Anything before the 90s anime boom, though nowadays "old" varies to the point where it's more useful to refer to them by the decade

Well I started watching anime that exact year and like the differences in technology and style etc makes a bigger difference than perceived time. Yeah it was 10 years ago but nothing major has happened in the industry as a whole imo.

I consider old anime stuff before 2010 and like retro in the best sense for anything before 2000s. That is mostly for stylistic and technological reasons.

Though you can divide old and new by technical aspects, you can also use other criteria for it. For example, an epoch-making show drives a wedge.
-If you are a SF fan, it may be Gundam.
-If you are a fantasy fan, it may be Nausicaa.
-If you are ...
"isekai" also opened a new era. But I don't know where it began, since I'm not a keen fan.

Old anime is 20th century anime, obviously. Cel vs digital, yadda yadda

Also what I consider "old" anime is anything in 4:3 aspect ratio, I guess. I'm relatively new to anime.

An Anime being old changes over time. It always depends the time where are you are right now. It doesn't matter when someone started watching Anime for example in the late 90s, early 2010s, etc and obviously it doesn't matter when you were born since by 2025 all Anime released more than 10 years ago is already old. All Anime considered new now is going to be old 10 years after its release. It doesn't matter if they don't "look" old, an Anime from 10 yr ago look different from Anime released now.

I made this thread since some I read some people who started watching Anime in the 2000s or even in 90s are claiming such Anime "are not" old. I'm curious why they think like that since its obviously not true. Something released more than 15 years ago is def. old, no matter the reason. An Anime being old is obviously fine, its time to accept it as it should be. No need to be afraid of doing so. I love all Anime no matter the era.

What is old Anime for you and why?

The older one gets the passage of time starts to dilate in ones perspective. As an example when I was 21, I use to call someone my age a borderline pedophile if I saw they were dating a girl who just turned 18. Where today I am in my late 40s, I would think it being normal for someone who is 21 to be dating someone who was 18. I even think now it's normal for a man my age to be dating a woman over a decade younger then they are.

Where I stand in the passage of time now, I don't normally think of something as really 'old' unless a few decades have passed by. So to someone who is relatively still very young even in their early 20s they would likely even see something like "Re:ZERO" as an 'old' Anime being just about 9 years old by this time. Even my daughter who is in her early 20s now thinks "Overlord" is a franchise for old people simply because it's over a decade old to her. lol

It's like when I was still a teenage brat I use to call anyone who wasn't younger than being in their 20s some old geezer. lol

Earlier than 1985 or so feels old to me. Stuff from the late 80s and 90s represents the style of what I was introduced to with anime, so it still feels fresh.

Mentally I'm still in the 2015-ish era of anime (and novels too, funnily enough). I think quite a lot of people still are as well. While anime from then is a lot older than I assume (wdym Kill La Kill came out over a decade ago?) I definitely wouldn't say it's OLD old.

A lot of the comments here remark on transitions in anime during it's history, and I think that's a more insightful way to think about the age of an anime. Like, anime with old-school animation and outdated tropes (or even politics lol) would absolutely be viewed as "of it's time," whereas I don't think we've reached that point with anime from the mid 2010s yet.

Old anime for me is anything older than 2 years. It doesn't make a difference if that's 3 or 30 years. At this point in time, the reviews were written, the youtube videos were made, and the reddit battles have raged. The show now in the cooldown phase.

@Shortedout I'm in the mid-50s now, and for all my life "old people" were people 10 years older than me. That definition never changed, just my own age progressed:) Each new day somebody watches his first anime, feels "new gen" and says: I won't watch that old shit, it was made before I even was born.

Two years seems reasonable to me because it describes the trajectory of media on the hype cycle. Anything else is relative to the age of the speaker. @Kwanthemaster's meme expresses the same idea in a brilliant way.

@inim Yeah, that seems pretty reasonable. I see what you mean. Cause new can be any anime made at any time just depends on the watcher/reader. I also think that's a good point about the hype cycle. You know what I think I agree now lol. 2 years isn't a bad gauge. Its also funny seeing the meme as I wouldn't have described those as old haha.

Instead of endlessly debating the demarcation line between old and new anime I would instead propose introducing a third category of animes based on when they aired (aka their "age") - classic, which exists between old and new.

With the new category I would (of course very subjectively) define the types of animes as being:

Old - everything until the 1980s

Classic - 1990s-2000s

New/Modern - 2010s-present

"Old anime" means before Evangelion. That's when it became possible to imagine anime doing absolutely anything. It's when anime changed from a still developing medium to a fully developed medium.

I'll put my vote in for pre mass digitization (2005ish) is old school and post is new school.

Maybe the next anime "era" would be the heavy involvement of AI in the production (god forbid).

Anything made before July 2004 (Girls Bravo) is old.

Girls Bravo or newer is modern. I use Girls Bravo as the marker for the beginning of modern. I can't articulate the specific reasons yet.

to me, anything before 2007-2008 is "old". Around that time, technology changed a lot...animation quality began to drastically change due to digital animation(still miss good cel though...), voice actors started to sound much more natural(on average), and it was the beginning of the end for continuous long running shows...anything after those major changes is what i'd consider "modern" anime

If you are talking about "old" simply as a reference of time then that doesn't mean much here. I could say anything from 2025 is old now because numbers, and that won't mean anything.

I think pre-2010s would be generally perceived as old these days. Early 2000s now seems to have it's own identity in the same 80s and 90s have. On the other hand, 2010s doesn't seem very unique compared to today.

It's also hilarious how many people are talking about "cel era vs digital era" when majority of animators draw on cel. There are rather few studios that have gone completely digital like Science Saru and Comixwave.

I think that calling things "old" will always be a little divisive. But in the period between like 1995 and 2005 there was a huge shift in what anime looked like, sounded like, and how the storylines were constructed. For example, look at something like YuuYuu Hakusho. This would never be drawn or directed this way in the modern era. So, I think that somewhere around this point we can generally agree that there was a firm shift in anime. I would call anime before this period "old", generally speaking.

But there has also been a more recent shift in how anime has been made and commodified, maybe in the last ten years, that might be what OP is pointing to. That's more difficult. But I think the word "old" ruffles a lot of feathers and probably obscures the discussion.
