Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou

After surviving the brutal challenges of Idofront, Riko now possesses a White Whistle, allowing her to descend into the Abyss's sixth layer—The Capital of the Unreturned. Alongside Reg and Nanachi, Riko begins to explore the uncharted domain, where the ruins of the promised Golden City are located.

As the trio starts to adapt to the harsh environment, they soon encounter dangerous creatures and treacherous landscapes. Their expedition leads them to a village inhabited by strange beings known as "hollows." Despite the creeping sense of unease that welcomes them, the three venture onward to uncover the mysteries of the settlement and long-lost legacies of the forgotten adventurers who once descended into the horrors of the unexplored Abyss.

I found the first season quite boring, nothing impressive, this anime has a very strange story to the point of being complex and absurd, personally I am not very interested in that but let's say that its story is quite bad. The impressive thing about this anime in its second season is its settings and characters, a completely immersive anime with great quality and fun to watch, the way you immerse yourself in that world is impressive. And what I liked the most, well, it had cute characters and it made me feel some chills but I didn't find it that could bring out a ... feeling in me. The story doesn't feel as immersive as the settings and the characters. simply a very immersive and fun anime to watch, very well done, in the animation and interpretation, the environment and the world itself.

Mixed Feelings

I loved the first season and I definitely liked this one as well, however, I think the writing took a turn for the worse.

I think they did a good job presenting the setting, I like the design of the village, I love the whole concept of value and I love the way we learn about it, I liked Faputa as a character, I like Nanachi's development, I like Reg's as well even though I wish they explored it more and the few villagers we got to met are okay, the backstory of the village is very impactful and well made, the premise is great and ... I think they executed it well enough. Now the things that bothered me the most are:

First, Riko's character: I understand why they wanted to make her positive, at least I think so, they tried to put her in contrast of the atrocities of the abyss, a reminder that there's positive things, and that even though is hard she'll keep going until she reaches her objective, which... fair? but it makes no sense in the way they made her, we see her crying when someone close to her is hurt but then when the most horrifying thing just happened she will just smile and say, I'm just happy I get to be here and met you all, why? they can't commit to her having empathy and being affected by what's going on around her or her being extremely optimistic which could've been okay if they framed it as a coping mechanism or a personality trait that makes her inmune to the abyss atrocities.

Second, the ending: this part contains spoilers, after reg broke the barrier of the village, Faputa came in, wanting to fulfill her destiny, her quest, her task, and we understand that at that point, we know her motivations to do so, and I agreed with her when I watched it, even though it was bloody, even though we met the villagers, we understand why it has to be done, so why? why do we have to make it longer? the whole two episodes after that where unnecessary, the only thing I consider important in that time period was Faputa getting her mom's memories, but the villagers escaping, begging to not be killed, fighting Faputa and then after not too long just deciding to go to her and let themselves be eaten? we never get an explanation on why they changed their minds, other than "this is the first time she calls us" and "we always knew this would happen" which I would've bought if it wasn't for the fact that they where running for their lives and confused by Faputa's actions just some moments ago. What pisses me off the most is that they could've done that since the beginning, when Faputa brakes in they could've been afraid at first and then they could slowly remember and understand why they had to die, it would've made much more sense.

Third, the gore: I understand that is made to be impactful, shocking, painful, and in the first season I was surprised by it sure but at the same time I understood that it made sense, they want to show us how horrible and merciless the abyss is, however, I do think there is a point when is too much, specially when it's unnecessary, when it doesn't help us understand the story better of the characters, and I think this time they might've done to much, specially at the end, specially when it didn't serve the story.

Overall I think is a great story that stumbles a bit with wrapping things up and often overcomplicated itself when a simpler ending would've been better, I wish they understood how to manage Rikos character better, since everything else has more protagonism and depth, is a very complex story and sometimes they forget what the point of it is, I know I did, however it still has a lot of value and is very interesting to watch.

Drop this anime after 1st season. You're welcome.

Here's a few reasons why the second season is not worth your time (neither is this review)

1) Characters
It was frustrating how little agency the main cast had. You could pretty much leave them out and the story would play out about the same. But wait, there is a line up of brand new characters, surely these guys have awesome story to te-- nope, they are awful. If you're at the last episode of the season and can't even remember the name of the character this thing is about, yeah, that's not good, that means you just don't care. ...

2) The plot
Alright, so the plot has layers and that's good. Maybe too many layers. Some layers are downright brilliant but most of them are weird, illogical, don't make sense, or just feel like a filler. Why does it have to be so complex? Like, Ghost in Shell is less complex. Death Note has fewer exposition dumps. This show used to have such a haunting and beautifully simple premise, so I wonder how we get from swashbuckling adventure with occasional horror to this headache-inducing exposition dump marathon. You may as well just read a book.

3) Pacing
It attempts to alternate between present and past. It is a risky technique because flashbacks can hamper the momentum, but if done well, it can pay off in a satisfying aha moment - "oh wow, now it all makes sense!" kind of thing. Not here. It has one foot in presence and the other in the 150 year old past constantly, and reveals just enough to explain the last scene, or line of dialogue, which makes you clueless to the very end. To be honest, I binged it in 2 evenings, but it was my hope, my wish for it finally make at least some sense, that pushed me forward, but it made me watch it whole, so that counts I guess.

4) Worldbuilding
The worldbuilding is hands down the strongest element of "Made in Abyss" series. It strikes unique balance between soft worldbuilding and hard worldbuilding. In this season, in this level, a rigid worldbuilding element has been introduced - a principle of value, payment, balancing, what happens to those who steal or hurt others. It seemed like it was about to play a way larger role, given that this was the cornerstone of how this society worked, it was supposed to be the core theme of this entire season, but in the end it just fell flat because the morale behind it was... sorry to say it but hollow. So disappointing.

5) The weird stuff
Yeah nah, I'm not going to waste energy to try to invent euphemisms for all the creepy sh*t which is so ever-present in this series. As an author, you have million choices how to tell a story and the author picked these? idk what to say man.

TLDR; MCs in backseat, over-bloated info dumps, things happen but none of them matter and the morale of the story is far from moral, much less uplifting, inspiring or insightful in any capacity and I am most likely going to skip the future installments.

I give it a four, it has its moments.
