A perfect example of this is shit like "009-1". It nails that stylistic, retro aesthetic while delivering a strong, mature, and sexy female protagonist. The story keeps a semi-serious tone and presents thoughtful themes, all while including fanservice that actually fits the vibe. "009-1" isn’t the kind of cringe fetish-bait made to entertain horny teenage brats, either. It’s classy, cool, and rare as hell. The fanservice feels like an intentional stylistic layer, not the focus. The spy-thriller setup stays intact, the tone never devolves into parody, and the protagonist actually has depth beyond just being typical Waifu eye candy bait.
There’s simply not a lot of anime like this. Or at least not enough that actually nail the vibe it gives. You’ve got this rare blend of cool sci-fi espionage, a femme fatale lead, and a semi-serious-ass story with political undertones, all while embracing its pulp roots. Nowadays, anime with strong female leads usually goes full Moe brat, full Edgelord, or full Ecchi. Rarely do we get that stylish, balanced middle ground that "009-1" hits.
In short: Stylish without being vapid, Sexy without being exploitative, Mature without being self-serious, and Action-packed without being completely fucking brain-dead.
Other examples would be the original 90s "Agent AIKa" OVA and "Najica Blitz Tactics". Yeah, they’re way more tongue-in-cheek and overloaded with fanservice. Though, they still scratch a similar itch. They’re stylish, action-driven, and built around confident, sexy female leads doing spy or military-style missions. They’re fun, self-aware, and unapologetic about what they are. And yeah, they absolutely flood the viewer with cheeky, obnoxiously over-the-top gratuitous perpetual panty shots the entire time, in a semi-serious pseudo-spy setup that you just don’t see anymore in modern Anime. But more than that, I will emphasize and say it again... They are actually fucking FUN and extremely entertaining for what they offer. lol
What’s frustrating is how little of this kind of Anime exists today. The kind that perfectly blends: Over-the-top panty fanservice that’s bold but not brainless done just to only arouse the viewer, Sleek or futuristic aesthetics, Competent hyper-feminine mature women in lead roles, and plots that aren’t Shakespeare but still not pure smut either.
This is a specific mix. Sexy, badass, stylish, without crossing fully into parody or hentai territory is basically dead.
Instead, what we get today is either: Hyper-censored “safe” heroines built for bland mass appeal, Waifu-bait with zero substance, Or even gritty “girlboss” types that strip away any actual sensuality.
There used to be room for pulpy, B-movie-style Anime that didn’t take itself too seriously, but still had style, attitude, and a distinct personality to them. Now everything’s either sterile, formulaic, or full-on degenerate. The balance is gone. And beyond that, things are just too “safe” now to pull off the kind of cheeky, obnoxiously gratuitous panty-showcasing chaos that made shows like the original 90s "Agent AIKa" OVA and "Najica Blitz Tactics" so distinct.
We might not need panty shots every five seconds... But hey, I wouldn’t complain if they brought that back either. What I think anime does need is more of that boldness... The kind of confident, in-your-face energy that modern "Ecchi" doesn’t even dare touch anymore. That flair. That unapologetic, mature femininity. The industry could give us sexy women who actually feel like grown-ass characters again, at least once in a while... and not just an endless flood of cutesy, sexualized Moe Waifu-bait brats. It sometimes just shocking that this industry just doesn't anymore...
I would think there is still a large enough demographic of men out there who grew up loving late 90s and early 2000s "Ecchi" that have grown out of seeing sexualize brats. Doesn't mean they need to disappear. But the industry could at least try to appeal back to loyal heterosexual male fans who have been into this medium for 2 and even 3 decades. Fans that likely have full blown careers these days or even married. Who still dump more money into this medium than a large majority of modern and younger groups, simply because they can. lol
Men who don't have the entitled mentality one sees flooding modern Anime fandom, nor are they simply just a bunch of man-children that have been living in their mothers basement since 2001. An industry should reward long term loyalty and not try to push that loyalty away, even if it's not intentional... Which is kind of how I personally feel this industry has been doing for quite a while now... sorry for the rant. lol
In fact even recently, and a few times in the past, a few real life acquaintances and friends have even asked if I could recommend shit like the original 90s "Agent AIKa" OVA and "Najica Blitz Tactics", I often struggle to find any type of real equivalent and even tired to title drop shit from "Shin Cutie Honey" to even something like "Grenadier", and still there isn't really anything that comes close to them to this day.
TL;DR? I’d write one, but I’m not sure a summary would help. lol |
