Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

Call me a nit picker but that was the worst ending to anime anime since Evangelion. The ending was reminiscent of an American rom com ending. The forced police officer was not important at all, didn't add humor, and didn't create tension, which was the whole point. The letter was fucking bullshit. Not only did it appear out of nowhere, but the Mayan calender reference was just a stupid idea. The bicycle scene was ridiculous. While we don't know where Rikka's mom lives, we can assume that he was riding for over 10 miles. If the distance between them was so small, then why did ... Yuuta need to go visit her when he could have taken a train the next day? How did a 14 year old skinny Japanese boy drive a bicycle 10+ miles? Why did he scream at the top of his lungs when she obviously would hear him? Why did the police officer continue to chase them at the end? Why did the grandpa feel so threatened by Yuuta after Yuuta and Rikka embraced? Why did Dekomori bring everyone to Rikkas house, really? Did Deko want to see Rikka so much? If that was the case why didn't she offer to take Yuuta? Why did the mexican have to become a molester? How did he out run a police officer?

As you can see, it is a accumulation of these little ideas that are just bad. Together, they bring down an otherwise average ending.

This anime is an extremely cute, perhaps too cute (in a good way), well-done slice of life anime about an eccentric cute girl told through the eyes of our protagonist [insert a stock slice of life protagonist here]. My involvements with the slice of life genre are Clannad, Anohana, Haruhi, Kimi no Na wa, and K-On! And, I can tell you with full certainty that this series is strictly worse than all of those. I know my experience in the genre skews my view on this series, but I'd have to call it below average. The main character Rikka is the only redeemable factor of ... the anime and she does an outstanding job at carrying the entire series on her shoulders, but there's only so much a single character can do. The plot is lackluster and every other character is as forgettable as the title. The visuals are amazing though. Watch one or two episodes and if you fall in love with Rikka as I did, keep watching it. Otherwise, go watch something better.

An anime that I thought could take advantage of the argument it addresses, but unfortunately it doesn't. I don't think it's a bad anime if we treat it as fantasy. But categorizing it as Slice of Life seems totally wrong to me, because although it is true that there are people who do not live in reality and create their own world, this is totally out of hand. Enough to diagnose that all the main characters (except Yuuka's friend, and until then he just complies) need psychological assistance.
If this anime were categorized only as fantasy, and removing the Slice of Life I ... think it would be better, because even if it makes use of real things, in life you do not see boys with complexes of delusions and fantasies fleeing from the police.

Phrases like "we all have the syndrome" are very cliché and without sincerely disappoint on the part of Kyoto Animation. And I say this because it seeks to give too much depth to a subject that is not worth it. I am not against having imagination and letting it flow, but being children, it is common. And if you are going to be a writer it is necessary.

But the real and the imaginary world are two different things, not because one writes medieval books does it mean that one lives as a person of the 13th century.

For which I did not like this anime because I seek to give it a very misguided depth and without head or tail. It would have been better to see how the characters "matured" and realized what reality really is. And not necessarily leave their imaginary games aside, but now they are truly aware that this lifestyle will not allow you to overcome or face the problems of this life. There if I would categorize it as a Slice of Life.

Un anime que pensé que podría aprovechar el argumento que aborda, pero que lamentablemente no lo logra. No creo que sea un mal anime si lo tratáramos de fantasía. Pero categorizarlo como Slice of Life me parece totalmente incorrecto, porque aunque es verdad que hayan personas que no viven en la realidad y crean su propio mundo, esto se va totalmente de las manos. Lo suficiente como para diagnosticar que todos los personajes principales (menos el amigo de yuuka, y hasta ahí nomas cumple) les hace falta asistencia psicológica.
Si este anime fuera categorizado solo como fantasía, y quitando el Slice of Life creo que quedaría mejor, porque aunque haga uso de cosas reales, en la vida no ves chicos con complejos de delirios y fantasías huyendo de policías.

frases como "todos tenemos el síndrome" es muy cliché y sin sinceramente decepciónate de parte de Kyoto Animation. Y esto lo digo porque busca darle demasiada profundidad a un tema que no lo vale. No estoy en contra de tener imaginacion y dejarla fluir, mas siendo niños, es comun. Y si vas a ser escritor es algo necesario.

