I've made a lot of changes to the list in the last week, adding more than 80 titles, so I decided to write a sticky about helpful resources. First, I've updated the spreadsheet. It now includes the year the anime aired and most importantly the style of animation used. Styles include puppet, sand, clay, object, yarn, rope, paint, charcoal, cutout, silhouette and still motion. So now you can sort by year to check what styles were popular in the past, or you can sort by style. In a few cases I wasn't able to determine the style, so those are blank. edit: the spreadsheet now also includes the director, studio, genre and country of origin Secondly, I've created 2 interest stacks for cutout animation, another one for silhouettes or shadow puppets, and 12 stacks to include all of our relations list. From now on as new titles are added, I'll try to add them to the last stack, so that should make it easier to see what's new. Here are the interest stacks from our members: @Kwanthemaster regarding claymation there might be some anime on the spreadsheet that isn't in your stacks, other types should be up to date. Collage (not always stop-motion, but cutouts are common): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/21389 Paint-on-glass: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/29701 Sand: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/21313 Clay Animation: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/30395 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/30399 @IridescentJaune Pokémon: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/41579 Cute: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/11786 By the studios dwarf, Gakken Eigakyoku, Decarat: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51331 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51292 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51576 @Cleome Korean: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/20939 Chinese: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/20640 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/20643 @ooReiko selections: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/2764 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/9052 Poitle selections: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/3095 @Feorg Avant Garde: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51624 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51626 Commercials: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51621 Cutout: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/46772 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47003 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/54180 Fairy Tales: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51627 Horror: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51628 Silhouette: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47002 Music videos: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/43979 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/43980 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51619 Everything: Part 1: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47018 Part 2: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47020 Part 3: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47021 Part 4: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47022 Part 5: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47023 Part 6: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47026 Part 7: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47027 Part 8: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47032 Part 9: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47034 Part 10: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47035 Part 11: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47036 Part 12: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/47038 Part 13: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/49186 Part 14: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51880 A list of long-running anime that hasn't finished airing: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35695/Keito_no_Yousei__Knit_to_Wool 10/???: https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_214 https://myanimelist.net/anime/35696/Konigiri-kun 11/???: https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_211 https://myanimelist.net/anime/29427/Mori_no_Ratio 16/???: https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_221 https://myanimelist.net/anime/35698/Oidon_to 10/???: https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_206 https://myanimelist.net/anime/62373/Project_Kabigon 12/???: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2230347 https://myanimelist.net/anime/58261/Puppu_to_Pappa 3/???: https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_189 https://myanimelist.net/anime/35701/Shammy_to_Kage_Boy 6/???: https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_36 https://myanimelist.net/anime/52066/Recola 4/??? https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_185 https://myanimelist.net/anime/37343/Working_Boys 7/???: https://vk.com/video/playlist/-215715880_186 Recent changes to the list include: Added a lot of cutout animation. Most anime before 1935 had some cutout animation, because cels were expensive, but it's often difficult to recognize. Even people who study history of animation for living have some trouble with it. I've tried to look at old clips, and if there are clear separate moving parts used dominantly, I've considered it stop-motion, at least if it's from the early days. With cutout another problem comes with computer animation. Nowadays it can create a style that looks like puppets, but with cutout animation the change happened decades ago. Therefore with recent anime that looks like cutout it's really difficult to tell whether it's real. I've gone through the works of these animators for cutout and puppet animation: https://myanimelist.net/people/36897/Noburou_Oofuji https://myanimelist.net/people/23499/Yasuji_Murata https://myanimelist.net/people/36831/Tadahito_Mochinaga When it comes to older anime, I'm sure there's still a lot of stuff missing, especially from China. I've added some paint-on-glass and sand animations from kwanthemaster's interest stacks. We already had some, but to make it more consistent, we should have now all independent works. Sometimes these types aren't considered animation, but as I understand it, they're shot frame by frame and moving things gradually. There's also sand and paint animation that's done live, but when they are in the database, I believe they qualify as stop-motion. I removed these titles from the list, the first one for most likely being puppet animation with computer-assisted animation. The rest just didn't look like stop motion. https://myanimelist.net/anime/31941/Alice_in_Dreamland https://myanimelist.net/anime/5785/G-9 https://myanimelist.net/anime/2891/Iblard_Jikan https://myanimelist.net/anime/2767/Taneyamagahara_no_Yoru https://myanimelist.net/anime/5819/Tori_no_Uta https://myanimelist.net/anime/22219/Warera_Salaryman_Tou (There is another Salaryman anime from 1970 that is stop-motion, but this last one isn't, I believe.) I've reconsidered works by Takashi Itou and Maya Yonesho. Itou has works I've labelled still motion, and often don't look like animation at all, but web sources indicate that he does use stop motion. Yonesho has animation that's been made with taking pictures of drawings and paintings. Her works are in a way in the borderland between stop-motion and traditional animation. I've decided to keep them both on our list. |

