I wouldn't usually write a review for an ecchi/hentai/harem/porn/incest/whydon'tyoujustjackoffalready?-anime, but people are being driven crazy by this thing, it's already got a score of 7.99(at least when I wrote this) and this OVA basically is what they don't get to jack off to--I mean watch in the regular To Love Ru Darkness season, I mean, I get it, the show is good at getting your dick hard, good, and it can also make you have some giggles and good fun on the process? Great! But is it really a 10/10 show? No, it isn't.
And if there is anyone who dares to say that is the
best anime they've ever watched, is because they probably mean it's the best porn they've ever watched, ask them to justify why it is the pinnacle of anime, and you'll see the awnser will be along the lines of "Can't you see how brave this characters are? They dare to have a guy touch them when he is already semi-kind of engaged! Not in this world man", "The art is soooo good! Have you seen the way those watermelons dance?", "I came 3 times that day", "My penis pretty much typed this review". And why? Why is it that all the people making reviews are getting so crazy about it? Well, that's because this is porn, what where they looking for when they watched this? Porn. The simple fact that they are looking at anime as a pure masturbation mean, makes them lose their criticism and can only say wonderfull things about it.
Now, I'm gonna stop being a dick to all those people who are controlled by their sexual lust and are not able to be critical about anime because of this reason.
Story (6): The story is not amazing, in Love-Ru we start of with the usual girl who falls in love with the main character and then they have a problem, and they have to fix it, they are given time, in that time more females are introduced, they all fall in love with the main character eventually, the problem comes back, and with enough -falling on their panties- moments, the problems comes back once again, and then it can either leave and come back later or end the problem and start something new. To Love-Ru is pretty much this, probably the only thing I've enjoyed in this new "lets create a Harem" deal, is the fact that Momo tries to get into Rito's mind and make him into a perverted playboy, wich adds somekind of psychological control, wich is a nice touch and I can appreciate it. I'd also like to add that Darkness probably beats the other To Love-Ru arcs, just for the fact that this might actually go somewhere, the character development is minimum but there is some of it...I think.
Art (9): I don't really care that much about art to be sincere, cause I believe a lot of people tend to ignore other animes just for the fact that the art style is strange or different to their usually anime, so I don't think the art makes the anime, but it can obviously be appreciated mostly in a show where the way characters look is so important. Darkness has a pretty solid art style and has a nice look to it.
Sound (7): I've never really liked the music themes in the To Love-Ru franchise, but I guess there might be someone out there who enjoys them, but is nothing I would consider memorable or outstanding, the sound effects in the show are good in setting the atmosphere, maybe not the greatest, but good.
Character (6): Well, maybe the part where most of the people might disagree with me, a lot of people can only say that the cast of characters is great, that they are all deep and amazing, original and well thought...this is one of those harem shows where the show is trying to make you pick wich girl you like the most, there's nothing new to them, you can find them on other harem shows, where they try to introduce as many female personalities as possible (wich I wouldn't say is always bad -Kotegawa best girl) , the shy, the dumb, the responsible, the perverted, the athletic and then there's the one that's in love and the one that just wants some action under the sheets. Despite what must people may say, I think the characters don't have that much to them, they don't really seem to have motives in their lifes, they are always in the same mood until something happens to them, they don't really seem to be troubled with their every day problems, their personality just blends into the situation.
Overall (6): But overall, I enjoy the show, not because of the plot, not because of the music, just because it has some ok comedy and is good at getting my dick hard, I can't deny that. In the ecchi category I could even consider that it stands out from the others, but if I'm really critical about it and look at it as anime as a whole, is not that incredible, the plot is ok, sound and art are nothing life changing, but is enjoyable. An overall 6 in my eyes.
Probably the CLOSEST to BORDERLINE HENTAI, i have EVER SEEN!
and believe it or not, i did compare the amount of nudity and nipple slip in kiss x sis to this.
Results i got:
comapring all the nippls, panty's,etc.. in kiss x sis, it was 1/3 of the amount of nipples in this OVA.
and comparing the ecchi Levels of kiss x sis to to Love ru Darkness OVA, in 1 OVA that lasted less that 30mins, the was 3 times the amount of ecchi you would see in the kiss x sis franchise all together. and not to mention the situations that arose, were beyond what i thought
could be passed as borderline hentai.. i probably cant even call it Borderlined because a Border just is to, welll... it just isnt able to describe how narrow the margin is between hentai and this OVA. i would use this phrase to describe it the border between hentai and this ova was bent back to the point where the it would be hard to prove that it is not hentai but ecchi, i mean i wont spoil anything important but the bathroom scene was pretty out-there.. i would even say the creators had 1 leg over the border at a time in that scene.
but that is my limit to what i am going to expose.
Watch it, if you need any more clarity!
but before i got some advise:
make sure you have these:
Parentless/moraless place to watch it in
a mind Open to ridiculous Situation..as is the case with mot if not all the To Love Ru series'
The waiting period between the OVA episodes were so unbearably long!!! I'll be completely honest, I am in love with the To LOVE-Ru Darkness portion of the series. I love Momo's "Harem Plan" she is trying to fulfill for Rito. Watch these OVAs as a part of the TV series and not just "extra" episodes.
