what a crazy episode (in a good way). The manifestations of their idiot blood were shown throughout the episode.

- I laughed too hard when the train crashed into the building. Funny as hell XD

- Benten <3 Amazing, mysterious and frightening at the same time, as always. She "saved" Yasaburou by not revealing his identity in front of Juroujin and played along with the situation. I wonder if the last ep will reveal more about her true motives and feelings, especially towards Yasaburou.

- No Kaisei and Yasaburou's hot mom in this ep :(

- Yajirou saved the day, thanks to Yashirou and his initiative to use the brandy.

-Juroujin wasn't just some old geezer with long hairs. That rope trick, and a private train? interesting!

- needs more Benten

and still waiting patiently for a 3rd season of Spice & Wolf :'|

.....the fact that the main character feels attracted to someone who not only killed but also ate his dad is the most messed up shit I ever saw on an anime & believe me I have seen a lot of stuff, and its really disgusting too.....but overall the other characters (specially his brothers) are quite nice & the plot line is pretty unique.....I really want to see what the ending is after the last episode.....

You know, a lot of people have commented on that. Yasaburo is not human, so why do they think that he needs to act like a humans Tanukis are Tanukis, their life experiences are so very different from humans, that there is little surprise that they have different views on humans and even death. Being killed and eaten (by humans and other animals) is a natural part of being a Tanuki. A shark will eat you as well if you let it, but do you hate sharks? If your father was killed and eaten by a crocodile, would you feel an overwhelming urge to kill that crocodile, if by some chance you were put in charge of it?

.....no I might not feel an overpowering urge to kill the crocodile, but I will not be in love with it if I may say so.....this anime has a good story & good characters (may be 8/10 imo), but really I for one do not get this aspect of Yasaburo's character, may be I am not as ultra modern or smart or understanding as you guys but I really love my parents & don't understand how can he act/feel like that.....

Love means never having to say you are sorry.....even if the person you love ends up cooking your father in a hot pot (sorry, old American joke there).

Well, Yasaburo himself doesn't even understand it, and he has stated several times that he wouldn't particularly mind if Benten had him in a hot pot (outside of the dying part), so at least he isn't a hypocrite. My advice is just to remember, you are human, he is a tanuki, of course you might not understand why he thinks that way. Just accept it and move on. There is nothing "modern" or "smart" about it, it just is.

Can't claim to have read it, though I will be buying both of them soon. But watched the episode again, missed the importance that Benten saw Yajiro's train before he crashed. I willl stop predicting an ending, and will switch to pure homer mode. The last episode will be awesome.

Hands down, regardless of ending. Best animation of the season.

....hmm, I kind of agree with you there, it is definitely one of the best shows this season (on side note, I kind of like Gin No Saji a lot too, although it may seem a bit simplistic or boring to some).....but I will wait till the ending for my final judgement cause these kind of shows are like a whole story in episodic nature & the ending really does matter a lot, mostly cause a bad one might spoil the whole show (look what a happened to TV show "Lost" due to the bad ending or to the manga "Gantz" for another example).....I am most definitely gonna write a review for this show, though.....
.....PS:.....I noticed Benten seeing the Train though, its kind of an extraordinary thing for the show to draw your attention to such minor details, that's one of the beauty of this show for me.....

Great episode! I'm still ambivalent about this big finale thing (and lead-up), because I thought the show wouldn't need to rely on theatrics to close out. Still, there's always been danger brimming beneath the surface, so it all coming to a head at the end of the series is a smart decision. I guess I would've just preferred something different to compliment the show's quirkiness.

That train sequence though! Even if it's cartoonish-ly squash and stretch, it's not often that you see a traditionally animated vehicle in TV shows. Yasuo Otsuka loved cars, and it showed through in Lupin, with a technical skill and exciting direction towards car chases; that same excitement is here too with the majority of the episode dedicated to a tanuki-turned-train screeching wildly through the streets of Shibuya, with his brothers (and accompanying jerks) in tow.

So, with some luck, it might also be adapted to anime. I love this series, a new season would be so awesome!

In fact, this anime adaptation might have been here to boost the sales of the 2nd book. Because the timing is quite suspicious.

Thanks for the heads up. Here's hoping it's incentive enough for a S2, because it really does need to be longer; don't want another Jinrui or Princess Jellyfish. Also that's a gorgeous cover.

I think its more along the lines that shes protecting his entire family, it just seems like shes with yasuburo more than anything because hes the main character and we follow his point of view more, she follows around and has protected yasuburo's mom and brother on a few occassions, and she kind of outright said she likes yaijuro. I really dont think theres any romantic implications between the two as much as id like there to be, and even if there was we arent going to get any resolution
I went quickly through the last couple of episodes and I still see strong vibes that she has feeling for Yasuburo and her kindness and consideration towards him is not just because of a desire to protect his entire family (of course that is also part of her motivation too). The scenes where she protected his brothers etc also happened to have him around nearby. I see the whole thing as the usual Japanese way to depicting romance in a subdued manner.