Pero son dos cosas distintas el mundo real y el imaginario, no porque uno escriba libros medievales significa que viva como una persona del siglo 13.

Por lo cual este anime no me gusto porque busco darle una profundidad muy mal guiada y sin pies ni cabeza. Hubiera sido mejor ver como iban "madurando" los personajes y fueron dandose cuenta de cual es verdaderamente la realidad. Y no necesariamente dejar sus juegos imaginarios de lado, sino que ahora son verdaderamente concientes que ese estilo de vida no te va a permitir superar o afrontar los problemas de esta vida. Ahi si lo categorizaria como un Slice of Life.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*- I will warn you where the spoilers are ;)

If you have a dry sense of humor, you will love this show. I'm going to be straight up and upfront about this. I believe that this Anime was HORRIBLE, words alone cannot describe how bad this anime was to watch. To begin… The characters. It starts off with a girl (Rikka Takanashi) who is clearly suffering from “eighth-grade syndrome” (check the wiki), and is painted to be a “ditzy, cute and adorable character (Like it has never been done before). ... The humor (in my opinion) is horrible, it's just a guy hitting a girl on her head after some “stupid” thing she did or him literally just giving a “funny reaction” to some very “funny” and “outrages” thing she did previous to his reaction. Following this, there is another character. Could you believe it? Yet another girl (Sanae Dekomori) who suffers from eight-grade syndrome (Like it has never been done before). This time, she’s even more annoying. The most memorable thing about her was her swinging her ponytails around and that’s it. The main character (Togashi Yuuta) is just a basic character, all he does is put them in their place and complains about everything that anybody does.

SPOILER PART- Stop reading if you haven’t finished the show.
There was one part of the show that stands out from every other ditzy funny ha-ha anime ever and then they decided to ruin it. To elaborate, the guy from the very beginning is attempting to make the main girl turn back to “normal” and he succeeds at one point. Then he realizes that she isn’t happy at all. This part is one very redeeming part about the show, and then they ruin it. Yes, it is evident that the reason she acts the way she does is that it is a coping mechanism. But if you’re going to do something then stick through with it. Anyways, believe it or not, he doesn’t stick through with it at all, He simply just lets her turn back into the person she once was, and all the plot, character development, and actions in which he did to turn her back to “normal” all just disappears. The show literally restarts from the beginning again.

Aside from the show being extremely boring (AcesW's, NickyNick20066's, and my opinion), the art was mediocre along with the sound.

In conclusion, this show was extremely annoying and boring, and they managed to redeem the show at one point and then completely ruin it again. Thanks for reading my review and remember. This is simply an opinion.

One of Kyoto Animation's weakest hours was dabbling in this franchise.

A studio will eventually slump, and that's to be expected. But when you slump, and accidentally find a new audience that is damaging to your core ideals, you're in trouble.

Chuunibyou is what you'd call a light-hearted slice of life rom/com with a twist of eccentricity. Unfortunately, it's not a sufficiently off-the-wall enough comedy to excuse its shallow and inauthentic characters, which, dare I say it, pander to a mainstream audience previously outside of Kyoto Animation's grasp, and are in direct conflict with Kyoto Animation's pre-established specialty.

When your first episode with real character development and as ... much as a single authentic moment of detectable awareness for one of your main characters turns out to be the very last episode, you have missed the mark in your main genre, which believe it or not, is supposed to be slice of life.

If you like Chuunibyou, it will be off the back of its cringe-comedy and/or approachable mainstream art direction, and not at all on its slice-of-life leanings, at which it fails miserably.

As it turned out, Chuunibyou was the beginning of a longish decent into money-fueled grab-missions with its artistic aspirations put completely on hold for Kyoto Animation, and, as of writing this it has still not ended completely. Although Hibike! Euphonium had its redeeming qualities.

Chuunibyou is a serviceable cringe-comedy, if you're into that particular sub-genre of comedy, and not much else. Whether you love it or hate it, my best advice is to stay clear of the sequel.

THE STAFF
- Animated by Kyoto Animation, meaning very good production values around very typical stuff like SCHOOLS-MOE-AND CUTE STUFF BECAUSE THAT IS THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO.
- Directed by Ishihara Tatsuya, the one who pretty much did every major show of KyoAni. This guy knows well what emotional buttons to press.
- Based on light novels, so don’t expect much of a plot.

