After three years, I have started rewatching JoJo from the beginning, and that means I saw "Dio the Invader" for the first time in three years. It's definitely an iconic episode, including such classic scenes as Erina's first kiss and Danny's death. At the same time, though, it's a bit of a strange first episode that may not really "hook" someone on JoJo if they know nothing about the series. Think of it like this: I'm a big Beach Boys fan, but if I tell someone to listen to The Beach Boys and they start with Surfin' Safari, they won't exactly be getting into the most impressive material of the band's catalog. I can imagine many instances of people dropping JoJo altogether after just this episode. What did you think of it the first time around?

I thought it was weird (or bizarre if you will) and a bit too fast for my taste.

Don't think the first episode itself was something that would have made me go away. It felt like a peculiar mix of avante garde and a simple allegory taking itself too seriously. Also the concept of a perfectly hateable villain becoming a focus of the very first episode catches one's attention.

I thought it was great for the true evilness of DIO. I also liked how Jonathan was created as a true 17 years old gentleman, like a character from Goethe. Part 1 may be weaker than others, but the start is iconic :)

Instantly got hooked and reeled in, wish we saw more of the conflict between young Dio and Jonathan

Much too fast after rewatching, saved by Dio and the ending. Part two is a MUCH better paced show. It could’ve used 4 more episodes with less exposition and more moments with Zeppeli and Speedwagon to create more stakes.

Part 1 as a whole is too overhated imo. I do admit it is better appreciated on a rewatch rather than the first time round, however it is indeed iconic and sets the tone for the rest of the franchise incredibly well.

Thing is, for new viewers Part 1 is actually too slow-paced. That's actually the main reason why a lot of people drop the series so early.

It was very long ago so kind of hard to remember, but I think I thought it was pretty awkward and even cliche (definitely didn’t get jojo at the time), I didn’t really like it and I actually dropped the show after 3 or 4 episodes.

Luckily, I picked it back up some time later and watched it with a friend and appreciated part 1 better and absolutely adored the rest of the series.

Felt old school and I loved it. Also never seen an anime with that manly muscle bounded characters and that so got hooked and enjoyed it.

kinda bizarre ngl seeing a non-edgy shounen protagonist was new for me, legendary OP
i eventually had to shed a tear when jonathan died. Overall a great start to a masterpiece of a series

Something felt “bizzare”. Jonathan Joestar lived a rich life and everything was fine until Dio appeared. Although, I liked how David Animation presented the way Jonathan lived and how was he in relation to other characters.

Was watching a streamer react to the first episode back in 2016 (I think), it was the scene when Dio jumps out of the wagon, and it pretty much instantaneously became my favorite piece of fiction, everything just fit perfectly to my tastes, I quickly started watching the show and just kept loving it more and more, it is still my favorite piece of fiction!!!

I'm gonna be honest here. I'm not a huge fan of Jojo. In fact, after watching all available seasons, I don't even know why Jojo has become such a mainstream anime. When I watched the first episode, everything felt extremely boring and cliché: the main character acting as a true gentleman, the despisable villain motivated only by greed and power, etc. My first impression was that the anime had come out of a romance book written in 1800's and lacked any kind of personality.

I started watching Jojo 10 days ago... When I watched the first ep, I was like, "The art style is WEIRD. IM GONNA DROP IT... Like, no way this is gonna be a boring cliche anime." But I'm watching part 3 (Unbreakable Diamond) rn😐🤣

Plot was very fast I might be unpopular for this but it’s true that I really enjoyed it, and after that the part 2 that happened right in the same season it was way better than part 1 so yeah 👍

I ve known JoJo from OVAs of Part 3, 13 episodes summary (voice acted incredibly good in my language, italian), I liked it enough, many animations are even better than animated than in anime.
Time later I discovered there were other series, I watched PB and 1st episode I was so surprised to see Dio like that, and his early-evil behaviour towards Jonathan surprised me.
I mostly liked first part less than other parts (excluding JoJolion, that s the one I like the least) but one thing that makes me like the season a lot is Jonathan s behaviour because of his big-heart feelings, and that's similiar to the point of view I always had in my life, and the part of becoming more mature while growing too. Erina is another reason I liked it, her resolution against a pure evil person hit me hard, same for the unconditional love that Jonathan feels for Dio, being so much comprehensive with him to the very end, even if Dio was not accepting it. The characters' introspective content is a lot deep, as when Jonathan fought Bruford, trying to understand the next one in many situations, that's what I'm made of too so I truly felt those things.

I thought it was hilarious and bizarre af. I just remember being shocked about Danny and laughing a lot at the absurd and dramatic shit that was happening. Instantly fell in love and wanted to keep watching. I miss those days. They were simpler times. I hate how so many people just skip over part 1 and 2. Phantom Blood is so underappreciated imo. It sets everything up for the rest of the series, and come on! How can you skip the meme content??

I don’t remember. I think I was mostly just watching without thinking that much. But i started watching Jojo because of Part 5, and I thought Giorno and Dio was the same person so I was probably curious as to how that happens (I also knew of his return in part 3).

I dismissed things because I thought I knew what would happen, but that mindset went away bit by bit into part 2 and disappeared at part 3
