Well, even after all these years, nobody else has written a review for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Special Edition Black Rebellion. I'll be the first than.
The story is actually good. It condenses the whole 25 episode series into a 2 hour time slot while just highlighting major events. It's much more organized than the two 22 minute recaps episodes that were also released, and it covers more. Stuff is definitely left out though and the story just isn't complete, even in recap form, without them. For example, the second battle Lelouch engaged in with the
terrorists against Corneila. This fight showed that Lelouch is not all powerful just because he has the geass power. That was a very important idea that was seen through the battle and without it, one of Lelouch's major turning points just isn't there. The other battles and events still show that Lelouch is not all powerful, even in the condensed state, but it doesn't have the same impact without the initial defeat being there. A lot of of the character motivations are also missing and it makes some events have less of an impact. Like the part when Suzaku goes berserk. It showed that even the rule up-holding honorary Britannia soldier had regrets from his past that affect his current state. Without this scene, his weakness is not shown until later and his struggle doesn't seem as severe. Well, even with two main events like these missing, at least it still has the same satisfying (for a 1st season) conclusion that the series had. 7/10
The art is still quite stunning , even though it's not shown as well when clips are being mashed together. 7.5/10.
Pretty much every music track used is the same as in the show. Also, the theme songs are not present. CC is also making some comments while the clips are being displayed from time to time. The music just isn't as pronounced in this recap movie though and the absence of the theme songs doesn't help at all. 7/10.
The characters also are not nearly as good because a lot of their motivations are cut out, for the most part, everyone will still screen time. So, at least their personalities are still displayed. 7/10.
I did enjoy this film, even if it wasn't as good as the series. It's not even as good as some other recap movies, like the Attack on Titan ones, for example. It is kind of stupid to make two separate recap for a series, but it allowed for pretty much every scene to be shown again minus most of the conversations and it allowed most the major character motivations and so on to be displayed again. It's a little tough to shove a 25 episode series into only a 1 hour 57 minute film, but they did a good job with Code Geass, despite some of the information that missing. I wouldn't suggest this for a refresher of the series though, unless you know you remember a good amount of the series and basically every main battle outcome. It may good as a refresher for someone who out the series on-hold for a while and is picking it back up, or for someone who took a while to watch season 2 after finishing season 1, or even for someone who just watched the series really slowly. Even with that said, I'd still recommend watching the series again if you have the time since the film is missing some key points. 7/10 for enjoyment.
