Isao got lots of broadcast time as he deserved here.
I wonder what he meant by "One last attack" or sth like this in his last words.
From this episode on all's new to me, dont have manga after this point xp

@holdingnothing All kaijuu have a core, even in human form, I imagine. Assumedly, if they developed some full body scan which (should?) show the core before allowing entry to important places, it would prevent any future kaijuu from continuing to exploit that problem.
@Zudoba Fair point, much easier than the ghoul situation, because that's based on analyzing blood composition and chemistry...electronically, somehow

Yep, the typical shounen trope where the old head from the previous generation has to give it his all one last time, basically sacrificing himself to raise the stakes... which, for this show, will actually work because up until now there have been quite literally none. Plus, well, I mean, Isao is like the only good character in this show, plus he’s just cool to watch fight in general xD

Though, knowing this show, I’d expect something more like him becoming incapacitated and unable to carry on his duties, because him dying at this point wouldn’t really make sense for anyone’s development. But at the same time, like I said, stakes are needed, so it really does feel like this is it for Commander. Fighting with #9 definitely proved to be a fatal mistake.
@IzanaSolos reminded me of All Might vs Nomu and also All Might vs All For One.

No. 9 was very weak when he first fought with Kafka. But it is increasing at an enormous rate.

I have to say this episode probably moved me more than any other episode in season two so far. Especially when the director looked back on his life when his wife was still alive and his daughter was a little child. He wants to live up to the memory of his wife who is no longer able to stand beside him, and fight the very end to make the world safer for his daughter who he trusts among the next generation of fighters to carry the torch.
His determination to do this right to the very end here is probably what makes this episode one of my favourites so far. I just wish it didn’t mean his end like that.

Another pretty good episode, with great animation to boot. RIP the old guy, he fought well, but that Kaiju keeps evolving, how do you even deal with that thing at this point?

The last episode was my favorite one, but this episode may be my new favorite one now.

5/5 episode this one was.

Well that escalated quickly. After 3 somewhat slow episodes, we get an episode that flew way too damn fast.

Not to sound like a prick but no.8 got literal jets in his feet which enable him to go faster? yet he decided to take the scenic route running? Nonetheless sick ep ofc not a negative notion just that was my thought :)

With No. 8's jets, we've only seen him using it in short bursts, it's possible he can't sustain it for any length of time. He was still running really quickly. That's not to say him not using them with no explanation isn't odd.

The same old "old guy sacrificing himself to pass on the torch to next gen". It doesn't work here because we don't actually have emotional connection with anyone. He could have stalled the fight but nope "i will take you down right now, even if i have to sacrifice my life" needed to be done.

The sound and animation was janky in this episode.

For all its epicness, it was also incredibly frustrating to fight. I felt like the scientist who was helping Isao, waiting for the slightest chance of victory, only to end up crushed when things played out exactly as expected.

Isao went all the way. He gave his life for his country, for his people, for the future of the new recruits, for the next generation. And above all, although he never really acted like a father, he gave his all for his daughter. That final act, where he sacrificed himself for Kikoru, tore me apart. At that moment, he realized that he probably should have hugged his daughter more often, so he could say goodbye in a gentler way. But he didn't. And that really tears me apart. And to make it even worse, Kaiju No. 9 had the nerve to show Kikoru how he killed and absorbed her father.

RIP Director Isao. Too bad he never got to use that cat toy he bought.

Vegeta's sacrifice at home.
I get what they tried to do but this villain feels like some filler brawl, so is death of Isao.
This season feels like deja vu from other anime. Same tropes everywhere.

Why was Kafka running when he could have flown to Isao's location? That part left me feeling kinda confused, ngl.

Anyways, still a highly enjoyable episode. Mainly because it was all action-focused and that's the area where Kaiju No.8 anime shines the most.
As for Isao, I gotta say I really disliked him during the last third of S1 but having him throwing punches like All Might was truly a delight to watch. RIP tho 🙏

Hmm... with how no.9 absorbs other "numbers".

I guess this means if he actually ate all other numbers, he would literally become a Kaiju God huh...

With the current state no.9 is in, it feels like he's obtained 2 numbers (with Isao).

I wonder what's no.9's current power rating now... which also makes me wonder... will Kaijuman (MC) be able to unlock that shadow no.8 mode when he fought Isao while the Kaiju inside him had control.

