good dive into anime history. Nowadays I get the feeling that a ton of anime are just the same product and then I love to go back to an older series.
Just keep in mind that the animation is different and va are more crude than now, but older anime just do have a good vibe.

Ah, and don’t just go watch what everyone tells you, shows can be bad but have a nostalgic tone to a mass or simply don’t fit you. It’s ok to ask for recommendations, but always look if you like this anime first. A good way is to ask for anime like xxx to get an anime with the same vibe or personally I recommend to just dive in some challenges here on MAL since they do give you a wide range of anime to watch

You should watch them if you expect to like them.