PROPER MINDSET
This is a school comedy around people with illusions of grandeur. I had no idea there was a term for children with vivid imaginations, even when I used to be one myself. I remember mixing my mother’s perfumes with shampoos trying to ... create some super magic potion like a mad scientist. Or using a back alley as my base, where I was creating armadas of spaceships out of dried up clay mud holes and controlling the galaxy. Man, this eighth-grade syndrome is one heck of an embarrassment when you finally get over it (or mocked by others for doing it). Anyways, the show basically has a running joke around how stupid it looks when you try to play it cool and special when you are otherwise a completely normal person.

SCRIPT
Other than that, ok, it’s a goofy moe school comedy with lots of cute girls doing silly things, and nothing more. Don’t expect much of a plot; it basically has two sentences worth of it. And of course don’t expect to take itself seriously or to even attempt to be cathartic, like in the case of Welcome to the NHK. This is made by the kings of escapism shows, remember? To the most part it’s just the random delusions of everyday people and the only goal they have is to make you laugh.

The truth is, towards the end it becomes far more dramatic as it tries to flesh out some of its characters; something it didn’t up to that time, as everybody was just a comical caricature that was defined by a single quirk. Also, in the typical style of Kyo Ani, it feels like a harem in its early stages. Or perhaps you didn’t notice how the cast is made up of one typical blunt dork protagonist, a dozen typically cute girls surrounding him in ways that feel like they dig him, and a minor male student who is there only to address the horny side of the protagonist? Like all best buddies do in anime.

Anyways, the change in the mood in the final episodes is VERY sloppy and fails to be significant in any way. The show still needs to be funny, the finale doesn’t exactly offer any major changes or even closure, and the characters never become more than what they began as. In fact, the last episode feels more like they reset their progress back to zero because DUH escapism shows need to maintain the status quo. So what was the point in trying to make them more dramatic in the first place? Strong last impressions instead of a lukewarm open ending; that’s all.

CAST
The characters are, as I said earlier, defined by a single and simple personality quirk, thus they never feel complicating or realistic. They all follow the exact same pattern of having some sort of delusion and abiding to it like it’s a religion. Some of them are trying to keep away from their delusions, as they feel very ashamed of doing them in the first place. That is supposed to make them somewhat self-aware and down to earth but even that means absolutely nothing, since the setting is equally unrealistic as they are. If you notice how everybody else around them reacts, you will realize THEY DON’T CARE! I mean, really, the main characters constantly do all sorts of crazy stuff and absolutely nobody in their families or schoolmates seems to laugh or shake their heads in contempt. They just look puzzled for a few seconds before going back to whatever they were doing and completely forgetting the whole thing. There is no reason to feel embarrassed if nobody cares; thus even the very theme of the show is there just for laughs. It has no depth and is barely looked into.

I am not fond of the generic looks and behaviors everybody has, or how they add silly eye-patches and long pigtails just for the sake of comedy. But at least they serve as part of the illusion of grandeur every girl has. Said illusions are very funny and elaborate, presenting it like a silly spar is in their minds an epic battle for the salvation of the universe or something; making them easily memorable as eccentric caricatures. But surely not as characters; since they lack depth and development.

PRODUCTION VALUES
Context aside, the show is made with lots of care. The direction is close to flawless, as you never feel like the flow of the scenes is too slow or too fast. Everything lasts exactly as much as it needs and it is usually accompanied by lots of silly jokes. The production values are amazing when it comes to smooth motions and slapstick. The characters talk appropriately for their roles and they never feel like they drag in whatever they do or say. The soundtrack is nothing special but at least feels perky and energetic as it should be in such a show.

LEGACY
There is no way to tell how long can a running joke and moe-moe keep you interested. I personally lost interest in 3 episodes since I am no fan of the style or the lack of a plot. I understand that the show is making fun of how most otakus feel like they are airheads or too weird for the rest of the “normals” and that many will try to eventually appear normal to their society if they want to get a job or marry easier. It builds familiarity with the audience by dealing with a subject most fans experience all the time. I liked how it follows a theme but not how it doesn’t do anything with it. Just like all Kyo Ani shows, it’s a nice time-spender but nothing exceptional or that memorable outside its emotional manipulation gimmicks.

