It's ok Hana. Even though she wasn't fully prepared for the radio show, she still wanted to prove herself.

Totonoi is an interesting person. With her experience and personality, I think Hana could learn from her. We still got the usual cinematic scenes that feels like an art form in the show.

Weekly dose of my fave totally not lesbians!! So proud of Hana for overcoming her anxiety and having a good radio broadcast with Kyoko!

I think she suffers from something a lot of naturally gifted people do. When you’re so used to being told you’re good at something and then you get to a place where everyone else is good, you sometimes retreat into your shell and get insecure. Not that Hana is jealous of the other members, but just seeing how good Mizuki, Kyoko and the others are definitely made her a bit insecure and nervous. Mizuki is a great senpai who wants to help Hana grow, but sometimes you need a different tool for a different situation. Kyoko was a much better advisor for the radio broadcast itself as she helped Hana settle in and just be herself.

I thought this was about to become Shokugeki no soma when Kyoko started having a fangasm over classic literature lmao. She really brings up a good point about just reading what you like reading for the NHK cup. Don’t overthink it. Yea, sure the story being interesting might help a bit, but ultimately people are listening for the reader. You got this Hana! Play to your strengths

I loved how Hana shouted out her new friend too on the broadcast aw that was so cute!! Love this show sm, great ep

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I guess an obvious course of action that our Hana-chan would be introduced as a guest in the school radio show eh ... as a member of the radio club right, though she blew it up totally the first time, lol. But yes, there is always the next time right.

Still, for someone who reads to children often, kinda surprised she was this nervous. Also, Ryouko did it with Mizuki once too, and don't want to do it again
͜ʖ ͡°).

Ryouko saved the day. There can always be new type of pervert in anime, now literature pervert what a girl.

Hana got it right second time, well done.

Hana is making progress, although she failed miserably in her first attempt at radio announcing. Ryouko's help made her lose her fear, not only with improvisation, but also by giving her the confidence to choose a play she really likes for the contest. Let's hope she doesn't end up like Ryouko, fetishising classical works.

An seems jealous of Hana's progress. It's hard to handle envy when you see someone advancing in a talent just for fun, making mistakes but still advancing, while you're stagnating and have even given up on pursuing the category you like. It is a challenge to handle envy towards another person, but even more so anger and disappointment with yourself. I hope An stops being an annoying character and has a good development.

That was a difficult episode to get through, I really don't like scenes where characters get put before an audience and are expected to do something but fail, it's always a hard watch.

Much like Hana, I remember being extremely nervous to the point of panic during my first time speaking to a large audience. It's a treat to see her grow and face being a co-host for the lunch broadcast program head-on after her initial failure. It's not a surprise that Ryouko-senpai is super passionate about classical Japanese literature, something that Hana seems to like as well. Which source will Hana end up picking for the NHK cup? If I had to guess it would also be Sarashina Nikki just like Ryouko.

It almost made me dislike this episode because Hana failed. Good thing Ryouko saved the day and was far more useful as a beginner's tutorial than Mizuko.

Speaking of Ryouko, I like that she is a literature hentai. lol

She may prove to be a promising support character too.

Hana being very nervous on her first radio show felt pretty relatable. Some people have a natural knack for things like this, but for others, speaking to an audience, whether it be on a radio or on stage must feel rather daunting and pressurising.

Mizuki is definitely a natural on the radio, but it was Ryouko that was the better fit for Hana to take advice from and thanks to that, she was able to perform well on the radio show, even mentioning about marshmellows that she talked about with her cute class friend. Her progression has been really nice so far and I do hope that she also follows Ryouko's path and chooses classic literature for her recitation.

As for An, her viewpoint on what she thinks is the best approach differs a lot from Ryouko. An isn't wrong about wanting to choose something that's the best fit for her, but I do side with Ryouko's viewpoint of wanting to recite a segment from your own favourite story and not caring about what others think about your preferred choice.

Whatever Hana chooses in the end, I hope she makes her choice without any regrets. =)

At least Mizuki handled the awkward silence pretty smoothly. When I was in the school, the club that did the morning announcements used a live video feed. So, good thing Hana wasn't also on camera fumbling her first broadcast. People will much more easily forget hearing the stuttering introduction than actually seeing the awkwardness from a viewer's perspective. It was a solid episode, but probably my least favorite so far. It was nice to see Hana deepening her relationship with some other cast members, but I would be much more excited about Hana and Mizuki furthering their bond.

Another great episode, Hana's finally starting to come out of her shell more. This whole episode was pretty much about how different styles suit different people, both in terms of the kinds of literature they choose to read and how they engage with the world.
I thought Totonoi's reading was especially beautiful, the different visual representations of each of their reading styles has been perfect so far.
Also I really enjoy how this anime sounds, the environment is very clean and pronounced, it's very satisfying to listen to, the lack of a bgm makes it stand out more as well.
Really glad this is getting a great adaptation

Mizuki shouldn't have put Hana on the spot and expected her to ad lib since Hana is pretty shy but at least horny Ryoko had her mostly speak from a script which helped her greatly.

Even though I have criticized this show and last episode, I gave it a 2/10 and said I was going to quit if this episode wasn't any good and I actually like how this episode was because it showed Hana's character grow which is something I was worried about because it took us until the 4th episode to get her character growth. I can see the pieces for the future episodes and hopeful it works out, but I'm not completely sold. Maybe the next episode will make me fully on board.

Yay! Hana made a friend!
Loved the Hana noises this episode lol, feels like she became better at expressing herself, and proud that she did the radio well on her 2nd try!

