Synopsis

On a cold night, idol group TRIGGER reunite at a bar to celebrate the anniversary of the day they started working together. Two years prior, Ryuunosuke Tsunashi leaves his Okinawan home and heads to Tokyo, hoping to become an idol and pay off his father's debt. While waiting for the manager, he is instead picked up by Gaku Yaotome—son of Yaotome Productions' CEO and Ryuunosuke's future co-worker—and they go to meet the mysterious Ten Kujou, the last member of the group.

Gaku wants to confront Ten, as he is dubious of Ten's position as the center of the group. Fortunately, with Ryuunosuke's help, the three of them are able to hit it off, and thus TRIGGER is born. However, there still remain obstacles they have to overcome before their rise to fame.

In the present day, their rivals IDOLiSH7 also have their own set of problems. From planning what to do on their free days to resolving a long-lasting dispute, they are ready to work together and face these problems head-on.

What can I say, I love Idolish7 and especially the group known as Trigger.
That's the only reason I needed to watch this and boy it's amazing.

I wasn't sure if this was after the first season of Idolish7 ended or not.
It turns out it is both. We get some stories about Trigger and their first meeting, as well as getting a good look at how things are for the groups now.

The story didn't disappoint me, but then again, neither has anything associated with Idolish7 ever done. It lives up to my expectations and it's similar to the anime we know. This could as well be ...

As a huge fan of the IDOLISH7 franchise, I must say IDOLISH7 Vibrato was amazing. With a total of 8 episodes (According to MAL that doesn't seem to know how many episodes there are), as well as it being an exclusive Youtube Premium (At the time of the making of this review) show, it was a blast the whole way through. It may begin airing on TV, according to some rumors, but I don't know.

Please note that I am incredibly bias towards IDOLISH7 because I've been a huge fan for a while.

Story (8):

I'll cut the story some slack because IDOLISH7 Vibrato was created in ... a slice-of-life style. The first few episodes were basically dedicated to TRIGGER and how they got together. The last few episodes were dedicated to TRIGGER learning to be able to sing the "stolen" song from IDOLISH7 with a smile. These are really the only episodes that had a so called story, heck, I'd even refer to them as arcs. Everything in between, on the other hand, were styled like a slice-of-life, with not much story going on.

Art (10):

The art is amazing! One of core aspects of an idol anime is usually the art. With idol anime like Bang Dream failing with the anime's art (at least the first season), but having an amazing game, I thought IDOLISH7 would be the same. But, so far, everything that has been adapted to anime and manga format seem to be awesome. I'm sure many people were attracted to the IDOLISH7 franchise because of the art and animation.

Sound (10):

The music is really nice. The voice actors/actresses did very well as their respective characters. I loved every part of the sound. And thankfully, I didn't really get earraped by any character as I usually would in some anime. For example, Black Clo- /slapped/

Character (10):

The characters are extremely appealing. If you didn't like one character at the beginning, you most likely love them or show some kind of respect to them as a character. A notable character in Vibrato is the manager of TRIGGER, I somehow had a large hate for them, yet after watching the final episode of Vibrato, I somehow gained some respect towards them.

With all of the characters having a unique personality, you'll somehow have a hate for another personality and a love for another, but IDOLISH7 somehow makes every character appealing to the viewer, regardless of their taste. Not only that, but with Vibrato, the studios takes it to another level of love.

Enjoyment (10):

I really enjoyed IDOLISH7 Vibrato. It was a nice refresher from story based anime and provided a laugh here and there. But if you're a die-hard fan of IDOLISH7 like me, however, you'll most likely squeal at how adorable all the characters interactions are and such. I might as well warn you that if you're a die-hard fan of the characters, you have a chance of getting diabetes because of how adorable they all are.

Overall (10):

If this doesn't provide hype for the second season, I don't know what will. As you wait for IDOLISH7 2 to come, or even after IDOLISH7 2 comes out, you can watch this. It's really enjoyable to watch the characters interact and possible ships appear. I highly recommend this series for you to watch!

After watching the original IDOLiSH7 series, I wasted no time in watching this series. So, was it good? Well, let's hop on and find out!

Warning! Spoiler alert!

Story
Calling Vibrato a sequel would be inaccurate; rather, Vibrato has elements of a sequel, a prequel and interquel. The episodes of this series serve to fill in the blanks that happen between episodes. We get to see the origin of TRIGGER, the everyday life of IDOLiSH7 and we also watch as both groups prepare for a huge summer festival. Once again, IDOLiSH7 delivers excellent narrative progression, as the episodes of Vibrato feature an excellent combination of comedy, drama, music ... and even a bit of action.

One of the things I liked most of about IDOLiSH7 is how it reconstructed tropes and conventions from the musical genre. Both groups, especially TRIGGER, struggle with things like risking support from sponsors, pressure from their agency's higher-ups and even angering their fans. The musical industry is very complex, and one wrong step can have disastrous consequences, but as long as you remember what's really important, you will find a way to achieve your dreams. This is the lesson IDOLiSH7 teaches and, while it's a lesson that get repeated fairly often in several works of fiction, regardless of genre, IDOLiSH7 delivers that lesson better than most. (8/10)

Characters
IDOLiSH7 features some of the most likeable and sympathetic characters in anime history. The series is really good at making you care about the characters, whether they be from IDOLiSH7 or TRIGGER. What's curious from Vibrato is that the mentor/student dynamic from the original series is flipped around, with IDOLiSH7 succeeding at basically everything they do. It's TRIGGER that faces challenges in this series. An argument can be made that it's TRIGGER that does the dramatic heavy-lifting in Vibrato, while the titular group is just there to keep things lighthearted.

Vibrato continues the character development from the original series and we learn some interesting new things about the characters. IDOLiSH7, such as the things they do in their daily lives, Iori and Tamaki's school lives, how the members of TRIGGER first met and how the relationship between the two bands has evolved. Some character arcs are left unresolved, like Nagi's origins, Tamaki's search for his sister, why did Tenn left Riku all those years ago, and a few others, but that's probably something the second season of IDOLiSH7 will address. (9/10).

Art
If you thought the YouTube streaming would cause the visual quality to diminish, don't worry! The show remains as pretty as ever. While the show doesn't feature the CG sequences from the original series, it more than makes up for it with excellent hand-drawn animations for both daily life scenes and musical numbers. (8/10)

Sound
Maybe this could without saying, but Vibrato bring back the excellent music and incredible vocal performances from the original series. The cast and the audio engineers went out of their way to make Vibrato sound as beautiful and exciting as the original series and that deserves no shortage of praise. (8/10)

Overall
In closing here, Vibrato a fine show. It takes everything that worked from the original series and improves on it significantly. Vibrato could have worked as its own season rather than a mere spin-off but its shorter length doesn't make it any less enjoyable and anyone who loved the original series and is looking forward to the second season will definitely loved this series. (8/10)