One of the cringiest anime to exist. I watched three episodes because i thought as it went on it would get a little better, but it did not. The MC boy has a past of this non sense and decides that in high school he will be a normal student. But then a girl who lives above him gets into his life. THIS is the part that gets me... All he had to do was stay away from here, and when the teacher first asked him to take her home he could have simply said no, like most people would. He continues to do this, ... and he says to himself and to her to stay away from him but he eventually breaks. Very very annoying MC girl who is crazy.

I'm autistic. I've come a long way since I was young. Oftentimes autistic people prefer fantasy over reality. When I was in the 4th grade, I got into Yu-Gi-Oh. Unlike most normal kids, I still couldn't distinguish fantasy from reality. I truly believed that characters in cartoons were real people. I fell in love with the little Yugi. No, this wasn't some childish crush. It was basically a hardcore obsession. I raved on and on and on about how I'd marry Yugi and cuddle with him and kiss him and have kids with him and all that dumb stuff. Yeah, stuff like this is normal ... with kids in kindergarten or something, always delving into make believe stuff. But I was in the 4th grade then, and I didn't realize back then that cartoons were just drawings on paper made to move with high rez technology. I think my obsession set in motion some bullying I had to endure later on, but I don't remember as I haven't run into anyone who knew me back in the 4th grade. I didn't get out of this phase until the 6th grade. Yeah, personally I'd love to bury those memories under six feet of dirt, as they're so embarrassing to look back on (and I don't think I understood that what I was doing back then was embarrassing). Everybody has embarrassing memories they wish they could bury six feet under dirt. Everybody has a time where they pretended to be something so intensely that they believed they were some fictional character for some reason. Something like this is usually common among little kids or the mentally disabled. But...in this anime, middle/high schoolers, who should CLEARLY know better, bring this up to such extraordinary and ridiculous levels, it's not even funny. Why does this thing exist?!

Okay. Forgive me for sounding rude and blunt, which I don't mean to be, and I'm not trying to look down on fans or people who actually used to pretend to be fantasy characters when they were young. I understand this is fiction, and I'm not trying to sound like I take this a little too personally. However, there is SO MUCH wrong with this anime it's not even funny. I'm surprised other people haven't pointed these things out yet, so I'm going to no matter what people say to me! Let me start off with the single worst thing about this show: the way it portrays these fantasies. Now, it's not uncommon for people to pretend to be anime characters or something like that. Heck, sometimes I like to pretend I'm Dilandau from Escaflowne or Usagi from Sailor Moon. Heck, when me and my friends were young, we would pretend to be Pokemon trainers and play pretend battles back when we had recess in elementary school! Of course, that was mostly because I'm autistic and because we were young kids back then who wanted to have fun instead of deal with boring stuff like school or homework. Plus, we actually knew when to be lost in our fantasies and when we had to deal with reality, even though we didn't want to deal with the latter. But our main character, Yuuta, a perfectly normal and NOT physically or mentally flawed high schooler AT ALL, suddenly decided he was some Dark Flame Master and completely took on this persona. In middle school. And acted like that. IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. EVEN DURING CLASSES. IN PUBLIC!! Do you see what's wrong here? It's one thing to be a little kid and pretend to be anime characters when we're alone, but...a middle schooler?! Acting like that every single day?! In plain view of other kids, teachers, and authority figures?! Seriously, this kid SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER!! So should everyone else, despite having their reasons for deluding themselves in fantasies! Yet what does this anime do?! It tries to give it some fancy name called Eighth Grader Syndrome, or Chuunibyo as they call it. Come on people!! This isn't some phenomenon! It's just stupid kids acting out their fantasies and acting like complete idiots when they SHOULD know better! What also appalls me is the way other people react to them! They just watch looking all weird and let them do their thing! It's probably more of a cultural thing, and I'm in America so Japan probably has a different view on this than Americans, but...seriously, if someone did stuff like this in real life, they'd be bullied relentlessly and be reminded of it for the rest of their lives, possibly to the point of making them commit suicide! I'm surprised the kids who saw Yuuta's Dark Flame Master gig didn't laugh at him or bully him or record videos of it and put it on YouTube so they could ruin his life completely!! I know that if I ever did that stuff in public, it'd most certainly happen to me since I'm not the most popular person in school! We all know what happened to Tyler Clementi here! Seriously, Yuuta should have known better than to do embarrassing stuff like that in public all the time!! Just the way the show portrays all of this as if it's the most normal thing in the world by making light of it and using it for comedy...how can any sane person even approve of such atrocities?!

