Only Dezaki could turn the veteran boxer trope stuff into pure magic I guess haha. It's during S2 when it hit me that Joe is one of the best written characters ever. So much depth to him after his wild younger life in S1.

Probably a fake out with the dog I bet, haha. That's cool to hear. My old roommate I think I mentioned playing it too, he last told me it's his favorite since FF10 now, aside from FF7Remake/Rebirth. He stalled FF16 to play Rebirth, heh. But yeah gameplay wise FF16 doesn't sound like one that's easy to put down as you've had to do. Makes me think of the Elden Ring DLC coming up that I want to be on out the gate. Do I do another NG run, or just jump in and mess around? I'm hoping with my second character that I at least didn't jump into NG+++ whatever when I finished it. But I think I did to get a few extra settings. So playing the DLC immediately on NG+++ or something could be brutal. I did that with the past games and it's so painful lmao. It's been so long on Elden Ring though I'd probably want to do a full 100 hour thorough replay. But I'm busy with some other long games now and hope I can just jump straight into the DCL... man who the heck knows! lol

Looking forward to The New Empire?

I'm thinking if you ever want a steampunk-ish remix of Joe S1, Megalo Box S1 is great. It's pretty much a condensed take on the Rikiishi arc in ways. I might have even liked this version of Rikiishi more haha. I didn't like him a ton in the original, Joe's other opponents were cooler to me. But Rikiishi seems like a pretty iconic character to Japan.

Megalo S2 on the other hand, thinking a 7/10 for this one so you could probably skip it. It's completely new material and seems really down in the dumps/depressing lol. Which sums up a LOT of S1 of Joe 1 to me in ways. But it just isn't as interesting here. It's like when Rocky is down on his luck, yet this Joe is addicted to painkillers, ran away, etc. A few years time leap from S1 happened. I just don't find myself caring for any of the characters much by this point, there's a bigger focus on the kids and stuff in ways. Soooo kind of glad I'm almost done with it and can move on.

How's FF16? Are you enjoying it? I heard that the reception is pretty divided between the longtime fans and the more 'modern' ones.
Any plays for the FF7 remakes?

As someone who's a fan of Fire Emblem, it wasn't a hard decision for me. The reviews are good, the art looks gorgeous and the gameplay... well, it looks fine on the surface. We shall see.

I see you're watching the new Urusei Yatsura. I saw the first 60ish~ eps of the original one few years ago and I'm wondering how the new one compares to the original one? I'm not sure how much the scores here are influenced by the "controversy" (sheeesh), so let me know your thoughts.

For a moment, I thought that my last series added on MAL was few weeks ago. Then I look at my history and it's been almost 6 months... That's an unexpected MIA.

Anyway, I decided to end the streak and watch Odd Taxi, that some people at work kept talking about how great it is and... they were actually right! Very misleading series on the surface, but I got hooked right from the start.

Judging by the Avatar, have you played the latest FF games, by any chance?

I got some Vanillaware games on switch (Unicorn Overlord, 13 sentinels and grimgrimoire) and plan to try them later this week.

“The goddess of victory is flashing her panties at us.”

Think I just saw and heard the greatest quote of all time in episode 15 LOL.

I actually had to slow myself down haha. I want to take my time with it. I read somewhere that the start is slow but that hasn’t been the case. I was hooked from the start.

So far I haven't minded getting through ~12 episode shows if they aren't too bad. Looks like Witch Gundam is the only one I dropped at that point but that was a special case, lol. Blue Look was 24 episodes but I stopped that at the 12 episode point. So maybe that's my threshold for now. You definitely watch a lot more than me though and rotate through several options, so I can see how you'd have less tolerance for the average to bad stuff haha.
Dremark Mar 8, 8:08 PM
Yeah, I have been meaning to watch that one for a while. I'm prolly going to cut down on currently running shows, but itself it's not too bad but it doesn't leave me with enough time to watch stuff that's finished and most of the really worthwhile stuff I would have still seen if I were watching less shows. It was worth trying to step it up on watching current stuff but I think it's too much.
Echelon Mar 8, 7:27 PM
1,000+ shows haha, yeah I never want to sound like I'm ever getting jaded. If anything, I still worry too much about wondering if some shows work better weekly or not. So I still blame that sometimes. There's been some seasons I've kept up with a good show that was exciting to keep up with every episode of the way. But then sometimes like Metallic Rouge I'll wonder, would I like it more burning through it? Yet my whole approach in recent years of at least one episode a day kind of throws that idea out the window, a slow pace generally works if needed. Maybe I'm looking for an excuse and trying to be nice to an average to bad show haha. Who knows.

