Man, this in particular angel and the accompanying fight scene is kind of disturbing.
Akira vibes.
Yes, an overall unsettling episode.
Kinda hard to see Rei dying and most of the city being destroyed.

Regarding a scene I hadn't entirely understood:
^
I draw those conclusions because Misato says "He must be lonely. Is he afraid of women? No, he's afraid of being intimate with people." ... I personally feel like the word "intimate" here has a non-sexual connotation, and is supposed to imply that Shinji is lonely but partly because of his insecure nature. He's afraid to get close.

-

A lot of things happened in this episode, so I don't mean to hone in on THESE kind of things... but I can't believe they made it a point to "humiliate" Ritsuko. Seemed somewhat uncharacteristic of the series, and yet I sort of approve it. I wonder why she was required to be unclothed though. For the SEELE's viewing pleasure -- or for disciplinary purposes?
(I don't like the way the wiki says "SEELE puts Ritsuko through TORTURE and shame" though. That seems a bit extreme, especially since Ritsuko seemed unfazed.)
==========

M'kay, trivial things aside, this wasn't an awful episoe by any means. It was STRIDES better than the previous two, and was actually easier to follow.

NGE's biggest strength was mixing the mecha vibe with psychological struggles; when it placed too much eggs in either basket, that's when interest could faulter. In becoming solely psychologically, the series has also been prone to becoming too symbolic and abstract. But this episode kind of broke free from that.

The ending was especially interesting. Really interesting, actually. Misato and Ritsuko's strengths as characters came forth. And the entire Rei-related reveal was extremely interesting.

Although... I'm sure we all assumed at this point that Rei was somewhat artificial and capable of being cloned.

It's an alright episode. I liked the reveal of Rei being cloned multiple times. It's likely that Gendo sees her as simply a tool. But what is she made of? I think She's a clone of Yui, Shinji's mom. (Which is actually pretty gross for me cos I've been shipping them.)

So, is Rei an Eva?

And also, god fucking damn that was a mind fuck, hopefully things get cleared up in the remaining 3 episodes. I still have many questions. Hopefully they get awnsered.

First Shinji, then Asuka, now Rei's episode.

So the first Rei got killed by being strangled, and the second got killed by that explosion. So now we meet the third Rei. All her clones are now gone, so she's the final one.

Ritsuko became so unhinged at the end. When you go back and watch the earlier episodes all the scenes where she interacts with Gendo is strange to watch now. Because now you know they’re dating.

Clones of Rei, many many clones of Rei. Holy cow.
Which SOMEHOW has to do with Yui's merge within unit 01 that's why Gendou sends out unit 01, he knows it will somehow intuitively be protective of Rei. Though, Rei is also protective of Shinji who is part of unit 01. Hence her second suicide mission. Also, her sense of self is barely existent.
Rei is Yui and Gendou's daughter somehow, but cloned over and over again. Ritsuko's mother is somehow involved, too.

The angel itself represented Rei's loneliness and desire to connect with others, but she just internalized it all to protect others.

Poor Rei, holy crap. Since Ritsuko destroyed them, there's only one Rei left.

Also, Rei II just sploded Tokyo-3.

WOAH Misato hitting on Shinji? Wow shows how desperate she is for intimacy. She is for sure an interesting character.

Oh that's why the ep was named Rei III. She died and got replaced with another clone. Apparently she is the core of the Dummy plug thing.

Oh boy, everybody is depressed after the past couple of events. Asuka and Misato especially.

Well Rei made it out alive

Why tf was Akagi sent to a SEELE meeting naked? Wtf was going on there?

Holy shit Rei clones are the core part of those super-effective Dummy Plugs?

Things are moving quite fast now.

Wowowow that was a lot..
So we know Rei is a clone -- 1st Rei was the kid version that Ritsuko's mom killed, 2nd Rei was the one we've been seeing for the majority of the season, and 3rd Rei is the newest one we see now, got it.
It doesn't seem like the Rei clones directly inherit memories from their previous versions, but this Rei did seem to have faint impressions of the life and feelings of the 2nd Rei so we might see some more development with that later.

Asuka being angry and depressed as per usual, gotcha.