Note : My score represents the To LOVE-Ru Darkness series as a whole.
Story (8) To LOVE-Ru Darkness strays its focus from Lala and Haruna towards Momo, Mea, and Konjiki no Yami (Golden Darkness). It is wrapped around Momo's plan to get all of the heroines to be with Rito, ALL AT
THE SAME TIME...!!! How lucky is Rito to attract all of these beautiful girls just by acting himself? All I can say is..."I wish I was him!" Momo makes an appearance in basically every single episode where she tries to come up with a plan for her harem plan to be successful. All of the events tie back into her master plan. In a nutshell, what I want to say is that there is more to this anime than it just being your typical ecchi harem series.
Art (11) Yes, I just rated it an 11/10. I absolutely love the animation! Kentaro Yabuki's character illustrations are just so aesthetically pleasing. All the characters are beautiful and have their own charms. He has actually inspired me to start drawing (look on my profile for some of my works).
Sound (9) Does anybody else love the opening of To LOVE-Ru Darkness? "Saikou no yume wo isshou ni mimashou" from the opening of the anime translates to "let's watch the best dream(s) together." Just from the opening song, I get a sense of just how beautiful this show really is. Aside from the opening song, I enjoyed the mix of heavy breathing and screams from the heroines ;).
Characters (10) Darkness mainly revolves around the interactions between Rito and Yami, Mea, and Momo. If you are a fan of either Lala or Haruna, then you probably didn't enjoy Darkness as much as the first two seasons. Momo is one of my favorite characters of anime, period. Not many girls are willing to lead a harem plan for the guy they love. I love how every single heroine expresses their love for Rito in their own unique way!
Enjoyment (10) I do enjoy the ecchi genre, and To LOVE-Ru is at the pinnacle of it. When I think of ecchi, I think of To LOVE-Ru. Be prepared with a box of tissues (I know what you guys were thinking...Not for fapping! But for the nosebleeds that you will get from the extreme ecchi scenes in the series).
Overall (10) If you are looking for an ecchi anime, then by all means watch To LOVE-Ru Darkness. If you are looking for an ecchi anime with an actual story, then PLEASE watch To LOVE-Ru Darkness.
Uh oh, we're in trouble! or maybe it's just Rito who is in trouble because he once again attempts to confess to his crush but ends up delivering a confession to everyone else instead! Talk about being clumsy but that's Rito to you.
*Flashes back to present time*
To LOVE-Ru Darkness OVA (also known as To LOVE-Ru Trouble Darkness OVA) is a special episode that debuted in hot summer of August consisting of three short episodes featuring Momo, Mikan and Haruna. Unlike the previous OVA or series, Momo takes the main role as well as narration of this special short episode.
Eventually though, the three featured characters all play their roles in this episode with mixed results.
And of course, misunderstandings leads to strange and mixed feelings among the group of girls - Momo, Nana, Lala, Haruna, Yui, and even maybe a little of Golden Darkness. But that's just one third of the whole deal. You see, this special episode consists of three separate parts. Count them, not one, two but three.
That means more fun with the girls and Rito with even a little of Mikan in the mix. As a matter of fact, Kana Hanazawa plays her role brilliantly in this special episode as she brings out the shy mannerism with her talent mixed in with some "lust". Rito is in trouble and so is Mikan.
Last but certainly not least is Haruna in the story. She is the girl Rito has been keeping tabs on since day one of the series and those feelings has still been active. Like a cute cat/neko, she remains her cute self especially when she gets cuddled. Later on though, it's not what it seems. Yes Rito, you're once again in trouble.
Overall, it is no surprise that this OVA contains a lot of ecchi, fan-service, and drama. Saki Hasemi (the original creator of To-Love Ru) is known to bring forth cliches, gags, and fan-service in his original series. Additionally, Xebec presents this episode uncensored to fans who despises the censorship of "light, mist, and darkness" that hides the ecchi of the To-Love Ru franchise as much as Yui despises aggressive men. In the second OVA episode, the fan-service shoots off the charts with full uncensored nudity. And of course, that shouldn't be surprising with today's anime industry. The way this OVA episodes presents them was just that typical To Love Ru style.
The sound and art of this special episode remains indifferent. It seems be just there from the beginning till the very end. The ending sequences revisits some of the more memorable scenes of this episode and presents it like a powerpoint presentation. However, it does present some emotional drama especially at the beginning. From there, it turns into "ecchi" music and later comedy. Oh boy Rito, you lucky bastard.
This special episode is by all means not special. It has fan-service, gags, cliches, and very predictable. Rito stars as the main male protagonist in this once again. He is the kid that wants to help others but always ends up doing it in a compromising way. But that's To-Love Ru to you, or rather darkness. Speaking of which, this is perhaps the trailer of the full series. With Momo taking the role of a more active member of the To Love Ru franchise, expect to see more of her as she will be bringing out the "carnivore" out of Rito bringing more trouble.
Trouble is brewing but that's just the beginning. Life is not always so simple after all, especially since living with outer space beings is the last normal thing you can think of out of your normal life...
