I'm using an old computer that still plays CD and DVD discs. I use DVD discs to install Linux on my laptop. My laptop was manufactured and purchased in late 2012 btw. That was over 13 years ago, and it is still working very fine.

discs became useless to me in like 2010, everything happens on hard drives and flash memory now, the only time I've used them in this long was 7 years ago to re-run my old trigun bootlegs (boring show tbh, not watching the remake or whatever it is)

@foxes_are_neet I will be honest, the only reason I use my disc drive is for installing Linux distro(s) on my laptop. No other reason tbh.

@DesuMaiden
you could just make a bootable thumbdrive with startup disk creator or whatever program you have, installation would go a lot faster

I still have a DVD drive on my laptop although I'll be replacing it soon (it has an old AMD APU and 4 gigs of ram so it's pretty slow even with a lightweight linux distro).
My desktop hasn't had a DVD drive since 2014. I have some physical PC games but it's not a problem. The newer ones required Steam for activation so I won't need to insert the disk again and there are cracked versions of the older ones around. I used to borrow a friend's external drive to play these but they're so old getting a cracked version is more convenient now.

Lately I've been thinking about getting a blu-ray burner to back stuff up.

From time to time yes, I still have a CD player in my car so oftentimes I will burn music onto it. Even though it's kind of on its way out. 😭

Yes, I have a CD/DVD reader/writer on my PC, tho it sadly commit sepuku a couple of weeks ago and now it cant write but it can read.

I plan to get a Bluray device to replace it, and even move my game collection to GoG so I can get the installer and burn them into optical media. Yeah I could just put them on external HDD and the like, but those devices always end up formatted one way or the other (I curse you Windows and you fucking "fix" for ExFat drives).

That and also having some boxes is really cool! And since PC devs dont make physical games anymore...

I use an optical disk drive for ripping CDs, playing games with SecuROM, watching DVDs, etc.

I have a Blu-ray drive on my computer but I never use it. It was only around a $20 component in the first place, so whatever.

I actually have taken it out and temporarily used it in other older computers in my house when I need to install old media from a drive or something, like Windows 7 lol.

@foxes_are_neet I think it is easier to install Linux distro(s) from a DVD disc than from a thumb drive.

how? the GUi and stuff is the same, the only difference is you press F10 or whatever at boot and select the thumbdrive

that and you're spared a DVD which you can burn your yaoi onto instead

@foxes_are_neet I haven't figured out how to install Linux from a USB stick yet. I prefer using a DVD disc for the installation of an OS instead.

My main computer and laptop don't have optical drives, but I've been wanting to get an external 4K Bluray player to use with them so I can watch stuff on physical discs again. I have older systems that do have DVD / CD drives, but I don't usually use optical storage anymore unless it's for console gaming in some cases.

@Retro8bit Does your car stereo have an AUX IN as well that you could use with an MP3 player when the CD reader stops working, or have you considered a Bluetooth-to-FM transmitter so you can play music off of a smartphone?

Yes, I'm one of few people who still does. I also still use SATA HDD hard drives and a dedicated sound card. My motherboard is 10 years old, it doesn't support NVME, and I still use BIOS rather than UEFI.

No, my laptop doesn't seem able to do that out of the box, and I don't do tinkering. Have always had and still do own many other devices to play them on, the laptop has never been an option for me.

Oh man I wish, but unfortunately it doesn't have AUX IN. It's a 2001 Nissan Xterra so I'm not sure if the cars were not known for having them back then. Haven't looked into Bluetooth transmitter. Would that be possible on a car as old as mine where the radio doesn't have any other plugins?

@Retro8bit Oh yeah, that might have been just before some manufacturers were including AUX IN since CDs were still quite the norm until the mid 00s or so. Yeah, the device I mentioned should work as long as you have a cigarette lighter, which it plugs into. Once it has power you connect to it with your smartphone via Bluetooth and play whatever you want on the phone. The device broadcasts an FM signal that your car antenna picks up and plays just like a normal radio station.

Just be mindful that you might have to find a weak FM station to tune the device and your radio to so it isn't overpowered by strong signals in your area, plus if anyone is close to your vehicle and tuned into that channel as well they may also pick up the signal from the transmitter and be able to listen in, since it acts like a miniature broadcast tower. The one I have also has AUX IN and a microSD card slot for MP3s as well if you'd rather not use Bluetooth.

Also I swear this isn't an ad because it probably sounds that way. lol

If you have any questions feel free to reach out and I'll try to help.

Holy smokes I had no idea this was even a thing! Never bothered looking into it because since all my vehicle had was a cigarette lighter with no additional plugins, I figured their wasn't any other alternatives. The way you describe how it works though makes sense for today's technology. Thank you so much man, I'm definitely going to look into this. My car currently has a 6 tray CD player, and will sometimes stop spinning due to all the years of use. For that reason is why I have mostly burned CDs in there, so I don't risk getting any of my official stuff jammed or lodged in the player. This is definitely going to open up a whole new world of possibilities for me. Appreciate it brother, you're the best! 💪

By the way, are there any brands you recommend over others? 😯
