Yet to check out any of his stuff, but I'll probably give it a try with how much this guy seems to be praised.

What's with all the Lain hate? I loved Lain :(

Regardless, ABe's stuff is amazing, I'm definitely watching this.

For people who haven't seen ABe's stuff, it tends to be confusing, abstract and slow. I STRONGLY recommend starting with Haibane Renmei, as it is by far his most accessible work. Lain and Texhnolyze are much darker and stranger.

I'll check out this new anime, but then I still need to watch SEL. I'll probably pick that up sooner or later... maybe over the summer.

Texhnolyze wasn't written by ABe. You should, uh, learn your material a bit.

No; Lain will probably remain the only series to grace my dropped list forever. As it's the only series I own that I won't complete. I bought the box set based on wide praise and recommendation and watched the first disc, maybe a bit of the second (I forget, honestly) and just couldn't handle it any more. I'm more cautious about blind buying since Lain and a few other burns (though the others I did manage to finish). So Lain will stay as a reminder.

There's nothing about the show I liked. It had no redeeming qualities that compelled me to continue with it, so I dropped it like I would any other series I deem not worth my time for uninteresting or bad elements (art, animation, music, foley, voices, story, pacing etc etc).

I'm definitely in.

It sounds a bit like Lain 2.0, but since I found that one amazing, and like ABe's stuff in general, I'd surely watch it.

he did not write Haibane Renmei or SEL either, d'oh. Haibane Renmei is only two chapters long so you may at least say that he came up with the idea but SEL one-shot was created post-tv series/game and is not really connected to them that much. he is mainly responsible for character designs and i would not really classify any show as 'his'.

Based on the name of the anime and the second scan, I get feeling that the story will be a depressing one. Is it a dystopian cyberpunk story?

Abe said the title is a shortened word of "Desperado".

I say that they are "works" by ABe because his works tend to share characteristics, staff, etc.

He created the series concept for the three of them (and in the case of Haibane Renmei, did more than that) but given that Lain, Texhnolyze, and now this all share the same group of staff is sufficient to classify them in a group. Since ABe is the most public figure of said group, and that the title of this thread explicitly mentions his name, to name said group after him seems logical.

Given that I never said he wrote any of those shows, you criticizing me in an obnoxious manner for a non-existant fault seems illogical at best.

Edit- I said "stuff", whatever. Obvious what I meant.

Hating Lain for the simple reason, that it's to psychological and "weird" for you... tze watch it to the end before judging.

^^This

This show is going to be awesome. With the listed staff and a sci-fi story about a 14-year-old girl who works with advanced machines despite having no background for them with short hair and named LAin, it's guaranteed (imo) to be awesome. Btw, does anyone know when this is set to air?

So who else is excited for the graphic novel version getting serialized in three days? I can't be the only one. After all, ABe = WIN.

There should be plenty of pretty pictures in the next issue of Animage. =)

July's issue of Animage definitely has something about Despera (#7 on this cover reads "Despera"); I'm assuming it's the promised serialization...

In addition, ABe posted a few sketches on his blog with along with a short description of his drawing process. http://abworks.blog83.fc2.com/blog-entry-629.html
Looks outstanding - typical ABe quality.

Ooh, July issue? Is that out yet? I'm going to a Mitsuwa next weekend and would love to buy it if their bookstore has it! ...would they have it in the US by then, you think?

Yeah, it came out on the tenth. There are unfortunately no scans as of now, but you could probably either import it or buy it in Japan.

Unfortunately, my Japanese is only at the level of checking out children's books from the library, so I'll just be sitting back and hoping someone translates it soon.

SO IN!
Wait is he the character designer or will he be doing the story too?
Bah, it doesn't matter, if ABe has a hand in any of it I'll watch it! ^_^

I still haven't see Texhnolyze cause I've been to cheap to buy it....Think I should go buy it like, right now?

Finished the first two disks(8 episodes) and so far I like it.
So far it doesn't seem as complicated/hard to follow as Lian was, but I'm still enjoying it a lot! ^_^

Well on the topic of Despera, does any one have/know the translation for the image on the left, here?
I know a bit of it is cut off on the right part of panel 6 but I thought I would ask.

Texhnolyze=win. Brace yourself for a fantastic ending. (I say brace yourself because it's the best downer ending I've ever seen).

It would seem like ABe has at least some hand in the story, given the "graphic novel" version. I don't know for sure, though, so don't quote me on it. Even if he doesn't, there's no way this can't be awesome, and his character designs are enough to get me to watch/read anything anyway.

Well I just found out after going to watch Vol.4 that the disks for some of the volumes aren't the right ones....for Vol.4 I got the disk with Eps.9, 10, 11, and 12(Vol.3's disk)
and for Vol.6 I got the disk with Eps. 1, 2, 3, and 4(vol.1's disk of course).... Saddest part is that I don't think I have the recite anymore so I can even return them....Well I found some of the disks cheap online so I'll see if I can get those, though it will be awhile before I can finish the show now...T_T