Well, if there is one thing the show does well, it's the fact that it DOES show characters who DO feel embarrassed by their past selves and flinch whenever they even run into someone they knew from those days, and that's how the show starts. Yuuta, ashamed by how audacious and retarded he acted back in middle school, even by his standards, manages to go to a new school and hopes to start anew...but then he meets some random girl named Rikka who is so lost in fantasy it's not even funny. Even Yuuta agrees with me. But unlike him, Rikka only does it outside of school (smart move!). But her antics drive Yuuta up the wall and he wants nothing to do with her. He tries to get her off his back, but she keeps on coming back no matter what despite actually telling her multiple times to back off and leave him alone. However, Rikka makes him join her "society", along with a bunch of other people including a personal friend of hers, and form some stupid and pointless club whose name is so stupid I can't even remember it. Only two of said members are lost in their fantasies, Rikka and her friend, while Yuuta and three others, Shinka, Kumin, and Isshiki, just go along with their antics without really caring much except for Yuuta and Shinka. But soon, Yuuta starts to discover the real reason behind Rikka's yearning to be lost in her fantasies, especially when her older sister, Touka, also refuses to get off his back.

Let me get the other ridiculously bad part out of the way: the characters. Other than Yuuta, Shinka, and later Rikka, all of the characters, even some of the adults who aren't directly involved with Rikka's life, act like such retards it's not even funny! I especially couldn't stand Rikka's ridiculously pig-tailed friend Dekomori and her constant emphasis on "DESu! DESu! DESu!" all the time! Every time she said a word I seriously wanted to duct tape her mouth shut! Isshiki's nothing but a girl chasing cheapskate (though admittedly he DOES actually decide to go after one single girl later), and Kumin...oh God. She has to be the single most stupid and annoyingly bland character in the ENTIRE cast. Why? All she likes to do is sleep and act forcedly cute with her squeaky voice! That's it! And even in the end she acts stupid but for a different reason entirely! The only characters in this show who actually have their brains even remotely in tact are Yuuta, Shinka, and members of Rikka's family, and the former two only act normal AFTER they get over their silly fantasies! I actually applaud Yuuta for being strong-minded and saying what's on his mind, not being totally bland and indecisive even though he gets dragged into stupid stuff against his will. At least he MAKES IT CLEAR that he hates what he's being dragged into. Yeah, he's loud, brash, selfish, insensitive and does treat Rikka badly in the beginning, but in this case, I'd find it rather justified, as no normal person acts the way she (or he did when he was young) does in real life! I hated every interaction between them, especially the time where Yuuta shaves Isshiki's head with very pointless and melodramatic screaming and crying, and when Shinka and Dekomori fought like cats and dogs. Now, one reviewer I read about was disappointed by Touka blackmailing/threatening Yuuta into helping her fix her problems with her sister instead of doing it herself. I don't think this is the case. Maybe she DID try to help Rikka out offscreen but her attempts didn't work no matter what, so she decided to go the extra mile. That's how I think of it. But that's pretty much it.

