I am thoroughly disappointed at how this so called Mikan Arc went. Sure the action was nice, lots of GAR moments, but not enough development concerning Mikan. The other character-centric arcs developed the other characters fairly well, but it feels like Mikan got the short end of the stick on this one...
There were lots of uber ~moe Mikan Mikan moments and that is probably the redeeming factor of this episode. The fanboy in me would rate this whole episode and arc a 1, curse the fact that I am a reasonable person!
Next episode...two dresses?
Is this one of the odd jobs Itsuki takes to make some side cash for Astral? Tune in to next week's Rental Magica to find out!
Out of Astral, Mikan is probably have least attribute in terms of character. I didn't expect a lot of developments on her personality. After all, the Katsuragi obasan said Mikan's talent is inadequate. After all this, Itsuki-tachi finally learned a lot about the Katsuragi family and hometown. In the end, Mikan put her "emo" feeling aside and she was able to decide her own life. Her purpose now is to be a beloved family of Astral.
So this episode is practically shows that the new Astral is fully reborn now. With Itsuki able to master his Glam Sight, he's able to backbone the company and take control. The combination of magic plus little favor from Goetia's leader, the Oni ritual can be completed. Great display of teamwork so I loved this episode overall.
i think they have developed most of the characters well, but now they are running out of time. only four more epp. perhaps next season they will add more..if there is one. we shall see.

I know what you mean. I've enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but I don't know that it's one I'd want to re-watch again. And its premise seemed so good too!
Addie rocks, but it was kind of weird that she had to come to the rescue. Glam sight fails! And wasn't Itsuki only supposed to take it off in life or death, according to his promise with Honami?? Perhaps this counted as such.
And man, what a mean grandmother. Making it out like turning Mikan into a human sacrifice was all for her benefit... yeah, right...
The supposed actual events of the oni arc in the novel...

Suzuka isn't evil at all. She was going to peel Mikan's spell power in order to save her. People who succeeded to excellent ancestor's spell power but don't have a magic talent, like Mikan, will lose control of her overwhelming spell power as they grow up and cause spell wave contamination some day. In that case, Kaori, the next leader, has to kill her. Which is worse, killed by her older sister she loves or peeled off her spell power as a sacrifice (however it hurts her soul and shortens her life). Mikan's grandmother chose the next best thing she thought. She pretended a cold person because she thought that it breaks her heart if the gentle grandma execute such a cruel ritual. And many people were speaking ill of Mikan behind her back because she is an incompetent while Kaori is the highest genius since Katsuragi clan had started. The grandmother knew how she had been suffering from it. So she wanted Mikan to live as a normal girl who is not fettered by the magic and Katsuragi clan's duty. In the end, she realized Mikan's preparedness, living as a magician even if she will be killed some day, and promised to accept even if her selection results in the worst.
In addition, she didn't blame Itsuki even if the ritual was disturbed by him, because she had knew Astral members also like Mikan as much as she loves.
Sealing the hatred spell power which had been accumulated for over a thousand years. It is too strong to purify, even the Katsuragi clan's magic. If they don't seal the oni's hatred, it spreads and normal people are affected and kill each other, even if they are family, friends and lovers.
Tachibana Yuzuru, another moribito and the true culprit at this incident. He saw Gara that collected a part of oni into the King Solomon's magical fetish(pot) forcibly three years ago, when Mikan's mother failed the ritual and killed by oni. He asked him to teach how to seal it in secret. It can't seal the oni for a long time but can withstand until he throw it away into the lay line.He understood that his activity is foolish and it brings catastrophe to many irrelevant people. But he couldn't stand why only Kaori and Mikan, like the younger sisters for him, have to do that painful duty(and he thanked Mikan's mother for being kind to him). He knew that successive mikos who had sealed the oni in their body couldn't endure that spell power in their last years and actually saw how the former leader of Katsuragi clan, Suzuka's older sister, died ruthlessly. (Suzuka dismissed Tatsumi from his post because the moribito's true duty is to kill the miko who can't endure oni's hatred power. He and Kaori became intimate too much. She thought it is too cruel for them).
Isurugi Kei, the association(Kagezaki)'s spy who plays the most active part in detecting the true culprit. He understood Mikan's inferiority complex very well. He has a talent as much as Nekoyashiki's but his ancestors weren't magician, so he can't become a great magician definitely.
Kagezaki, the one who asks Astral (Addie and Kuroha) to help investigating the suspicion between the Katsuragi clan and Ophion. He showed a part of his overwhelming power. Of course Addie and Kuroha's activity was cut.
The union of celtic magic, onmyoudou, and King Solomon's magic (not use individually like anime. Honami connects among Itsuki and other two who are at the distant place, Nekoyashiki's shikigamis draw the super enormous magic circle, and Addie sends Asmodai's spell power in large quantities to activate the magic circle). They succeed in creating a receptacle to keep the oni's hatred spell power as a new ley line. It is impossible to integrate them excepting Itsuki because different magics repulse each other.
Asmodai, Honami's trump card, Nekoyashiki's trump card, and Kuroha's tenacious jealousy about evoking Asmodai.
The grandmother is a superior shinto magician and her attack is powerful. But they cut her battle scene completely.
And future episode titles were revealed.
23: 取り替え児 (The changing)
Final episode: アストラル (Astral)
If you are the Honami fan, you might be disappointed at dragon arc. This episode decreased her fans when the novel was released because...
the man who is intimate with Honami appears and she betrays Astral following his advice in order to "strike out her past mistake" rather than to "heal Itsuki's glam sight".
Addie fans increased oppositely because of one of the most impressive scenes about her feeling for Itsuki.
MajorAddiction said: yeah it was just "okay". I'm glad Addy is there to bother Itsuki again but I was a little disappointed she had to save them.
Yeah, she just showed up out of nowhere. As if Glam Sight isn't enough of a deus ex machina.
I thought this episode lacked something too... it seemed like a letdown after learning that Mikan was supposed to be sacrificed by her family. I thought there would be a bit more drama, but it was just Astral vs Monster.
at least i got my kuroha screentime this week. also addie screentime was also good.
the episode didn't feel completed, as some of you said already. but in any cases, i liked it.
kaori sure was a cute character. too bad we only got to see her twice. (or in two episodes)
talking about characters that only appear once or twice... i want to see lapis again.
and, i wanted to see more itsuki using both his glam sight and his now martial arts (maybe?) techniques.
also, why wasn't mikan's obaachan impressed by itsuki having a glam sight? everyone else seemed pretty impressed the first time they saw it.
Quite an interesting episode this time,i just love how this episode tend to add some bloody violence when the Big Oni killed and devoured the Mini Onis... Sadly enough, they didn't do much justice for Mikan in this arc.. T-T

Kuroha bringing Honami's broom and Witch hat.. Priceless....indeed.
Same here too,Lapis should have appear more instead of those two shota and baa-san siblings...

Maybe because she was too old and senile enough to even noticed it.. I surely hoped frail old Suzuka got devoured and chewed to pieces by that Oni. Screw those fact that she was just acting cold to 'save' Mikan. Who the heck would order her men to ignore a girl when she was trapped in an Oni's body and severely bleeding on her head!!? I really hate it when a bad character that i really hate suddenly went "Hey, i'm a gooooood person...." in the end.
A reasonable episode, I got my fair share of fight scenes :3 so I guess I'm satisfied for now xD. Although I'd have to agree character development of Mikan wasn't the best but oh well, So we now approach the final arc =D
