Tachibanakan Triangle

As Hanabi Natsuno returns home after six years in Tokyo, memories flood into her. As she prepares to start high school, she moves to Tachibanakan, the local dormitory for female students. Upon her arrival, Hanabi stumbles upon a bare naked beauty, and instantly falls head over heels for her. She also reencounters Konomi Fujiwara, her childhood friend who she barely remembers.

Hanabi is introduced to the other residence of the dorm and quickly becomes the center of attention. As the girls instantly take to the newcomer and begin shooting for her affection—subtly or obtrusively—Hanabi realizes that it is certainly going to be an interesting school year.

Story 7/10:
Tachibanakan Love-to-Lie Triangle takes place in an alternate universe where the Hojo clan triumphed over all of the others during the Sengoku period, which in turn allowed the offspring of Hojo Soun's concubines to spread across the nation in the following years, spreading the 'yuri' gene to their daughters. The story takes place in the early 18th century, showing the effects that these lesbian genes have had on the nation in it's premature industrial revolution. The men of this world at some point in history were subjugated to a caste system where they were at the bottom, forcing them to work long, hard hours ... and as a result caused the technology of Japan to advance far faster than in our own world. This is an easy to miss detail, but is reinforced by the only male characters being the plumber, and people working the stands at the festival. Our story follows six young women and their coming of age as they find the true meaning of love in this world.

Art 6/10:
Love Tachibananakan Tri-Angle uses a similar style to most shorts, utilizing the usual moe-blob visuals to appeal to those of us who like 'girls-love'. I would have liked a little more effort put into the backgrounds however, but for a short anime like this, it was pretty standard.

Sound 10/10:
Nothing about the sound effects in Tabichichan Triangle-Lie-Angle used broke my immersion, the voice acting really fit the character. I was a little sad that the cicadas didn't make their usual sound, but it is what it is. The real deal is the ending, I have a feeling that song is going to be stuck in my head for a few weeks now.

Characters 7/10:
Tabatriangle Lie-Anakan love really made good use of showing a wide range of character architypes that we see in many other anime, and then shows us how they interact in such a different world than our own. It could be seen that they are generic architypes, and while this is true, it allows us to understand said characters and better understand their place in this alternate universe's setting.

Enjoyment 9/10:
Tri-Love Tachibana's Angle had me hooked right the way through it, so much that I watched the entire show in one sitting. I really enjoyed their subtle ways of uncovering the mystery of this strange world to us, the viewer by introducing plot elements gradually, yet not at such a pace for it to become a slog to get through. It especially had me glued to the screen trying to figure out the motives of each and every character as I watched episode after episode.

Overall 7/10:
For the final score I had to look at it from an outside point of view. I gave the score I did because while I enjoyed The Triangle of Tachibanakan's Lie, I can easily see why it wouldn't be for everyone, it's the sort of show that takes a few rewatches to really uncover everything this show has to offer.

Mixed Feelings

Tachibanakan Triangle is a Studio Lings, Creators in Pack work based off of a manga by Merryhachi. I really don't know what to expect. I don't know the creator nor do I know the studios. So, let's just dive in.

Story:

The narrative is simple. Hanabi is starting High School and she moves from Tokyo back to her old home to attend school and stay at the Tachibanakan dormitory. There she meets up with an old friend, Konomi, who she doesn't recognise initially as well as the silver-haired beauty Iori and the other women at the dorm. She quickly becomes the target of both Konomi's ... & Iori's affections and shenanigans ensue.

The biggest issue with this series is that it's very pervy and a lot of the more perverted scenes focus on these first year High school girls, which is pretty uncomfortable. These girls are round about fourteen. The romance is also a bit awkward. Konomi has basically held onto feelings she's had since she was eight, which is really weird and Iori just sort of falls for Hanabi apropos of nothing. We also have a side pairing with Yuu and Sonoa, two women who have a drunken hook up and then just sort of stay together.

That being said, the comedy can hit that right level of zaniness to work pretty well at times. The series is good at using misunderstandings in such a way that the fallout can be really entertaining. The series is also pretty cutesy in spite of the ecchi elements. It's also worth noting that these episodes are only three and a half minutes long. So, it's very quick to breeze through and those elements being fairly enjoyable is pretty significant given that it goes by very quickly.

Characters:

The characters are pretty shallow. That being said, I have gone on record as saying that comedy doesn't need deep characters and I do think the cast is quirky enough that they work decently enough. Iori and Konomi competing for Hanabi does lead to both funny and cute moments and the supporting cast does get used fairly well. Save for Yuu who's basically that pervy older woman character who acts inappropriately but no one cares.

Art:

The big problem with the art is the fan-service elements. Honestly, I would have a lot less of an issue with them if the main characters were in their first year of University instead of High School since they'd be actual adults. But the fact that they're fourteen just makes it very uncomfortable. I feel like I'm going to be put on some kind of list after watching it. That being said, the character designs are decent. They look distinct and the sisters actually look like they're related. The backgrounds are pretty well put together as well and there are some visual gags that work pretty well.

