Kuragehime (Princess Jellyfish)

Ever since her late mother took her to an aquarium when she was young, Tsukimi Kurashita has been obsessed with jellyfish, comparing their flowing tentacles to a princess's white dress. Now living with five other unemployed otaku women, 19-year-old Tsukimi spends her days as a social outcast dreaming of becoming an illustrator.

However, her life changes forever when one day, a beautiful woman unexpectedly helps her save a jellyfish in a local pet store. From then on, the stranger—confident, fashionable, and the complete opposite of Tsukimi and her roommates—begins to regularly visit the girls' building. This trendy hipster, though appearing shallow at first, harbors some secrets of her own, starting with the fact that "she" isn't really a girl at all, but a wealthy male college student named Kuranosuke Koibuchi!

Kuragehime was simulcast on FUNimation in Fall 2010, and became available as a DVD and Blu-ray release the following year. Kuragehime was also briefly available for streaming on Netflix as Princess Jellyfish.

I love stories where women can just be silly. Most of the time, you see that the "gag character who is actually important in the story" is a role reserved for men. On occasions where this isn't true, their gag is usually something related to being a woman or something that women are stereotypically associated with. But, in Kuragehime, you have a bunch of grown women whose main traits are that they're deeply invested in their hobby to a comical fault, and they are often given the responsibility of moving the plot forward.

Additionally this show just looks really good. Everyone has a cool character ...

Mixed Feelings

The anime was fine. It was boring, but fine. I didn't really expect the most complex plot line, since most people who watch this anime are watching for the fashion. Let's be honest here. Though would it kill them to actually try?! *sigh*

So the premise of this anime is that the main character is obsessed with jellyfish. Well, that's not all. Her mom tells her that girls will grow up to be princesses and blah blah blah. The problem is, the main character doesn't feel like a princess, since she doesn't upkeep her appearance. So she ... stays with other socially recluse women, and they all avoid 'TEH STYLUSH!!!' people. Their worlds will be turned upside down by a stylish cross-dressing man named Kuranosuke, who insists on hanging out with them.

The problem is, the characters are very one dimensional. They're extremely one note and have the depth of a puddle. They have an obsession, and that's their entire personality. Now, I can SOMEWHAT relate, because when I REALLY like something, I tend to hyper fixate on it. Though even with my issues of hyper fixation, I don't make something my entire personality. And I can't imagine suffering from social anxiety to the point of being afraid of people and freezing when a good looking and well dressed person looks at me. I mean, I do suffer from bouts of depression and get weird moments of anxiety, so I isolate myself. Though that period of extreme depression, to the point of isolation, usually doesn't last longer than two weeks. Though relatable side, I've seen socially awkward people. I worked at a sandwich shop, and I've met a few customers that were so socially awkward that they could barely even order food. That's actually sad... Which almost makes you want to emphasize with these characters. Except, they're all obnoxious and unlikable. Well, not all! Mostly just the one with the afro and Mayaya. Unfortunately, they get a lot of screen time for some reason, and so we're stuck with them. Outside of the group of socially awkward girls, we have Kuranosuke's older brother and Inari. The issue is, they're unlikable as well. Shuu, Kura's older brother, seemed to be set up to have a romance with Tsukimi, except... They abandon that romance to have a plot point with Shuu and Inari, that's trifling AF. It's very nasty and very foul, and it's just not funny.

Speaking of romance. Kuranosuke x Tsukimi is being set up, but it's just not good... They should've kept it as platonic. Shuu and Inari's plot line was so annoying that I was just waiting for it to end, but it just kept going. Like, why???

Though aside from the characters being boring and the romance being a flop, it was somewhat funny at times. The fashion did deliver, which was nice. If you're really into fashion and don't care about boring and one-note characters, then this is for you. Though if you want characters to have an actual personality, then look elsewhere. If you want actual good romance, and not flop romances, then look elsewhere.

For how highly rated this anime was it's surprising how unlikable the characters are. Tsukimi and Kuranosuke are fine enough but a bit bland but the NEETs? Oh my god what a desperately, deeply unpleasant collection of characters. They ranged from annoying to actively crappy people. It was hard to engage with the main storyline because yeah, I don't really care if a bunch of mooching jerks lose their house.

The designs for Tsumiki and Kuranosuke are pretty cute, I do like the art style when it's not drawing vaguely human shaped blobs. I don't know why the NEETs were so cartoony in comparison, it was ...