Kagee Aesop isnt available online to stream last time checked but they sell the DVD on Amazon, about Mukashibanashi idk. Also about the spreadsheet will you be adding stuff (that i think should be on MAL) that arent on MAL that were deleted in the last batch like the Licca-chan stop motion, Nami and the Oofuji Noburo Prize winner Isu Other thing are the stuff that are not Japanese productions to begin with like Coral and Usagi no Mofy |

If it's stop-motion, then I'll trust what's accepted into the database, because the aim is to keep the spreadsheet the same as our club relations, with clickable links and the possibility to add stuff onto our own lists. I do regret that, for example, pixilation anime like Nami was removed. Hoping it'll return some day. It doesn't really matter where the animation was produced, as long as it's in the database so it can be in our relations. We do have some Korean stop-motion and especially Chinese productions from the 60s-90s. |

So the list acts more as a helper for the club relations rather than a complete catalog on what is on the database and what isnt? And when I mentioned non Japanese productions I meant European stuff that technically istn allowed on MAL but there is still some of them here. I think Mofy was deleted while ago though |

That's right, it's more like an extension of the club. The main reason for the spreadsheet's existence is that it's hard to navigate the club relations and look for sources. I'm afraid I wouldn't have the time or the language skills to catalog things that aren't on the site and judge whether they qualify. In the past members of the club have submitted stop-motion anime for approval, and I've submitted a couple recently myself, and that way we've got some new stuff on the list. However, nothing prevents us from discussing possible entries to be submitted in the club or recommending them to each other, and if we get them accepted, I'll add them to the relations and the spreadsheet. |

The thing that I have issue with is the MAL rule that stop motion isnt allowed if it uses stock objects as main actors even if it is real stop motion and even if the backgrounds were handcrafted for the series. So I wont submitting anything to the site anymore until that rule is reversed. |

Yeah it is unfortunate. We have a some entries still on the list which use stock objects. For example, there's animation done with food items, things that are pretty artistic. And where do you even draw the line? If eyes are drawn onto the object, is it then okay? I think they want "character creation" but what exactly that entails is hard to define. Here's an anime that isn't in the database, I don't know why, but I wonder if it's because of that rule or because it's just too obscure, nevertheless it's pretty cute: |

Yeah its why I thought it would be good to add stuff like that to the spreadsheet too or atleast somewhere so if the rule gets reversed they wont be forgotten and even if it wont get reversed it would still be good to have some kind of catalogue |

I've added another Complete Collection stack to the opening post and also a list of anime that's still airing. Some stop-motion shorts on NHK remain unfinished for years, even a decade. They all seem to fit a 5-minute time slot and there's no information on when they might be finished. Personally I've put them on my on-hold list, but I'll update the opening post if new information arrives. |