I didn't know bones did FMA Brotherhood, hah. Well I kind of elaborated on Dremark's wall. In the early 2000's you can probably recall during the decline of mecha anime, seemed like Bones were one of the few still sticking it out. Yet I still fell off mainly because I didn't like the art direction in their shows. But yeah, Rahxephon, Eureka Seven, Xam'd maybe a bit were solid, then I guess they can easily knock an adaptation out of the park like FMA Brotherhood.

So it's some odd nostalgia to me. Would never say I loved them, but in the early days of MAL and all they were a studio I'd frequently stumble upon or hear about, etc. But yeah all these years later, I don't have much to say about their legacy.

I think if Metallic Rouge tried to be more fun than deep and like a next gen Bubblegum Crisis, it would be a lot cooler. It's not outright bad or putting me to sleep, but when an episode is over I'm kind of just like "Ah, okay." lol
Dremark Mar 8, 3:27 PM
Yeah, I don't think any studio bats 1000, as you said, it ultimately comes down to the staff, and even then I think it's hard to have a good end product every time. Really thinking about it more, I think they partially inherited a reputation from the studio they branched off from (Similar to Trigger, actually) and then made a name for themselves early because they had a early hits like RahXephon, Wolf's Rain, FMP and Eureka 7 (as you mentioned). That isn't to say they don't have any well received titles past that (FMP:B is one of the highest rated series) but it seems like they have average output and when people get hyped over a show because it's theirs it always seems like it ends up being a disappointment. Ultimately, I feel like people view Bones as Bones from 15+ years ago rather than current day.

It's like if a new Gainax series got announced. I feel they had one of the better track records as a studio, but I wouldn't base my expectations off that since it's pretty clear it's a shadow of it's former self at this point and most of the talent and management have left. That's an extreme example though, I'm not implying Bones has fallen off anywhere near that amount, it's just that people still associate them with the earlier glory days. Again though, a lot of this is overall reception rather than my personal opinion, a lot of their stuff I still haven't gotten around to. Also having said this, it will be pretty ironic if I end up liking Metallic Rouge, maybe I can get caught up on stuff a bit over the weekend.

Completed gutted and couldn't just sleep it off. One of the GOAT's in my book. DBZ was the coolest thing ever growing up. Chrono Trigger is still one of the best games ever made. Got a second life with DB/Z when I watched it all in Japanese. Now I'm deep into Dragon Quest. Probably the most successful global manga artist out there. Sad...

Ohhh, someone has a crush on Yor Forger lol
Echelon Mar 6, 7:43 PM
Been too long since I was rocking a mokkori avatar here myself. Have you seen the full version of this pic? It's excellent. Though probably AI... still iffy on that stuff but yeah. It's 2024 and I'm over woke goombas and their crap. Everyone should love boobs. Like that recent SNL host from Madam Web and her twins bouncing around like crazy, it went viral (otherwise I wouldn't touch SNL with a ten foot pole haha). A bunch of other small little culture war wins lately I'll spare you the rants on but just yeah, feels like some healing is going on right now in the world for once. Japan better learn fast and get out of this crap asap.
Echelon Mar 6, 5:20 PM
It almost reads like a limitation of the games code or network design in some way, yet like you said it's been 10 years and if long time fans have complained, they should have heard by now. Very weird.

Naaaaaah man I'd prioritize Rebirth over all haha. I have another local friend who was just playing FF16 but stalled it for Rebirth. lol, it's cool seeing some random posts today of people praising Yuffie's character and VA. She was great in the DLC, so she'll be awesome to have around here. Never thought I'd say that about Yuffie 20 years ago. lol

I can see both seasons being a strong 8 if it stays the course. No complaints so far and the extra steampunk makes it a little unique from the original story.

Guessing you've seen this Sweet Baby Inc story blow up. As of tonight, the Steam curator group is almost 200,000 strong. I'm glad this exposed this group (and more) and should get THEM cancelled. You would think their resume says enough looking over the games they've been involved with. Mixed/Negative review bombed games, studios that are out of business now, etc. Want your game and business to fail? Call Sweet Baby Inc now!
