Kinnikuman has been something that has interested me a great deal since I recently started watching anime. Just as Robotech = Macross and Voltron = GoLion, my childhood was filled with anime influence that I was unaware of. As you know, Kinnikuman, was presented here simply as M.U.S.C.L.E. action figures, which were a big part of mid-80's kid culture. You could buy little garbage cans of 10 assorted figures (for the same price as one Star Wars or G.I. Joe figure), or 4 packs of predetermined ones for like a dollar. These were very popular around the same time as Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. "Disgusting" things marketed toward kids that really sent parents into an uproar. We knew absolutely nothing about these little guys other than they were "wrestlers." No backstory. We didn't even know that it was a Japanese product.

I was excited to find out that there was an entire 100+ episode run, just waiting for me to unpack. To finally learn, after 40 years just what those little figures were all about. I watched the first episode and it didn't live up to what I was imagining. It seemed to be in the style of the 1972 Devilman series. Sort of a rough comedy show aimed at kids. I might be hallucinating, but I think that professional wrestler Terry Funk actually appeared as a character. There was a lot of distinct "of the time" cultural humor, to the point where I didn't feel that it was something I could follow for 100+ episodes, so I just dropped it.

HOWEVER! I'm still new to all of this anime business. I never fully dismiss anything. I take in all opinions. So if you think it would be wise for me to reconsider, I would absolutely give it a second chance one day. If there is a better entry point, I trust that you would let me know.

i was watching ultimate muscle when i was a kid and i finished it like 7 times. After 7 times i found and read nisei manga than i learned mantaro's father has also his own series and i started to read original kinnikuman.

Did you hear about the possible Hokuto no Ken reboot announced by Warner Bros Japan? I'm eager to see it.

Stardust Crusaders TV adaptation was ten years ago. I don't want to believe it so.
