That's part of it. The thing to keep in mind is that while about every section the entertainment industry is taking blows from the recession, the anime market is probably probbably suffering more-so because compared to Hollywood films, primetime shows and video games, anime is more of a niche medium. The other thing to keep in mind is that Bandai released 2 other anime shows before Kannagi that were similar to it in terms of being popular among anime fans. Haruhi and Lucky Star and I don't think either did extraordinarily well.

There have been rumors that Haruhi didn't sell that well on DVD despite its popularity, though that seems questionable aftering viewing this a few weeks ago. Though Lucky Star on the other hand seemed to do so poorly that Bandai decided to cancel the limited edition for the last DVD release. And by the time the OVA came out on DVD, Bandai decided to not go to Bang Zoom to have it dubbed. So it doesn't suprise me that Bandai decided to ultimately cancel the idea.

Bandai is amazing. Hopefully they keep this up, what they've been doing on all levels (tv, movies, video games, etc) is great for the states.

Did anyone else get the same GI Joe commercial each break?

The R1 DVDs are subbed only.

Interesting move; I wonder how this will turn out for them. If I were interested in this series -- which I'm really not -- I'd be thrilled to get such an awesomely timely DVD release.

Lack of dub is probably due to Kannagi's main audience being the hardcore otaku crowd, who tend not to watch dubs anyway.

Wow, and ANN has the first eps streaming as well.

Nice job Bandai

Great news. Love how they're releasing it so quickly in the States. Hopefully this happens more often!

That was... fast. They announced the license and have a DVD and streaming out the next day. This needs to happen more often.

I wonder if they're going to release dubbed DVD's later like they did with Gurren Lagann. That would be interesting to wait and see.

In any event, I didn't like the show enough to want to rush out and get it on DVD, but I definitely like the speedy release; this could serve as a good business model if they also release a dub later.

Bandai is releasing the 13 episode series and the DVD only episode episode 14 also. Vol. 1 will contain the sub only of episodes 01-07 and vol. 2 will contain the sub only of episodes 08-14.

I think I like what Bandai is doing with this series. Its only 13 eps, get the dub done & pump out those volumes! I look forward to checking out the site as well.

*runs over to Amazon* "Yay!"

edit: Now when the hell are they going to license Toradora! ?

It's sub-only at the moment and they haven't announced any plans to do a dub which is probably why they are able to release it tomorrow.

They may be skipping the dub for this series like they have with a few others. They've been doing this for awhile now....I guess because these type of series aren't selling as well as they would like.

This is different, not only did they license it but they are releasing the first DVD tomorrow and the last dvd in September. I wonder if Bandai is going to do this with more series...
