Spy x Family Season 2

With her ability to read minds, Anya Forger is the only one who knows the true identities of her unconventional family. Her pretend father Loid operates as an elite spy code-named Twilight; her mother Yor kills on demand as the assassin Thorn Princess; and their dog, Bond, possesses the gift of precognition. Although they hide the truth from each other, this pretense of a perfectly ordinary family provides Anya with the genuine love and warmth that she longed for as an orphan.

Operation Strix—Loid's special mission to avoid potential war by gathering vital information and getting close to the powerful political figure, Donovan Desmond—is only possible if Anya plays her part right. She can either excel academically and become an Imperial Scholar at her prestigious school or make friends with Donovan's son, Damian. Neither is exactly easy, but with her adventurous attitude, Anya throws herself wholeheartedly into her mission as a Forger—all for the sake of international peace.

Spy x Family season 2 carries the "torch" in the same style as the previous installments. This one happened to focus more around Yor, which also made me realize that the show has done things in phases for lack of a better word. One season focused more on Loid, another one was pretty solidly centered around Anya and happenings around the school and season 2 basically "completes the trilogy" in terms of their specific environment being dominant for a little bit

This one had a little more of a serious tone but I understand that considering out of the three Yor's environment is most hectic? ... It actually feels weird writing that considering what Loid does isn't exactly a walk in the park either. Either way I have been wanting to see a little more related to Yor and I may have even mentioned that in my last review so I got exactly what I wanted.

I don't think the season being a little more fast paced and serious took away from it. You still had things like Anya passively, or maybe more accurately, "innocently" helping out because of her ability. You still have Loid being himself when it comes to Anya and you still have Yor being what who she is best.

I am not sure if I am in the minority with this one or not but I do hope at the very end of it all those three respective "secrets" they have hidden from one another get revealed to amongst them. Maybe it'll be 5 more seasons until the end of operation stryx and Anya being the kid she is just blurts out all of them in a frantic plea to keep the family together so she doesn't have to go back. Maybe ten years pass and Anya is almost done with school and that's when everything comes out to "close" the book and they all split... All I know is I would love for it to happen in one way or another. Season 3 here I come...

Mixed Feelings

I don't know...

I truly enjoyed this season, but I really, really, really don't know how to feel about it story wise.

While we could get quite a good arc full of dynamism, tension and action, half of the season consisted of slice-of-life fillers with little to no character development.

We do see the main three characters gradually growing feelings for each other, but this comes totally unsurprising as the first season had already made it clear that this would happen.

Other than these slight hints of emotions, the family dynamics remain almost the same and nothing changes about the world settings. There's nothing new. No important revelations, no ... characters learning something personal - or secret - about each other, nothing drastic that helps deepen their relationship any further than what we already expected.

That is, the whole season can be skipped without any issues.

And this is worrying because, in the modern times, such a slow developing series can easily be forgotten and replaced by a more dynamic and faster anime.
It would be sad to see an anime with such a good premise and characters flop due to pacing issues.

It’s misleading to call this the second season. At most it’s a part three. Very little changes compared to the first two “parts” (season 1 on Netflix). All the basics are the same, the actors, art, animation and the like are totally unchanged. It’s the same over the top organised chaos as the first season. There is something of note though.

Seeing as this “season” is many less episodes than the first I expected a cutback on the filler and more to the point story. This was not even remotely the case. I was very surprised to see that there was actually significantly MORE filler ... in this 12 episode season than the 25 episode first season. It was honestly kind of astonishing. In a way I was happy though, all this filler and the inconsistent content before and after the music further reinforced my point that there should have been an OVA series where these stories would go. Unfortunately we know that wasn’t the route they went with.

You might think I’m exaggerated about the filler but I’m not. Very little advanced the story in any way. Even the main arc of the season technically didn’t advance it at all. It was good to get some focus on Yor, and that arc was very enjoyable, but the rest of the season feels pointless. My memory isn’t doing me very well because I had a break during my watchtime but the ratio of filler to actual content might exceed 1:1.

In the end I lost patience with it. It isn’t complete at all as a season and was basically a waste of time. My rating doesn’t really reflect that because on the fundamentals it was identical to the first season and was kind of enjoyable, but the big “Not Recommended” is to be taken literally. Until a third season is out (as of now it’s not on Netflix) don’t bother with this intermediate “season.”
