What happened to courtesy lol? They just end without a word nowadays, no goodbye, no nothing. After I used my well-earned wifi/data to watch whether legally or illegally 💔.

I also miss those good old "Thank you for watching!" messages.

At least Oniichan wa Oshimai! did that last year.

It's better suited for a Hentai ending, with more interactive consequences.

Regular Anime is fine without it and should stay as a locked-in sandbox, making it a unique living universe.

To be fair, it better be thanking people, because watching Mushoku gets people jumped online

Bocchi on your example is a recent anime, but yeah I miss those thank yous, the eyecatchers between the 2 parts of an episode or the end card illustrations after every episode.

I miss these, it's was always a nice treat, especially if the ending was kind of a downer already.

My guess is they just assume the series will have a sequel so there's no reason to say goodbye. (IE: series tend to just be 13 episodes while back in the day they mostly went on forever and could choose when they ended)

Sometimes the Thank you is embedded in the story (kids these days call it "intradiegetic"). In the following example the last frame shows an actual letter sent to the protagonist, and at the same time you can see it as message for the viewer. I call that clever.

You're right that it does seem to be less common, but there are still a few which do so.

I like when anime does this, but isn't a hard requirement. Games do this I know! As for anime, not sure why it stopped. I miss them too, though.

Because of woke
On a serious note, I don't actually know, but it seems more common anime that have endcards.
Or maybe most anime still do that, but we don't see it anymore because nowadays we pirate from streaming rather than TV, same reason we don't see the "Kono bangumi wa goran no suponsaa no teikyou de okurishimasu" anymore.

The tradition of ending anime with a heartfelt “thank you” and “see you again someday” is now less common. The anime industry has evolved, and so have the practices around how series are concluded.
Modern anime are designed with the possibility of sequels, spin-offs, or additional seasons in mind. This open-ended approach make a definitive farewell seem premature.

The way people consume anime has changed. With the rise of streaming platforms, anime fans now often binge-watch series, making the traditional thank you and farewell less impactful.
Directors and writers choose to end their series in a way that aligns more closely with the tone and themes of the story, rather than older conventions.

I have always enjoyed the ending "thank you" message after each series ended. Even in manga, I always look forward to reading the mangaka's footnotes at the beginning of every volume.

Truly, this gratitude message is getting lesser nowadays.

The best thank you a good anime can give you is an announcement for a next season at the end of the current one, at least for those shows that have stories that require more seasons.

i enjoyed the super pretty / sexy illustrations at the end of an episode. thank you at the end is no for me chief. it puts on a sad mood, unless it's lie in your face type of anime i guess.