The Isao fight was the bittersweet definition of plot convenience. The actual animation was stunningly awesome. However, plot wise its stupid and inconsistent. The entire emotional impetus of this fight began with Kafka swearing that Kaiju No. 9 wasn't going to get away this time. We literally had a whole episode with this in mind, and Kafka overcomes his inner demons to get to this point. But then, once Kafka easily defeats what should've been No. 9, No. 9 has some secret plan that wasn't at all introduced nor foreshadowed involving the director, targeting him for his weapon. Putting aside all of the plot issues with this (like if you're trying to distract the First Division, why make a feint attack in the literal same city as your actual real target) and the reasoning why he doesn't go after any other Kaiju weapons, this would've been fine is Isao is given a proper final fight. There's the trope of the weapons taking years off one's life, and Isao does so, giving up his life to defeat the villain. But instead, Kaiju No. 9 wins yet again and is stronger than ever before despite taking an unplanned for blast capable of destroying an entire city. Isao's sacrifice is meaningless, and all he did was give his weapons away to the enemy. The retreat consideration is brushed aside for stupid reasons, despite how easy it would've been for him to retreat TOWARDS Kafka and Narumi. And sure, not every sacrifice in anime needs to work: sometimes its better when it doesn't. But when the villain should already be defeated and he's using his last gambit to pull one over on the good guys, it doesn't make sense for him to win. Basically, Isao was fucked by the plot and Kaiju No. 9 is just some constant mastermind with protagonist level plot armor. Like is there some reason why No. 9 constantly keeps getting bailed out?

Of course, the moment an important character’s about to die, Kafka suddenly forgets how to fly. Also, Isao said it has the ability to track his location, so how exactly does that stop him from running toward Kafka and the captain? Such a worthless and stupid death, but I guess it’s my fault for expecting anything better from this.
@LessThanAnimeFan My same thoughts on the running towards Kafka part. It's clear they realized this was an issue too because they had that throwaway line about not being able to retreat, so it was clear to me at that moment that Isao, the literal director of the entire anti-Kaiju defense force, was just a plot sacrifice. Very disappointing imo

The lack of sound effects in this episode was really odd. I suppose technically the focus was on background music and whatever but there were power-up scenes with no noise and even a few hits with no sound either. Maybe I'm weirdly conscious of sound effects in my anime but this episode had multiple points where it felt like either corners were being cut or they didn't know what they were doing so they just went with nothing.

Masterpiece of an episode, in my opinion. The fight between Isao and #9 was spectacular. Although Isao literally risked it all to erase #9 from existence, the latter is practically indestructible. He’s got it all, strength, agility, and durability. Literally unbeatable. I wonder how they’re going to beat him.

1.Bad animation with many static frames.
2.Poor use of the soundtrack/OST (low volume and poorly timed music(Example: the main battle ends before the music even reaches its peak - feels like it at least).
3.Cheap 3d("blood" spilling from kaiju 9 looking like an old mortal kombat blood animation).
4.Almost no sound effects(making the battle feel like an ASMR,because the few sounds that appear are really low and no sound effects from the wind during the laser explosion, you can see the clothes from other characters almost flying and no sound, nor from wind, laser or explosion, even the rocks collapsing near Isao has no sound).
Overall bad Ep.

Absolutely terrible writing mad no sense at all!!! you are telling me for once.... like first time ever number 8 who can break the sound barrier runs as slow as a human and just can not get there in time? IDK about loyalists this is a stupid....lazy concept to force a story and make an awesome moment..total trash outside the realm of the built-in capabilities that have already been presented.

This was not only the worst episode of Kaiju No. 8, but also the weakest of the entire anime season. It tries hard to pull at the audience’s emotions, yet completely falls flat with cheap twists and poorly executed choreography.

Kaiju No. 9's goals were to kill Kaiju No. 8 and take Kaiju No. 2's powers. Used a deviation to sneak into the Defense Force Base, and attacked Shinomiya Isao, since he's the user of Kaiju No. 2 weapon.

Isao fought with his all, but he's old and he couldn't match with Kaiju No. 9. Not sure if he's still alive, but his body is taken over by Kaiju No. 9.

Hibino Kafka, Narumi and Kikoru face off against Kaiju No. 9. Let's see if they can defeat Kaiju No. 9 or it will escape.

Poor Kikoru. She heard some praise from her father after who knows how long, and not soon after, she loses her father to a numbered Kaiiju. We also get to see the flashback from Isao's POV.

This show fell apart fast—romantic angle is purged, Hibino’s arc is purged, power scaling went from 0 to 100 in the blink of an eye. All balance is gone. Never seen hype fall like this so fast, very unfortunate.

One of the most disappointing sequels. Also, what’s with the ending song, it sounds like Coldplay? That erectile dysfunction will get in the way with Shinomiya.

We’ll always have S1. The MHA syndrome is showing up here, I don’t know what medication is necessary. Don’t see how you can turn around losing this major character either—losing All-Might ruined MHA. Welp, I guess dysfunctional boy will have to have a new training montage, it’s the only way. Baddie souped-up way too fast.
