Yeah, after procrastinating Azumanga Daioh for years, I've finally had the chance to sit down and watch it. The entire cast is great, but for a favorite, I enjoy any time Chiyo's on screen, as for some reason she's a bullying magnet, and seeing her reactions and everybody else's reactions to her reactions is hilarious. I didn't think much of her at first, but after seeing her used as walking advertisement for the class café, and then her trying to decide which of her friends best fits the description "idiot" for the athletics festival really sold me on her character.

The firing squad was actually a mock execution. It was a cruel prank pulled by Tsar Nicholas 3rd. He just wanted to put the fear of god into political dissidents before sending them to the labor camp. Also perhaps instill a sense of gratitude that they were "mercifully" spared execution.

We're already friends on Goodreads, I just don't interact with people much on there. My name there is Ian.

I just finished "To the Lighthouse" today. I work about 45-50 minutes away from my house, so I spend a lot of time driving. I love to listen to free audio books on Youtube. Last week my book was "Hunger" by Knut Hamsun. While I loved Lighthouse, I wasn't overly fond of Hunger. As you'll notice, my goodreads has a lot of random and mostly awful Western comics because I belong to a weekly comic book club with some offline buddies. I've now read 400 books, but it's padded by plenty of shit.

House of the Dead was great! Although it's different from Dostoevsky's other novels. It's far more autobiographical and deals with the cruelty of the Siberian labor system. The main character is clearly based on Dostoevsky himself and many of the prisoners are just exaggerated versions of real people Dostoevsky met during his exile period. Interestingly, it is the only Dostoevsky work that Tolstoy liked. Those 2 famously disliked one another's work! You can also see a strong parallel between House of the Dead and Solzhenitsyn's novel "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" which was written nearly 100 years later. Despite changing political systems, much of Russia didn't change. The autocracy, cruel labor camps, secret police, and ruthless crack down on dissidents was consistently bad throughout the Tsarist period and continued into the Communist period. Even today, Russia struggles with an abusive and autocratic government.

Sadly I don't. I messed around with a computer chess game in college, but I never learned anything about chess theory or actually put in the time to get good. I recently read a fun novella about chess though called "The Royal Game" by Stefan Zweig. Since you're a big fan of Dostoevsky, I should mention that a few months ago I finally got around to reading House of the Dead and White Nights. I had never read those before and had put them off for a long time to read other stuff!

I used to know a guy on MAL who loved chess and actually had a Fide ranking. Sadly, he slowly fell out of anime and decided to close his MAL account. I wish I had asked his Discord info because I enjoyed talking to him. He was a Russian dude who was my age and lived in Yekaterinburg.

I don't even know where to begin with that to be honest. I guess if I could say the one thing (well actually 2) I could say really appeals is that this isn't just a romance series, but a story about people growing up, and really nailing the realistic setting and feel of the anime to a T. We follow our main man Godai, who at first starts out as a hopeless ronin with seemingly no sign/hope of a good future ahead of him. We then follow him throughout a 5 year span where he goes through many things in his life and he grows as a person whilst becoming someone who can be there and provide for Kyoko.

The next thing is how the world of Maison Ikkoku feels real. This world feels like it could very much be a real location with how the show frames its shots and the overall aesthetic of the entire series. While there are a few problems with the writing here and there, the series manages to stay true to what it strives to achieve for the most part. I honestly couldn't even begin to describe what makes Maison Ikkoku appeal to me so well, I guess I could just say that I like how realistic the series is and that we get to see our two lovebirds grow as people. At the end of the day, Maison Ikkoku tells the exact kind of story that I want to hear, in a way that I very much would like it to be presented to me.
