Thanks! Did you check out the anime music I've been making too?

I gave it a knee-jerk 7/10 during the first few episodes. I usually am in the 5-6/10 range for CGDCTs unless they're really boring (or the opposite if they're more like Girl's Last Tour, but there's not much like that with the cool setting). I have mixed feelings about it; I think it does a lot of things better than other CGDCT based on my impression of the genre and what little I've seen. But maybe it's not as strong as others when it comes to fundamentals? There's a much more contrasty plot here, switching back and forth between Rin, Rin and Nadeshiko, and Nadeshiko's camping group, and the way it's slowly weaving them together in the end (I assume). Decent from a mood standpoint for something so light, feeling like a lonely travelogue with Rin at times and the slow pacing working in favor of the hobby and the outdoor settings. I'm not as keen on the character dynamics when it comes Nadeshiko's group, and I suspect S2 will be a good bit weaker if it ends up focusing on all of the girls together, but I don't know what happens yet.

btw, is the movie supposed to be watched in-between S2 and S3? I didn't see it listed as a sequel for anything on MAL, so I'm guessing it's meant to take place after all of the seasons, so I don't have to watch until I'm ready. And can just watch S3 first.

I think this is better than his most well-known one, as it at least tried to create a strange world.

I'd describe it as Kuri's crude style attempting to portray Hieronymus Bosch.

Yeah, most of the flashing crap is unbearable. X)

This shit won awards? Panel must have been full of men.
LOL, You could probably change that to "Panel must have been full of men being stepped on." As it looks like some kind of BDSM thing from the screencap, which is true of a lot of his work. I think Yoji Kuri's fame says something about the dire state of Japanese animation at the time. I haven't seen Clap Vocalism, but he's well known for Ai (Love), even outside of Japan, and basically all of his stuff has a similarly crude DIY aesthetic...

Not exactly what you're looking for, but there's an interesting YT channel I found, they talk specifically about horror/disturbing stuff. Not one-shots, sadly, but still maybe you can find something for yourself there:

No sorry, nothing really comes to mind... I try to avoid stuff like that. Maybe Dokumushi series? It's pretty trashy

Hey! Thanks for fr. Can you repeat what you said? Something about one-shots stack (I can only see half of the message)

I remember there being a cosmic horror stack, but they are very loose recs... Doesn't even have the most obvious ones.

Urasekai Picnic might fit, but I also don't think it's that good, and it doesn't seem all that well received either. It's most similar to the book I mentioned, Annihilation, as well as the old Russian book The Roadside Picnic, which was an influence for the popular game Stalker and the Tarkovsky film (I guess that was an adaptation, but it's a lot different). These are sometimes seen as kind of cosmic horror adjacent.
Gsarthotegga Feb 9, 12:58 PM
I might be able to give better recs if you specify what it is about the cosmic horror you like. Is it dread of the space itself, which seemingly can't be escaped? Is it the imagery of the dimension they enter into? All of that? Something else?

Hmm... there's probably not much to mention in terms of anime. There are some mediocre Lovecraft adaptations in anime, usually stop motion. C Danchi and Aragne are probably the closest, but I don't recommend either. You might find them interesting, but I can only suggest checking a trailer to see for yourself. They're short. A lot of series have elements like that but only encompasses a small part of it, like Berserk, for example.

Films that come to mind are Endless and the Void. I guess Triangle, but that's more of a basic Sisyphean take, I think. The former is actually a horror comedy, but it does something similar with cosmic horror as Amrita. The latter I don't remember too well and didn't care for much, but has good imagery. Maybe Mandy? That same director's Beyond the Black Rainbow might fit. Also, Color Out of Space with Cage (LOL). Stuart Gordon had a few like From Beyond.

Literature is probably your best bet. I don't remember all of the names at the moment for the newer cosmic horror authors, but some of Laird Barron's stories are decent. Maybe select Brian Evenson and probably his Dead Space novelization (I think the original game is cosmic horror, but maybe not what you're looking for). Maybe the first Annihilation book. Thomas Ligotti, perhaps. All Tomorrows is interesting for a more evolution-based take on the subject.

Maybe some others will come to mind.

Amrita is the prequel to Aragne. The apartment complex is featured in both films. The last few minutes of Amrita are meant as a tie-in to Aragne. Some prequels are meant to be watched afterwards, but I feel if you watch this prequel first or not doesn't matter. They're mostly loosely connected other than the tie-in. I haven't seen Aragne in quite a while, so I'm not sure if Amrita makes it any more comprehensible, lol.
