This post contains a list of producers, studios and directors using stop-motion in a significant share of their works, provided their MAL entry has more than a couple of titles.

The thread could also be used to discuss, for example, different directors, if people want to recommend their favourite artists and styles.

Producers/studios:
These are mostly stop-motion:

Studios and producers that may usually create other types of animation, but also many stop-motion films:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/198/Gakken
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/471/Shanghai_Animation_Film_Studio
(these two not exclusively stop-motion, but they produced many such films at some point, ca. 50s-70s)

https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1524/Geidai_Animation | youtube
(Tokyo University of the Arts - most of their stuff isn't stop-motion, but the graduation works, many of which aren't on MAL, use puppets more often than average)

https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1804/Nice_Boat_Animation also have other kinds
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1717/Onionskin
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/3004/Taiyo_Kikaku
Producer rather than studio, for stop-motion work they use at least Tecarat. Currently MAL only has their stop-motion work, but they produce all kinds of things both animated and live-action.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1055/Yamamura_Animation_Inc
Yamamura also used different techniques, but he does have especially clay animation on our list.

Studios that only have 1-2 titles on our list:

Thanks! I'll add new findings to the opening post.

As a side note, currently the latest video on their youtube channel is LEGO stop-motion. I've come across maybe one or two brick films made by Japanese studios, but have found none in the database. I just remember one fake commercial, but apparently it was made digitally. It doesn't seem to be a common technique in Japan, and maybe it also doesn't qualify on the basis of character creation requirement (which is inconsistent anyway). They do have works that aren't currently on MAL, so we could try submitting some.

Should Taiyo Kikaku also be listed here?

They do have this entry:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/49099/Taiyo_Kikakus_49th_Anniversary_Movie

But it seems they are not yet listed as a company in the DB.
https://myanimelist.net/company?q=Taiyo+Kikaku

(Already in the DB. Thanks!)

They were involved in some stop-motion and other entries in the DB. Note: not everything in this list are stop-motion.
https://www.taiyokikaku.com/en/

It looks like they work closely with TECARAT as the titles above are on TECARAT's producer page: https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2178/Tecarat

P.S. I feel like I've seen some of the works in Kanjigram...
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0ktqkPR2ONAE-8fQ17PboToztUFziSHj&si=yR14XdLfbcYsRt61

P.P.S. I discovered plenty of interesting MVs and CMs thanks to the site.

I had a look at Taiyo Kikaku's website at some point, and it looks like they're a production company that may use different studios. Their main products are live-action commercials and music videos. The Tecarat website has the Taiyo Kikaku email address and copyright markings. So even if Tecarat was founded independently (not certain), they've now been acquired by Taiyo Kikaku. And for example on the TK page for one of the Metamon clips they take credit for animation which was done by Tecarat, so it's pretty likely that Tecarat is a part of the bigger company now:

https://www.taiyokikaku.com/works/other/metamon?en

I do think they ought to have a producer page on MAL. I wouldn't be surprised if everything done by Tecarat had Taiyo Kikaku as the producer.

This one on the list doesn't look like it's animated, but just puppetry done with the help of strings & sticks, so I think it wouldn't be accepted to the db:

https://www.taiyokikaku.com/works/other/gyoro?en

The same perhaps here, though I'm less certain since I'm not sure how they moved the buck:

I was updating my notes... I found this on the site:

TAIYO KIKAKU's 49th Anniversary Short Movie
https://www.taiyokikaku.com/newsentry/2910?en

“TECARAT,” a division of TAIYO KIKAKU

So that's why they appear together in most productions.

---

Alright. I don't think everything I gathered in the list above would be accepted, anyways.

Added https://myanimelist.net/people/10541/Kousuke_Sugimoto to the list of directors. He uses all kinds of styles besides stop-motion. Our spreadsheet currently has 5 works by him, but I've only seen a fraction of his music videos, so there might be more. Currently I try to watch at least 5 shorts or music videos each day (on weekends could be more), so it might take a while before I've checked out everything, but eventually I'll get there.

Just updated the Taiyo Kikaku list above with labels: Stop-motion (SM), 2D, CG, etc.
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?goto=post&topicid=2166900&id=71695245
Crossed off those that are in the DB. Also, included links to DB entries. Will try to submit some later on...

Thanks, I've removed the titles which are not stop-motion from our list of things to be submitted. Looks much more manageable now.

Cool! Looks more manageable indeed. And thanks for telling about the "opening video" part... There are times I use machine translation but forget to read them carefully. Already happened twice with stop-motion entries... LOL.

Some more studios for consideration:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2596/Comma_Studio
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1804/Nice_Boat_Animation (Fengyu Lang Qiao trilogy, Jiu Wo)
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1934/Saigo_no_Shudan
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1252/Studio_Binzo
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2774/Shadow_Steps
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/364/Sovat_Theater
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2647/Studio_A_Craft
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2907/Studio_Placebo (Fuwafuwa Hour, Eddie the Fast Break, Kore ga Masakano, Gingham Check no Kotori, ect.)
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2810/Studio_Yona
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2656/UchuPeople (Kazushige Toma is a stop-motion creator)
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/2564/Yamiken

Also, Taiyo Kikaku has been added to the DB now:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/3004/Taiyo_Kikaku
I think it is a similar situation to Whatever Co. - so if you don't want to include them in the list, this should probably also be removed (I didn't see much stop-motion when looking through the work on their page).

Thanks, I'll add those to the list except I'll look into Saigo no Shudan more carefully, since of their medium-length list of works only 2 are currently in our club relations.

I'll add Taiyo Kikaku and Nice Boat Animation in the section with Geidai Animation, Gakken and Shanghai Animation who use other techniques. That way the list can be used to browse studios which are predominantly stop-motion.

I checked the home pages of these additions, and at least Studio Placebo and Shadow Steps have titles that are not on their MAL pages, possibly not in the database, so I'll list those in the submissions thread to be checked out:
Studio Placebo: https://studio-placebo.jp/works_category/stopmotionanimation/
Shadow Steps: https://yuyustopmotion.wixsite.com/yuyu/films

I also had a look at the studios on the spreadsheet, and this one was also missing with 5 entries:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/375/IToon

Also adding as a special case https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/1055/Yamamura_Animation_Inc since Yamamura used different techniques, but he does have 7 entries on the list.

There are still a few studios there mentioned which only have 1 or 2 titles which are not on the list. Maybe I should create a separate section for them; there are some which only have 1 title on MAL, but also some that have produced mostly other kinds of stuff. I'm thinking it's possible they have more stop-motion to be discovered that hasn't been submitted here, so it might be worth listing them somewhere in case we want to keep an eye on them. Added:
https://myanimelist.net/people/77531/Katsuo_Takahashi

He has only two titles on MAL, but he was a stop-motion pioneer at least from the 60s onwards, and founded the company Tokyo Central Production. His daughter frequently posts on the Facebook page dedicated to the studio:

https://www.facebook.com/TokyoCentralProduction

https://myanimelist.net/people/78619/Shigeru_Okada

has been added to the db, so I'm adding him to our list. So far there are no works listed, but he's worked as an animator on some recent dwarf projects (Rilakkuma) and has a long history of creating independent stop-motion animation. More details in the submissions thread.

I also added little comments to the directors list so that we can see at a glance at least the period when they were active and maybe the genres they worked in.
