Hi friends,

I'm seeking recommendations for the most depressing, haunting, melancholy, and heart-wrenching music possible.

I'll start out with some of my favorites:

Losing Feeling - Fog Lake

Days of Candy - Beach House

The More I Cry - Alice Boman

Everybody Hurts - Alice Boman

Expecting to Fly - Buffalo Springfield

Blackout - Muse

Goodnight, Travel Well - The Killers

No Surprises - Radiohead

Hurt - Johnny Cash

Drug Song - Dave Bixby

On the top of my head are these:

Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden

I Can't Handle Change - Roar (Probably the saddest song in here, just hits close to home. And the Bridge towards the Outro's just heartwrenching)

And I Love Her - Kurt Cobain's Cover

Sextape - Deftones

worldstar money - Joji

I'm So Tired - Fugazi

@bellingsince05 Thank you for these! I thoroughly enjoyed all 5 songs. My favorite was "I Can't Handle Change," that slide guitar sound was beautiful.

As a big Beatles fan, I loved the dark take on one of my favorite songs of theirs, "And I Love Her." Lana Del Rey's "West Coast" samples the song (you can hear it before the chorus hits at 1:14.)

"I'm So Tired" had Radiohead vibes.

@pillowofwinds You're welcome! I'm delighted to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed all the 5 songs! if you enjoyed 'I Can't Handle Change', try checking out their EP if you want with the same name as the song! and also if you're interested check out the story behind that EP, on YouTube, I feel like you'll better feel the raw emotion and the dark vibe of the EP better.

And also, yes! I love West Coast by Lana Del Rey, I think I discovered both the Beatles and Kurt Cobain's 'And I Love Her' through this song lol, I love her use of the sample, the three of them are such great songs in their own ways. Ultraviolence was and still is such a vibe.

And lastly I agree with you on I'm So Tired having Radiohead vibes, found the song randomly on smart shuffle and liked it.

Αἱ γενεαὶ πᾶσαι which is a Byzantine hymn that's sung on good Friday is the saddest song I've ever heard both due to the lyrics/music and also the context

Post two I know. Both are by The Stanley Brothers. Probably one of the best-known bluegrass artist out there.

The first song is called Little Bessie. Little Bessie is a song performed from the first person perspective of young girl dying while being comforted by their mother.

The second song is called Come All Ye Tender Hearted. Come All Ye Tender Hearted is a song about the mother of two small children leaving for a bit, only to return and see that their home is on fire and that their children died embracing each other.

Be safe and well travels,
Chris

I don't make the habit of listening to sorrowful songs, but there are a few that strike such a chord with me in my library.

I've always thought Red River Valley was a sad song of unrequited love, with some distinct interpretations;

Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukou) also leaves a memorable impression; the tone seems light and happy, and you can even hear the smile in the singer's voice, but there is something distinctly melancholic in the rhythm and the tonal delivery of the lyrics, without even understanding the lyrics. Though the lyrics do confirm it is a rather sad song if translated.

Mazzy Star put out a few sad tunes, memorably Flowers in December--while lyrically inventive, open to interpretation, there is the unmistakable quality of regret in there.

Tom Waits is a character with a storied discography, but he has some poignant songwriting ability.

Warren Zevon was similarly a beautiful songwriter, from comedy to tragedy.

And of course, there's the world's greatest cover artist, who made any song he ever touched his own.

I'm sure there's more I can think of, but this already took a minute to fish around my own collection of artists and songs for sad-sounding stuff. May it strike your fancy.

Niji no Kanatani - Reona [SAO Alicization needed to be watched and checked the lyric translation]

Fix you by Coldplay and Napraw by LemON, these 2 are too sad to me as they describe a certain period of my life, till today I can't listen to these songs.

Ne Rozumiju by Vixen
Cisza by Bednarek
W moim życiu by Paluch
Hymn by Sanah [the lyrics is by Juliusz Słowacki, as it is his poet sang by Sanah which increased the sadness of this track, just understanding the lyrics breaks the heart, adding into it the historical knowledge of background and times when Słowacki lived makes it even more sad]
Tbh I don't think there's something which would top the sadness of Hymn

Can't think of other songs:

If you're interested you shouldn't have troubles of finding English translation of these Polish stuff.

I'm just going to post the full album.

Basically the album is about the singer dying.
And it actually is a post-mortem release.
