I was with the theory that Fujitora’s dice was in fact Luffy in the betting he spoke of, but it confused me why he was fighting Sabo if that was truly the case. There he proves to us that the theory was correct and that further, it could only mean one thing. That he fought Sabo, while not giving his all, as a show, to give an excuse for why he couldn’t do more. It definitely struck something in Sabo as he was hardly listening to Koala who was freaking out over his recklessness, nearly igniting a revolutionary-navy war. But, at the same time, this was something he had to do after losing Ace, nothing is too reckless now. Meanwhile, Fujitora met with the people on the plateau after Riku and the guys saved the citizens who had just tied them up, winning them over. There he made the bold and cool declaration that he’s all in on Luffy for this one. I’m somewhat curious on why that is, for him helping Luffy beat Doflamingo only ups the chances and I don’t recognize the downside there outside of an ideological view. The idea that both he and Viola have stated, that the navy is what allowed this to happen to Dressrosa in the first place and they have no right being the “heroes” anymore. But that said, it still feels illogical to me and somewhat confusing.
After a nice montage of everyone believing in Luffy and/or fighting for him, we had the remainder of his scene with Doflamingo. Luffy and Doflamingo were trading many blows, for some reason he hasn’t tried to control Luffy or Law once, but ultimately he still came out on top. Trebol was cut in a specific way so he couldn’t reform and as Law went to finish him off, Doflamingo swooped in, saved Trebol, and brutally cut Law down. I honestly cheered when I saw this, it was subconscious, but I do respect how much Doflamingo does care about his family and I was anticipating him saving Trebol so when he did it brought me some joy. From there, he tossed Luffy around and made Bellamy take him down with a blade, something painful for both of them, and certainly the Doflamingo way.
The more important thing was what Doflamingo ended up stating. He told Law that the thing he hates most is to be looked down upon and for these shitty kids to even think they could beat him for a second is an unbearable humiliation. Outside of reminding me of Crocodile, he continued and let us see a peak into what led to this moment. When he was in fact a descendant of the Celestial Dragon, he had slaves, he was born into respect and authority, and as we’ve seen the Dragons, they can see themselves being above others as a natural fact, when challenged they can be in literal disbelief, and they can at times not even understand why people hate them. Speaking here of that one in Sabaody being scared when Zoro didn’t bow to him, or the one in Fishman island which was isolated and shocked that, with no reason to help him, people wouldn’t. I can imagine Doflamingo felt this was a truth too. Yet, his father, apparently the only good Celestial Dragon ever, chose not to live that kind of life anymore. He chose to live a normal life, not have that authority, not abuse that power, and the people abused by the Dragon’s saw this as reason to make the family suffer.
As a ten year old, Doflamingo went from having inherent respect and authority and power, to being worthless, and being the target of mass abuse. This is interesting because, rather than my first interpretation, that Doflamingo killed his father who was a Dragon and was kicked out of the family or something akin to that, it was actually his father who chose to denounce Dragon life, and a broken Doflamingo who then killed him. To expand on the broken Doflamingo, if I recall, his mother died when he was eight, probably at the hands of their enemies. So, I take it Doflamingo blamed and killed his father, offering his head to Mariejoi’s wanting to be accepted, wanting to escape the life his father forced him in, but he wasn’t allowed back. I can imagine he was in fact alone, with Corazon and him in a world where they were seen as renegades by the Dragons and disgusting monsters to abuse by the people hence why his found family is so important. He felt a deep rage, I presume a sense of spite for the Dragons and he wanted to… destroy everything they dominated, which makes his line about destroying the world a little less cheesy. It may also hint at Law’s life being destroyed by the Dragons as well as Doflamingo deeply related to him. |
