1. IDK about Yahiko being enough for now, it's not like he's a paying customer or anything.

What i meant to say is that he's enough to keep the swordstyle alive.
As for money

3. I guess I was hoping that since it's a re-make, they have been given another opportunity to 'get with the times' and fix any issues with the source material to improve it. Not just brush up on the animation.

Progressivism is typically a Western thing (especially the USA). The rest of the world doesn't care , and definitely not Japan.
They have a very high amount of respect for the Authors and their creations , and won't change anything because "the world need to change".

Only very , very few Animes actually "re-actualized" the source material , and of the ones i know , they just changed the setting , not the characters.
This Kenshin adaptation's goal is to be closer to the source material , so it's definitely not one of them

And if you look at the recent works , none of them changed anything to those cliches/treatment of characters either.

I'd recommend you to read Tokuhitsuban.
It fixed some of the shortcomings (Like money or Kaoru's role) , and it's only 11 Chapters long.

Keeping the swordstyle alive with just 1 student is kind of dangerous IMO. It's a high risk profession, and you're putting ALL the eggs in 1 basket. If anything happened to him, boom, done. Not smart.

The money thing, is it in the series epilogue? That is much later, right? Who's taking care of the bills today?

IDK why you're happy with the them taking a step back, if the older version is more progressive than the manga, and the older version was pretty well received. So are you saying they had a high amount of respect for the author and their creation only in this remake version compared to the original one?

The author lost a lot of .... respect ... after you know what. I'll admit it took a lot for me to even watch this, because I liked the older version and I had high hopes for it like I did for Trigun Stampede (which IMO did it right).

Now I'm not so sure if it's still a masterpiece. The previous arc's duel and voice acting was amazing, and these 2 episodes just kind of left me feeling meh.

I've watched a lot of old OVAs and the remakes and some definitely do change the characters.
* Bubblegum Crisis vs. Bubblegum Crisis remake (Priss in OG is way more badass than the new version)
* Guyver OVA (Gritty, gory, nudity) vs. Guyver Series (Sanitized, less horror, more Shounen, guy is more wimpy and less "disturbed")
* Dirty Pair (over the top with nudity) vs. Dirty Pair Series (Sanitized, mass appeal, characters dumbed down and slightly less DGAF reckless)
* Trigun vs. Trigun Stampede (Vash is definitely way more tortured in the new version, but supposedly that's true to manga not the OG series where he's more fun loving)

I don't read manga (except for 1) as I can't make the time for it.

Because that's closer to the Manga.

Yes , the old adaptation has some things better than it.
But this one is closer to what the story and its events really are.

Kinda , yeah.

The director of the previous adaptation was said to be a massive fan of the Manga , and made changes he would have liked to see.
His intentions were good , but the result was that the Author absolutely hated everything he did. (Especially for the Tokyo Arc and the Seisou-hen OVAs) The only changes he made that were praised was the ones of the Tsuioku-hen OVAs.

Not in Japan.
He's still very loved , and his works never were impacted. (Aside from the Hiatus when it was first revealed)

I won't talk much as i didn't watched them/read their source material.
But none of them seems to have changed them to match their time , from you have written.

With Megumi on board, she can be a rather peculiar woman, fighting for Kenshin's body and heart at the cusp of Kaoru's chagrin. With that said, opium is the new business in town, though Sanosuke is not willing to take chances being nice to someone who created opium in the first place. Just leave him be for now, it seems. Megumi getting accosted by in broad daylight, this is only just a warning, but it's a lifetime being in a cage where her own creation will be her downfall. And the others, reading her farewell letter in a hurry, aren't so fast to give up on her just like that, and that is their mission to save her.

Megumi is brave enough to go back to Kanryu's mansion and face him, though her plot to revenge and assassinate him goes out of hand. Not to worry, since Kenshin, Sanosuke and Yahiko are man enough to face him and his army. Being an entrepreneur, Kanryu can only confront him on business terms, while Shinomori's Imperialist mentality already knows what he's here for. Activating the Oniwaban Group is only a matter of action, and Shinomori at least lets Megumi die slowly in the false hope that Kenshin and the rest will not make it to her.

The roundabout battle within Kanryu's mansion, it's going to be fierce.

Sano had a point to hate Megumi as the one whose making all the drugs. But Kenshin easily clap the bad boy ideal by his own reason to act; save the pretty woman boy, no need to think twice!

A solid episode to start the battle between Kenshin team and Oniwaban group for real. Yahiko for once being helpful by pickpocket those gun, while Sano beat all those crap. Let's see if the fights worth my effort hype....

I guess I can't really be mad at that, since they did the same thing with Trigun Stampede and I actually was one of the few who preferred Stampede to the OG.

I recently did a rewatch of both El Hazard and Guyver (old OVA plus new version remakes) and the remakes were a lot more toned down, less violence, less nudity, more "mainstream." Ironically it feels like for Rurouni Kenshi and Trigun it's the old version that is more "mainstream" compared to the remakes which are grittier and more true to the manga. Interesting, huh?

Well , they have been here for decades now.

90% of people discovered the work with them rather than the Manga/Remake , and came to love it. (Them being classified as "classic that one must like" can also play a role in how they are perceived.)
After experiencing one version , it's always hard to like more (or just as much) a new one , that distort what you discovered beforehand...

Even for very popular Remakes such as Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood or Hunter x Hunter 2011 , there is still a good chunck of those who watched the Original one before that still prefer it over its Remake.

Edit : But i guess you were talking about "mainstream" , in the sense of censored ?

In that case , it's true that nowadays watchers wants more mature stories , with more gore/violence/sadness.
It's part of what made the success of Shingeki no Kyojin and Chainsaw Man , for example.
The public just changed over time. Do you realize that Japanimation and Mangas are now ones of the most popular medias ? Time changes everything.

Yup, like more toned down language, no nudity or nipples, lots of gore removed at least for Guyver and El Hazard. The remakes were positively tame in comparison, all the ecchi groping and lesbian things were removed when they were made mainstream.

There's definitely a demographic shift towards more mature content after the success of AOT which paved the way for CSM, Hells Paradise etc, which is good for mature audiences. Animation can run the gamut, there should be something for everyone. I don't read manga in general, but I still feel they should at minimum try to do an adaptation that more or less respects the original story that made it famous, I think we can both agree on that.