Given the fact that the anime is based on the first volume of a supposed trilogy with the other 2 volumes not yet written, I am sure there won't be a 2nd season, at least not until the sequel is written.

Then rejoice, because the 2nd book is scheduled for this autumn! http://blog.goo.ne.jp/kyoto-tei/e/1110398b7c2e5c06789b1dd531c876c1

Great news indeed!
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Well seeing his rope action and how he made back-up plans and Benten sits is on his side we can definitely say Jurojin is the big shot here and probably the one deciding things in the Frisay Fellows club. I can help notice also that he looks suspiciously like a Tenkou. Could it be he is the head of the Kurama tengou? Considering we never saw their leader and how they act as Benten bodyguards etc after she left the old man we can assume that they oblige to follow Benten's orders because their leader instructed them to do so after she became a member of his club.

Btw Benten doing tongue-out face was sexual and cute as hell.

Anyway i have to say i am slightly disappointment by the fact that it seems we will get no explanations on Benten motives and reasoning. We have only one episode left and a mother Tanuki to save so no time and even if they tried it will be too rushed and not fulfilling at this point.Hearing there will be three novels and only one is out i get why since a mysterious character like her will lose some of it's essence if it gets revealed too fast but unfortunately we have no idea on whether we will ever get another season(is not exactly the type of anime that we see selling much or studios being very keen to revisit) so i am allowed to be disappointed.

Well as i see it Soun will end up as hot pot now by taking the place of their mother as a final slightly redeeming action. The guy loves their mother and we saw how he acted when the old man spoke about eating her. So now that they are in the next room and they will take her there to eat her nothing will be kept secret and first he will be shamed in the tanuki society for his actions and with nothing to lose anymore he will at least try to save her by self-sacrificing and also save the name of his family so his children can have a future between tanukis by taking responsibility for his actions and giving himself as hot-pot.

If I get any sense of romantic tension it seems more like it's between Yasuburo and Benten, rather than Yasuburo and Kaisei (who seems more like a furry version of the childhood friend). I'm still hoping that we get a bit more of an insight into the mystery of Benten. That little scene where she stuck her tongue out to welcome Yasuburo, and then said something to get him out of hot water, was priceless...

Glad other see the attraction to the way Benten acts.

Plot that keeps you on your toes until the end, but we think the narrative to defuse anxiety thanks to a lot of laughter, nothing bad.
Above the flight of the train in the Club on Friday was epic! XD
Some Characters like Benten and the old Juroujin, are still shrouded in mystery, who knows if there will be time to deepen their person.
Episode discreet.
Now comes the grand final, I'm curious.

Well this was an exciting one. And the finale promises to be even more climactic. Most of this episode is Yajirou in train form carting Yasaburou and Yashirou around the city. The sequence is one of the strongest animated flights of fancy the series has yet offered. At once recalling the Cat-Bus from Totoro. And being reminiscent of the big festival climax of the tanuki themed Ghibli film Pom Poko. I don't know how they do it, but amidst a very mature and heavy plot and a lot of very adult humor. This series manages to tap into that distinctly Ghibli sense of whimsy. And no scene has shown this off better than the flight of the Yajirou-train. Really great stuff. I also thought it was too funny that alcohol inspired Yajirou to get going again.

This episode seems to build towards a conclusion next time, in which all shit will hit the fan. Yaichirou is freed and makes it to the Nise-mon election in time. It was unclear whether he'd play it coy or what. But he comes out guns blazing hurling accusations at his evil Uncle. Meanwhile Yasaburou is scrambling to save his mother now from the Friday Fellows pot. As saving Yaichirou has put her in danger. It seems the spooky leader of the Fellows is going to be the main opponent in the battle of wits to rescue his mom. As Benten's allegiance in the matter is kept deliberately vague. She doesn't rat out Yasaburou and even allows him to tag along. But she doesn't exactly help him that much either. Content it seems to watch him squirm his own way out.

I didn't get why Yasaburou was freaked out by the restaurant name until the very end. The Friday Fellows are having Tanuki fest in the room next door to the Nise-mon elections. While this is meant (and does) to build tension as all the tanukis in the room are now in peril. I see it as setting up the means for Ebisugawa's fall. Definitely from power and respect when his foul deeds will most certainly come to light. And possibly into a stew pot.

If brandy has the magic superpowers to turn a frog in a well into a superpowered train, I might have to rethink my stance on not drinking.

Benten seemed to be playing the good side this episode, letting Yasaburo bullshit the Friday Fellows about having never seen a tanuki before.

Also, this Crunchyroll comment for the episode deserves wider appreciation:

"Don't drink and drive. Do drink and become a train."
"No, son, you may not have your body pillow at the dinner table!"