We got to see more detective Misato uncovering Nerv secrets via the help of good ol' Kaji's spy-data (rest in peace)
Speaking of Misato, I swear she was so close to slapping Ritsuko again after she insinuated that there wouldn't be any remains left of Rei's body. Misato wasn't as involved in Rei's life as opposed to Shinji and Asuka, but it's clear that she cares for all of the kids put under her command which is nice considering we've seen most other Nerv personnel view the pilots as completely and entirely disposable.

ALSO, apparently the Eva's are literally just humans created using the Adam DNA? So does that mean Adam is human..? Adam is the 'giant of light' god-thingy they saw way back when in Antarctica so is God human? Is everything just human?

the end was't that surprising lol. really. the moment that "other" rei told "our" rei that they are multiple, i realised that rei isn't human birth.
it quite suspected from earlier episodes with shinji and her scene, she didn't blushed there. but with shinji's scene telling her she's like mother she had emotions. and also previous episode when she said that even dulls have "souls". it's all comes to this episode.
never the less, the anime doesn't stopping at giving questions alongside answeres.

seems SEELE have fulfilled somehow their "destiny".

Perhaps it'll be explained somewhere in what seems to be a mindf*ckery of a last 3 episodes.

Now we know why Rei always feels like she's disposable. She's not even the original Rei. But I think that sets her apart from the rest of the cast in a really significant way. She doesn't have any emotional baggage or dark twisted past that's haunting her. Rather she has exactly the opposite problem. She has nothing. Only Nerv and the Ikaris. Let's get some Fs in the chat for rei II.

Also wtf were you thinking Ritsuko? Just look at what happened to your Mom. Talk about surprised Pikachu face.

"People possessed by EVAs", Katsuragi says, but the common variable I see is Ikari Gendou. Not everywhere, but he's the root of many psychological issues.

Also, I'm not sure what's the meaning of "having a soul" or not. Rei III is crying. Rei II sacrificed herself for Shinji multiple times.

Asuka's interaction with Hikari is something I've completely forgotten and I never knew I needed that until now, especially during the Rebuilds.

The Rei copies that Akagi said hhave no souls. So was Rei actually a more human-sized angel and these are all soul-less bodies thhat she destroyed, or is it actually straight up cloning as we know and the 'soul-less' part is just that moral question regarding mass cloning. Similar issue with sisters in Index/Railgun (wonder if it was inspired by this a it?).
So it's now a question as to which Rei have we been seeing all this time. Have we being seeing the same one, or multiple ones? In the hospital she said she must be the third...but what does that mean? She was injured, or was that just a ruse for the others to make the newly deployed clone look like she 'survived'? Guessing this is why Gendou wasn't worried when Rei decided to self-destruct the EVA, since her soull was copied to the dummy system. But at the same time why was he worried during her suicide nuke run which took place AFTER the dummy plugs were created...and why does he show no remorse over having those cloned bodies just for auto-pilots and/or for 'spare parts'.

Even Akagi?! Seriously?! 3 people have fallen for that disgusting man Gendou now, 2 of which somehow still liked him AFTER he cracked. And daughter going after the man her mother liked is even more unhinged.

Really don't understand Seele. They do fuck all and worry aout Gendou doing his own thing, yet he's the only one who's managed to destroy the angels. They boast about having the remaining EVAs mass produced, but so far all the units past 02 have been utter failures and they haven't even got trained pillots for them :/ Also, they are clearly a group of creepy perverts :S

I can't believe Misato was questioning why Shinji didn't want to smash after Kaji and now Rei just fucking died. The plot is completely bonkers at this point, though. Rei being a clone and the Evas having souls was pretty obvious. Everything with Adam and shit is just absurd though. Luckily that sort of stuff isn't super important to the characters aside from Gendo

Every character in NGE represents a flaw. Rei's one is a lack of sense of self and self-importance. Fighting against angels is what brings Rei purpose, she is defined by this purpose. Until this episode, Rei has been simply serving it and if she wasn't able to do it, she was replaced with one of her clones. After their destruction, this has become Rei's last version, so if she dies, there will be no replacements - just like being a living human being, having a soul. This teaches us two things: 1) everyone's efforts and experiences are valid; 2) if you're going to die, better die for something you believe in. Rei never dies “in vain”, or because she's “easily replaced”, it's always to fight against angels, and this time she's lived to see the fruits of her efforts. Ritsuko's destroying the clones is an act against the undervaluing of Rei's life.