Sound:

The acting is pretty well done. Nakada Arisa, Sakuragi Amisa, Tsuda Minami and the rest of the cast all deliver their lines capably. The music is okay. Nothing special, but it's fine.

Ho-yay:

We have the love triangle with Hanabi, Komori and Iori. There's also Yuu and Sonoa and Komori's sister, Yoriko, has some homo-erotic moments that usually involve hugging another girl against her ample bosom.

Areas of Improvement:

1. If you're really going to go with heavy ecchi elements, you need grown ass characters and not very young teenagers. And, honestly, them being University students would make more sense. Especially with Konomi holding on to her old feelings for Hanabi. Her feelings from six years ago.

2. The series could stand for less fan-service in general. Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of super fan-servicey stuff. I think the excessive fan-service just distracts and detracts from the story or comedy.

3. The romance could easily be better developed. I understand that the series is more comedic than romantic by design, but the things that lead up to the romances are still pretty weak.

Final Thoughts:

This one is... okay, I guess. The main elements going for it are that it does have some funny moments and it's fairly cute when it isn't focusing on fan-service. And those elements, combined with the short run time, do make it decently entertaining to watch. If you're super into fan-servicey elements you'll probably like it more unless you're also looking for a strong narrative. For me, it's barely a 6/10 and could have very easily been lower. If you have forty two minutes and you want something quick, zany and cute you might enjoy it depending on your tolerance for ecchi.

Why do yuri fans have to suffer so much?

When I was stumbling upon this year's spring anime, Tachibanakan Triangle immediaetly caught my interest. Wait a minute, is this yuri? And a comedy without any nerve-racking drama *cough cough Citrus*? And potentially ecchi? Omygosh omygosh omygosh! Can such a perfect thing even exist?

Turns out, it doesn't. Well, I thought for a long time that it does, but two weeks prior to it's start a shocking message about the length of this anime arrived; Duration: 3 min. ; Internet was once again able to break my heart... Seriously? A freaking short? *sigh*

Anywayy, now let's talk about what ... this anime really is. A disappointment. Tachibanakan Triangle is an adaptation of a 20+ chapter long manga of the same name. I have read through the manga prior to watching the anime and it's important to say that, unlike the anime, the manga is actually good at what it does. It's light-themed, has laughs and fanservice moments. Sure, it's just a stupid yuri comedy, but if you come into it expecting that, it can't really disappoint. The characters are also very likeable as a whole, even if they follow the very basic patter of personalities diversity.

Now, does the anime has any of the things I mentioned? No, it doesn't. In a fact, the anime completely abandons everything the manga tries to accomplish. The episodes are so filled up with random content that before you're able to appreciate any single scene or moment the anime already moves on, throwing more poorly animated and non-sense making things at you. The whole fanservice part is also very disappointing. The shots are pretty much the exact same as in the manga, but they lack spirit. They lack the effort. Which is the problem of the whole anime, to be completely honest.

The manga plays with it's characters and with it's environment. Sure, the things happening in there are mostly random too, but they have their purpose. You can tell that the things characters experience are somehow related. Not in the anime however. The scene selection itself makes no sense and even when it decides to adapt somehow important things, their sole purpose is nowhere to be seen. Also, relationship growth is an imporant aspect of the manga, as there is a clear love-triangle between some of the girls later on. But once again, the anime moves so quickly and unlogically that you propably wouldn't even know which of the characters are truly in love if you haven't know beforehand. The characters themselves have absolutely no chemistry, you can't even tell apart their personalities. Their sole reason for being in the show is because they just have to be there. You wouldn't want to believe that these girls are friends, students or even real people.

Be ready for the real deal, the production values. Like I already mentioned, the pace with which the anime goes at is incredibly fast, even for a short. Sure, they tried to adapt as much as they could, but I would rather see a bit less content filled anime which would make a bit more sense than what Tachibanakan decided to go with. It's hard to follow, forgettable and all episodes blend together into a huge pile of randomness.

The animation is, kind of a big deal. I actually wonder how small of a budget this anime had. If you decide to make a short instead of full series because of small ammount of funds, I would expect that the animation quality of the short would atleast be respectable. Sadly, it isn't. The arstyle itself seems very messy, and it's kinda funny how little is actually animated. Most of the scenes are either static images or 'chibi' animations.

You know what's funny about Tachibanakan Triangle? Even though it's short, poorly animated and the yuri fanservice is also disappointing, I can't bring myself to hate it. It's a show I created a bond to and I seriously wanted it to succeed. Sadly, it didn't. And even though I'm in no position to tell you what to watch and what to not, if the only thing you're looking for is yuri fanservice, go check out Sakura Trick instead. And if you're interested in Tachibanakan Triangle in particular, go read the manga. In both cases, you're gonna end up with a much better experience than this empty shell of a real anime.