Episode 4/5

It was very relaxing and at the same time the evolution in Hana's communication was also incredible.

Hana showed herself in this episode to be willing to socialize, and the club's means of communication is apparently working. With Mizuki there were some problems, due to the fact that Mizuki is a little evasive and too spontaneous for someone who doesn't have much communication like Hana, but with Totonoi the conversation worked perfectly, Perhaps because Totonoi is calmer and more patient, it made Hana open up her opinions and start the conversation. That scene of Hana dropping that script and talking normally with totonoi was so rewarding, it's a great evolution for someone who likes to recite since communication is fundamental.

Now I wanted to talk about the setting of this anime, like the author's idea was brilliant, to make an island with a school nearby and students... The wind when it passes through Hana on the boat, and the movement of the waters are beautiful, I also admire some angles in which the anime tries to highlight nature, like for example when Hana was talking in the room with her friend and the angle at a certain point highlighted trees and birds around the room. The ambiance of the recitations is also very engaging and has an atmosphere that really emphasizes the recitation, I also like that.

I don't think this is really working, sadly.

My ears aren't hearing the atmosphere and the emotion in the voices that is supposedly blowing away these characters. The audio doesn't match the level of the beautiful visuals.

I think the problem is they're already doing "anime voice acting" in normal conversation scenes, so that when they "amp it up" during recitation, the jump in quality and the change in voice aren't very obvious; it does sound better, but not by much.

If they just broke the rules a bit and went with extremely natural voice acting in normal interactions, then the contrast would've made the performances feel more striking. Like when voice actors use their normal voice in interviews, then suddenly do the character voice and sound completely different and "heightened."

But I also understand that I have a huge handicap; I don't speak Japanese and can't immediately appreciate the clarity and nuances of these performances.

It doesn't help that the vast majority of Japanese I hear is not "normal Japanese." It's anime, which is already "performance." I don't have a good frame of reference to compare these performances against.

The show is still enjoyable as a school anime, but I'm just disappointed that I can't enjoy this as much as I'd initially hoped.

@perseii I share your view which you put much better than I could. I will still watch and enjoy the show for "proper reading" rules and their attempt to do a unique lesser known competition. I can't understand the quality difference I and while I find the visuals proper when they are trying harder, it isn't wowing me the same way a "standard idol/girls band" show can when they start singing/playing. A part of my mind says it is contrived, but another louder part tells me to ignore and focus on the unique premise.

Hana trying to read the Sarashina Diary sure invokes the fangirl in Ryoko over classic literature, and Mizuki giving her the chance to do broadcasting live during their school's lunch break, Hana unfortunately fumbled and blanked out trying to gloss together with Mizuki, which she just kept silent. It's OK to fail on the first try, there's always a learning curve in everything.

The 1st Years' outdoor education trip hosted by both Mizuki and Ryoko, they sounded like their usual friendship conversation, and that's something that Hana is kind of missing right at the moment. On the other side, Ryoko sticking to The Sarashina Diary for the competition, it may put her on the losing end, but it defines her love for reading (which pretty much aligns with Hana's desires to just read)..,and she almost went on a tangent being an otaku about it. On that thought, Hana giving hosting another try with Ryoko, and her off-script ad-libbing is easier to catch for Hana aligning with her topic.

Starting simple for Hana, might very well get her to be better.

@perseii Thank god, someone else also thinks that way. I thought i was going insane, but the whole anime just does not work for me in the slightest. It also feels much more heavy handed in its emotional moments than Hibike Euphonium.

Yep, that was embarrassing lol. It could've been more have they been live telecasting that or something xD

I mean I won't say Hana nailed it in the second try with Ryouko, but yeah, at least she was able to calm her nerves. Not sure what that other girl getting pissed off over tho.

The last day I watched an episode of this was July 7th, there was a day I started this episode shortly after but I didn’t finish it, and so here I am two months later finally watching this show again lol. To put it simply, I greatly underestimated how much time it would take to watch a 20 show season this summer (I usually pick 15-17), I had time to watch stuff on the side but being in the middle of a long series at the time (Maison Ikkoku), watching things alongside my buddy, and also starting up another show alongside this one when the summer began, it pretty much left no time for Flower and Asura. Well with the summer season being nearly over, I’m finally devoting time to this show again, it did not deserve to be left in the dust like that.

With that out of the way, I actually think this was one of the best episodes so far, mainly because radio broadcasts resonate with me more than recitations or speeches, it reminded me a bit of a show about radio I really liked called “Wave, Listen To Me” (hey looks like I mentioned this on my episode 1 post too lol). I really liked the differences in Hana’s experiences doing radio, Mizuki just went in and let things flow naturally which Hana wasn’t ready for at all, but Ryouko stuck to the script for the most part which allowed Hana do perform better, I will say Ryouko definitely should have communicated beforehand to Hana that she would be going off script at one point but thankfully Hana did much better this time. And personally I’m a bigger fan of improvised stuff myself, being a big jam band fan and all lol, and also someone who does game Let’s Plays on YouTube, I just hit the record button and start talking, that’s how I’ve always liked it, but I completely get wanting to stick closer to the script like Hana and Ryouko prefer, it’s nice going in with clear instructions.

Also, Ryouko having a “literature fetish” is quite funny, it really is a contrast to how composed she usually is but I really like that addition to her character, and also that she needs Mizuki to let her know when to stop yapping lol, sometimes you just need to be told when to shut up, that’s a real thing.