Brilliant episode, it answers a lot of queestions like what truly are Evas.
we finally understand the truth behind Rei, she is clearly a clone of Yui Ikari created by Fuyutsuki and Gendo, and her soul is transferred from clone to clone.
Rei I was killed by dr. Akagi, Rei II died this episode and now Rei III is born, seemingly with some memories from re II but not everything, in fact she cries, she shows resentment towards Gendo (his glasses) and sympathy for shinji.
Misato is trying to overcome kaji's death but she feels deeply lonely, she tries to confort and be conforted by shinji, shinji is in a similiar situation but he is now scared again of human intimacy, just like asuka. (hedgehog dilemma)
We also discover that Ritsuko is in love with gendo and has sex with him, probably this behaviour is rooted in the relationship she had with her mother, trying to follow her shadow but surpassing her.
it's sadly ironic that both ritsuko and his mother had a similiar fate, they ''lost'' against Rei, and ended up killing her.
i feel very bad for asuka.

So much information, Rei is an Eva an artificial human made of an artificial god. Rei died she's gone the Rei that we knew is gone forever and hundreds of soulless clones died too. What happened to Rei II when the Angel messed with her? And Asuka? And Misato what did she find out? And Shinji's mom?

Ikari, are you going to betray Seele?

However, although the fundamental question has been asked and appears in the series, it should have appeared much earlier and not merely before all the action returns to take on the new threat.

It makes all the politics that exist in the background lose their relevance. I would have liked to see Ikari have to defend himself against Seele or whoever is in charge of the organization. And not poor excuses, like, well, now there is a new threat, we'll talk about it later.
When we talk later everything will surely have changed.

And yet there it is! Right after the destruction of the Angel, we see the interrogation, but not of Ikari!! But from the person that Ikari has sent.
Very interesting, the doctor wanted the protagonist to see the secrets, and Katsuragi is there because of her ex-boyfriend. All the pieces fit. The boyfriend's character couldn't be spoiled with his death, there had to be something more. What a nice twist.

And I am sure that that 400% affinity with the Angel of your son has not yet been lost.

Another question is: To what extent Rei has had to sacrifice her outside life, her everyday life, in order to assert herself in front of the Angel.
Because otherwise it is not understood that a person who knows that she is she, who proclaims the maxim of individual freedom, then is inclined to the crudest manipulation and allows herself to be done, precisely against her individual freedom (even if "there is consent") , or maybe because Rei thinks, well, the important thing is that when I'm inside the Angel, I'm still me.
The internal struggle when one is inside the Angel, if it exists, can explain certain things.

The direction of the last scene is magnificent.
We are shown a doctor in her worst moments in the series, from Katsuragi's point of view,

The tragedy of those obsessed with Evas... (camera towards the doctor)

Am I different?

Well I saw the episode, it had a great fight with the Angel killing Rei, got some answers to her in general. But I’m still bloody confused. Apparently she was a clone this whole time and she was bred from Shinji’s mum’s DNA I guess? And there are many clones of Rei down in an observatory at the bottom of the base that are what power the dummy plug. Kay fine but I don’t understand why Ritsuko has to be naked for her own interrogation. And all the clones of Rei that were in that observatory or whatever it is? Creepy as fuck right there. Just those soulless eyes just staring, staring at me right through that TV screen I was watching this episode on and because Ritsuko destroyed the dummy plug and also killing the clones as a result that means the Rei we saw in her room crying is the last and sole remaining clone left now.

There’s just…so much to process and yet I don’t know if I can even express what just happened when this episode and Evangelion in general has just become mindfuck central for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the show and what it’s given me up to this point but jeez I have never felt so lost with confusion in all my life. It is that crazy. And I’m still sitting here with no clue on what’s going on in general. It’s like I’m trying to solve one of The Riddler’s riddles here. It’s a great episode but good god this is very confusing. Just 3 more episodes to go, 3 more and we will have completed Evangelion in it’s entirety.

- Whoa, did it try to revive the other angels out of unit 00?? Or is it just imagery
- Dang why did it have to be Rei, she’s my favourite