It may be KyoAni and all, but I'm going to be upfront: their animation here looks really sloppy. Tamako Market looked better than this. The music is rather bland, the theme songs were annoying, and the insert songs were used in the wrong places. Ugh. Now, the only reason I watched this show was because of one reviewer's interpretation of it, and how the final episode shows a strong moral about being true to yourself, embracing the weirdness within, and not being happy with conforming because other people say so. Now, these are themes that I love to see explored in anime. Heck, right now, I'm in a situation where I do do things people think as strange, but I do them in moderation and I do them to be happy, not to cause anyone trouble. Why else would we watch anime and read books and play video games than to take a break from the tiresome world around us? We want to have fun, and in a way, I understand why the characters in here do the things they do. My sister and I don't really see eye to eye since we have very different views on the world and we clash a lot. I'm convinced that because of my disability, she believes I'm someone who will throw a tantrum if I even remotely do anything she deems rude and inappropriate, like accidentally say the wrong thing, and who she has to watch over every single second like I'm that kid from the movie Problem Child (y'know, the one with Gilbert Gottfried). I may have a disability, but I KNOW what to do when I'm out in public. I know how to be polite and say thank you and be appreciative and when to do something and when not to. I know all of this, yet she seems to believe that I don't and constantly reminds me of how stupid I am and seems to believe that anything I say or do, well intentioned or not, is always rude or out of malice. I don't show her the anime I watch because I'm convince she'll question my motives for watching them and completely get the wrong ideas about said shows, and I LOATHE being misunderstood more than anything. I bring this thing with my sister up because later in the show, Rikka and Touka get into a similar situation which I think IS rather understandable, and even justifiable to a degree, but I won't go further for the sake of spoilers. Sure, we all love a little fun and games once in a while, especially if it's to unwind after a hard day at work or find happiness after a really bad day. I used to be bullied in school, yet anime and manga have saved me from doing stuff like doing drugs and cutting myself. I don't mind pretending I'm in my safe little fantasy world and being lost in it for a short while when I'm alone, and I know when to keep it in moderation. But...if it's taken to this extent, then it's just plain annoying and insulting.

Now, I'm NOT trying to start any backlash or flame wars or anything. I'm not trying to bash the disabled or the mentally ill or anyone like that. I'm not even trying to imply that the characters in the show are disabled or mentally not right in the head. Why would I do that when I myself have a disability? That's the last thing I'd ever do, and I'm not that kind of person, especially since I explained why I don't like this show, and I'm not trying to make it sound like I still can't distinguish fantasy from reality. I know better than that, even though I do let my emotions get the better of me sometimes, not that I mean to. We all have our strange sides here and there, and we should do what makes us happy, even though society claims it's not normal and that we should act the way they want us to act, which is basically to obey everything they say, even though it feels more like they want to put us in a box because we're flawed. So what if we want to burst out and be ourselves? That's what people should do! Be themselves! Don't hold back! Do whatever makes you happy, and don't be what others want you to be just so they can feel good about themselves. Don't be poisoned by the selfish wishes of others. I love being myself. We should embrace our weirdness and enjoy it, no matter how hard people try to drag us down. But this anime approaches it in such an insulting manner it's not even funny. I KNOW for a fact that if I wanted to write a story about an anime about being true to yourself if it makes you happy despite the opinions of others, I'd be able to execute it better than this! It's one thing to actually have people who pretend and play act for fun, and then there's having people do it ALL THE FREAKING TIME AND IN PUBLIC IN FRONT OF OTHERS, and the latter is just plain wrong on so many ridiculous levels.

This is fine for entertainment, but if you really want an anime about being true to yourself, stay far away from this. This has ridiculous written all over it. Sorry if I sounded too personal. Just throwing my opinion out there. That's all.

EDIT: It seems I've caused some confusion in regards to the message my review has been giving out. It seems people have mis-interpreted my review as hating the show for not being realistic even though it's just a cartoon. I GET that it's a cartoon and I DO NOT hate the show for not being realistic. Did anyone even read my review word for word? I don't judge shows for realism. That's not why cartoons exist. Heck, if you look at my top 3 shows, they're anything but realistic! I despise Chuunibyou simply because I hate the insulting and downright comically insensitive way it portrays kids having vivid imaginations and taking them to a ridiculous extreme, even going as far as not having people laugh or shake their heads in contempt. Is that really so hard to understand?

I generally enjoy KyoAni a lot, but one thing about this show just got to be too much: Yuuta resolves far too many of his own issues by hitting Rikka, repeatedly. yes, i know, it's just supposed to be silly and possibly cute. a random chop here & there is one thing; this is repeated, over and over. no idea why anyone thinks that kind of thing is fun or cute. it's gross, unncessary, and ruined this anime for me.

mal demands a longer review, but i've said all that i have to say about this. pretty stupid. but i'm used to mal having certain pointless ... rules.
