Yep, Shueiisha pay him for every page of Hunter x Hunter he draws, is it that surprising? It's pretty normal for a magazine to pay the author for the content they put on the magazine.

I've heard somewhere that Shueisha pays Oda around 20k yen per page of One Piece, I don't know whether every mangaka had the same payment or not tho.

you got any sources

Here is a quote from Naruto Forums that got it from One Piece Podcast, made by Greg, the official translator of the Viz One Piece:

The One Piece Podcast
Interesting program on TV attempted to break down Oda’s salary. They admit it’s NOT 100% concrete but they attempted to be as accurate as possible. They brought in three guests to help deal with the calculations, all of them big-time former... editors:

Nobuhiko Horie- Former editor of City Hunter and former editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen JUMP

Pak Chon-Hyong- Former editor of GTO @ Shonen Magazine

Ryunosuke Ito- Former editor of Psychometrer Eiji @ Young Magazine

First they looked at the fields authors get their money from:
(keep in mind these values are ROUGHLY in dollars)

-Original Work
They suggested a manga author typically can make $100 per page and can move up from there with experience. Two of the panel suggested Oda is currently paid $500 per page, the other suggested $300. They went with $500. and decided to calculate 500 by 20 pages by 48 chapters per year. This works out to roughly $480,000

(If I was doing it I probably would have calculated at 19 pages given Oda’s current work.)

-Printing Tax

This is the figure for tanks. Authors receive approximately 10% of sales. That roughly $4.20 times 32,340,000 tanks sold last year (!!!) times 10%. Roughly $13,582,800.

@_@

-Use of Properties

This is for the anime and movie(s) whenever they’re aired or shown. The author is estimated to get about $3,000 per episode $10,000 per movie. With 50 anime episodes per year and one film that’s $160,000

-Foreign Use

Basically what he gets from overseas sales. They estimate it at $2,000,000.

-Use of Characters

Essentially what he receives for the use of characters for merchandise and DVD sales. They estimated $15,000,000.

Add it all up?

$31,222,800

"author typically can made $100 per page ..." -> 100 dollars is right now 10,226 Yen.

"Two of the panel suggested Oda is currently pad $500 per page, the other suggested $300 ..." -> So Oda is supposed to earn around 300 to 500 dollars per page, so 30,678 to 51,130 yen per page.

Beside the royalties from the books, Togashi also got paid from drawing all those manga by shueisha around 15k-25k yen per page he draw iirc.
So it's quite a lot of money imo.

Wow... those Monster Musume sales are actually kind of shocking. Really happy about it though, that manga is by far my guilty pleasure.

In fact is quite a lot! I believe that almost all places for prose books the author just gets 1%.

Note that is the publisher that spends all the money in producing, printing and advertisement. Than you have the distributor that gets a portion of the cut and after that the Retailer. All of those entities take huge risks for the product and they are an agglomerate of people, the author take no risk(In fact it earns money just creating the chapters in the magazine, and yearly receives an additional amount) nor the rest of the efforts to make his work public and widespread. And given that he is just one person he basically becomes millionaire(if his work is popular) just by selling one of his books.

Madhouse together with VAP and Nippon TV have the anime copyrights.

And not, an anime studio will never get a cut of the manga sales. In the maximum a studio has the anime copyright, and so get a cut of anything related with the anime, but they never get the manga copyright.

ah, and Shueisha the Manga right holder, also is right holder to the anime. This is something rare to happen, normally the publisher just gives the rights for the anime and receives royalties for being the "licenser".

So in fact the anime copyright of HxH is: VAP, Nippon TV, Shueisha, Madhouse.

I see,, Thank you.

^that is actually the norm for book publishers (don't know how much shueisha offers but it must be similar)
10%-15%

he probably receives a flat flee regardless of volume sales.

BnHA second season announced ...

well you have to think about how much its actually worth Togashi producing 1 chapter(as in the literal 20 pages) cause that's all that happens without Shueisha

Shueisha created a platform for all WSJ manga to be published that is even older then Togashi himself plus (im assuming) they also pay for printing and distribution and the many other things that come with being signed to a major corporation

Assuming that the average price of every HxH volume is 432 yen (current Amazon price), then we have:

1,052,701 copies * 432 yen = 454,766,832 yen or almost 4.35 millions USD..

How much would be Togashi's cut on the revenue? Shueisha?

It doesnt help for Toriko manga how Toriko just became Top Tier material, its forced as hell and more generic than Fairy Tail.

still better than trashtama (popularly known as gintama) amirite?

i dropped toriko for a while but saying its generic/forced as hell is stupid. (not that im surprised since its coming from you)
