Hi DesuMaiden. You seem to be a smart guy. I have a smart suggestion for you:
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - if you haven't seen it before
Black Rock Shooter TV (2012)
Black Rock Shooter TV is a rare avant-garde psychological drama/psychological horror/action anime made by the best talents of Kyoto Animation and Trigger. It is universally hated by both shounen crowd because arthouse cinema is simply beyond their level, and by wannabe intellectual elitists because they are actually not smart enough to understand that arthouse does not need to be advertised as arthouse to remain arthouse.
What to compare Black Rock Shooter TV with?
If you saw Monogatari series, you certainly remember the unique "supernatural" vibe they give off: there is always so much going behind the scenes (even if it is just an illusion) that you constantly feel as if you are missing something important. This is what gives Monogatari the magic surrounding it, and this magical feeling follows you throughout the series, as if you came across an actual oddity.
If you saw Madoka Magica, you must remember how visual, graphic, depressing, hopeful and relieving it was (and you still must be waiting for the sequel).
Black Rock Shooter TV is both as magical and confusing as Monogatari series, and as visual, graphic, depressing, hopeful and relieving as Madoka Magica, and even more than that. It is also a direct reference to Madoka Magica, which is one of the reasons why I love this gem so much, and a reason why I suggest you to watch it if you haven't seen it before.
Before you start watching it, I have to warn you: do not force yourself to understand anything in this anime. It was created to be felt instead of understood, like a beautiful song in a language that you don't speak (in fact, this anime is actually an adaptation of a song!). Nobody who watched this masterpiece remembers anything about it except for their impressions, be them positive or negative - I even heard from some people how they can't remember anything about it, except how scary it was! And you, too, will not remember, and you must not remember anything about it, except for your feelings. If you feel comfortable with its magic and let it surround you, it will make your limbs tremble, it will crush your soul, it will absolutely demolish you, it will make you cry - out of despair at its climax, and out of happiness in the very end.
The only thing that can be considered as unforgivable flaw I can find in this anime is that as soon as you understand what is actually going on, it loses its magical appeal, just like with Monogatari series. After you read the analyses of this anime, you would appreciate its story, but you will never ride its emotional rollercoaster at the same speed again. So, avoid reading anything about it until, after another rewatch, you feel that it does no longer impress you as much as before.
Sadly, the absolute most of its viewers hated it, because its target audience was too young, immature and inexperienced to understand how to watch it. You may have found yourself among these kids in the past, but hey, maybe you are already old and smart enough to watch and appreciate this brilliance!