The spreadsheet has been updated to include the director, studio (sometimes producer), genre and country of origin. Details at the end of this post. New stacks (also added to the opening post): By IridescentJaune stacks for the studios dwarf, Gakken Eigakyoku, Decarat: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51331 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51292 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51576 I've created the following genre stacks: Avant Garde: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51624 https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51626 Commercials: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51621 Fairy Tales: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51627 Horror: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51628 Music Videos 3: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/51619 *** Fables stack is also possible, but it's quite difficult with the genre designations, and also currently most of our fables are obscure Chinese animation which doesn't have subs. So I'll have to do some research first. The problem with genres is that MAL isn't that accurate. For example, the fantasy tag may include isekai, fairy tales, folk tales, whatever's made for children with talking bears etc. So in the spreadsheet as I was checking the entries I started making designations I deemed more accurate. Basically links are to MAL pages, but if there's no link for directors or studios, I found the information elsewhere, and with genres it's my assessment based on seeing the clip or sometimes synopsis. Often it's also difficult to say what is a folk tale, what is pure fantasy, what is specifically a fairy tale or a fable with a moral. Also, unlike on MAL, the genre column uses the following categories since I thought it would be more useful: Historical, CM, Fable, Fairy Tale, Folk Tale. Mythology and Fantasy genres might still include entries that can be more accurately described with these designations. Regarding studios, I've sometimes used the producer instead, if a studio wasn't found, but only in cases where I suspected that the producer might also be the studio, or in general if the producer is a small one. And there are also a couple of music producers as well. But, for example, I didn't see the point of mentioning NHK since they put out all kinds of stuff sourced from who knows where. Here are some producers that appear in place of the studio: N&G Production Space Neko Company The Village of Marchen Geidai Animation Higa Brothers Production |

I wish I thought of the Stop Motion Fairy Tales stack since I already have various fairy tale-related stacks. LOL. Anyhow, I have these threads in my Interest Stacks Repository club which might aid with your research: For fairy tales and folklores, you can use the ATU index and the KHM numbers for Grimms' Fairy Tales. Here's a list for Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales. For fables or Aesopica, you can use the Perry index. I've added some resources in the threads too. Yeah, it's harder with fables compared to fairy tales and folklores as Sanrio and Hello Kitty got those covered. Haha. Here are some relevant clubs: Folklore: Mythology, Fairy Tales and Legends For The Love Of Sanrio♥ I wanted to sift out the stop motion animations produced by Gakken at first and ended up with some studio/producer stacks... Oh, I've also made this Stop Motion Animation thread for the Interest Stacks Repository club's indexing purposes... |

Thanks for the resource @IridescentJaune! I also got the idea for more accurate genre descriptions once I was halfway through the list and realized how MAL just has dumped all kinds of different things under fantasy. So there are still lots of inaccuracies, but dealing with such a long list is time-consuming since the information needs to be manually checked. Even if MAL doesn't mention something being a fable I can recognize the plot of the well-known western fables. The main issue is with the Asian fables for which I haven't found any catalogue. After having watched most of our list I can recognize some movies as being fables, but the line is not always clear. As a side note, it's also interesting that Japan used cutout animation until the mid-30s because cells were so expensive, and during that time there were a lot of short with monkeys doing stuff. Then later in the 50s and 60s Chinese animation became fascinated with cutouts (and puppets), and there we see also quite a few monkey stories. And foxes. Often the monkeys are vaguely anthropomorphic, for example using fishing poles, but not as much as in western fables, and there might not be a moral or it's very vague. So some of those entries might be fables, but certainly not all of them. And there's also considerable overlap with folktales. |

Wow that's a huge list that will be helpful. In the past I've submitted a few titles I found on the dwarf website, but I didn't realize there were so many left. But I've also been hesitant to submit CMs which don't have a video source, since it takes some time to fill out the form and it's not transparent what the criteria for inclusion are. Some very short clips have been accepted, but the guideline says: "Animated commercials produced for the Japanese market will be allowed only if they are of decent length and have substantial plot. Specifics to be decided at a later date." It's such a vague rule that I've simply avoided submitting CMs for the fear of having looked for information in vain. Hopefully we can get these things accepted. |
