Seems like K have it good. I don't really like K.
I, who is about to awaken, am the Sekiryuutei who has discarded the
principal of domination.
I shall walk the road of righteousness by having the infinite dream and
hope!
I shall become the King of Crimson Dragon.
And I promise you all! I will show you the future that shines in

Key observations

- The last 2 volumes of "K" are vastly boosted by event tickets. Whereas the first week sales of K vol.5 was around 5.5k, here we see around 8k sales for vol.6 & 7

- Nekomonogatari added another 3.7k of sales. According to anecdotes I saw in Japanese forum, quite many casual fans of the -monogatari series did not even know the OVA was released (much less aired on TV) already. This would explain its bigger tail compared to other anime. This brings it much closer to what the last volume of Nise (just short of 60k).

- OreShura and GJ-bu have accumulated sales. Most likely to see them again next week because of the flood of new titles coming.

- Aikatsu v1 is also showing strength. A minor surprise hit for 2012 Fall anime.

- ROBOTICS;NOTES OP single failed to chart !!

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Nice to see a big follow-up for NekoKuro v1.

Good to see OreShura v1 and SAO v5 continue to truck on and nice to see GJ-bu v1 add more.

This is really the calm before the storm... Next week is going to have pretty high thresholds with many "hits" coming out in the March 18~24 week. And some of them like Gundam UC v6 and Nanoha Movie 2 having multiple editions that will rank as well, lol.

Gundam UC v6
GaruPan v3
KuroBas v9
Horizon II v7
Nanoha Movie 2
Love Live! v1
Chu2koi! v4

**,*** ** Zettai Karen Children -The Unlimited- Hyoubu Kyousuke [DVD+BD]: 2012/03/20
**,*** ** D.C.III ~Da Capo III~ [DVD+BD]: 2012/03/20

Nanona movie 2nd - super deluxe, deluxe, regular editions
GirlPan v3
Horizon2 v7
Chunibyou v4
Psycho-Pass v4

Disappointed that Stacatto Days (Yama no Susume) didn't rank on CD singles :(

Glad Someday / Wonder Zone is still selling well. Can't wait to see how BD1 does next week for LoveLive!

Happy to see Nekomonogatari, Ookami and Oreshura adding more.

Edit: looking not so forward to the numbers for D.C.III.

Garupan v3 a chance at top ten? I should think so! Top current release perhaps.

You expect other titles in their 2nd or 3rd week to outsell K in its first week? It is not a matter of whether K is great but simple practical market maths that K is in the top spot.

I'd say the opposite so far: this is fairly small second week. It's smaller than any Nise second week in absolute numbers and smaller than all but Nise v1 in terms of percentage of the first two weeks. It's still 7k behind any Nise volume as well.

I think it can still hit 55k (lowest Nise volume is 59k) but it'll take a little while unless the third week is unusually large.

I agree with the numbers. My focus is mainly on how Neko-Kuro v1 compared with the last volume out in the -monogatari franchise, which is Nise v5. And I think I misstated my point - instead of "bigger tail" the speculation is more about a "longer tail".

And I am also thinking a final figure of around 54-55k.

A second season has already been announced.

Also, to those who are saying K doesn't deserve being at the top, this ain't about which anime is best. This is about which anime can pander to it's target market the best. And quite clearly, K managed to do it brilliantly. Seriously, this is like asking why a KyoAni anime sells well.

While what you said about K has good point, on KyoAni the truth is these days a KyoAni anime does not necessarily sell well. Look at Nichijou. And Tamako Market is likely to perform well below early expectation. If the pandering theory is correct, one may say that perhaps KyoAni does not really pander to its target market always that well, or it does not really do as much pandering as many stereotypical views have it. At the end, I think asking why a KyoAni anime sells well is as valid as asking why an anime by any other studio sells well.

I almost wonder if people are just being sarcastic bringing it up now since they know you'll always respond to it every week.

^ Yeah, this constant reference to KyoAni when talking about fans supposedly buying anything that "panders" to them regardless of quality is one of the most persistent zombie ideas in all of fandom. No matter how many times it's killed with facts/evidence, it keeps coming back and awkwardly shambling onward, refusing to die.

I was referring to the earlier ones and ones like Chuunibyou, but you got the point. And it's actually quite sad if they can't meet their target markets that well. That's pretty much the only thing they've got to run on. It would be a sad day for the anime industry if KyoAni were to shut down, simply for the loss of their beautiful animation.

It think the original comment is already sarcastic lol. Totoro is a classic that will continue to sell as long as babies are born in Japan xD. This is just like people commented on One Piece earlier in the manga news section

Regarding K topped the week's chart, I think it's mainly because this is a slow week, as well as the the event ticket that symbv mentioned. First week's 5k is so-so for an anime with that much production value.

Well, then you seem to pick and choose only the successful KyoAni titles. I mean, even early KyoAni has big failure like Munto, and recent KyoAni has failure like Nichijou. The bottom line is there is a point of asking why a KyoAni anime sells well, because KyoAni anime does not always sell well either.

Very much agree. I always have very high respect for KyoAni, and it is not just the quality of animation, the fact that its show does not always sell well actually indicates a willingness not to always pander but to tread new ground, even though to its detractors what they do look all the same.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I was referring to the earlier ones and ones like Chuunibyou, but you got the point.

Seems I had a poor choice of words. I shouldn't have mentioned a specific studio.

And it's actually quite sad if they can't meet their target markets that well. That's pretty much the only thing they've got to run on. It would be a sad day for the anime industry if KyoAni were to shut down, simply for the loss of their beautiful animation.
Very much agree. I always have very high respect for KyoAni, and it is not just the quality of animation, the fact that its show does not always sell well actually indicates a willingness not to always pander but to tread new ground, even though to its detractors what they do look all the same.

Too bad our respect is not shared by everyone. It would be great if they tried to create a different type of anime, though that's unlikely to ever happen.

I agree but BTOOOM 4 will be lucky to get ranked at all next week. Don't understand but... oh well!

Like I said in the previous page, K already has a confirmed second season coming.

I respect KyoAni as well. It's just that I cannot bring myself watching their recent releases since they all feel the same to me. KyoAni these days is just going around, picking up some obscures titles while studios like JC Staff and A1 keep stocking up popular adaptations. It's not "breaking grounds" if you pick up obscure titles, but then still use the same old drawing styles and plot devices tainted by the Moe stigma that people have come to associate KyoAni with.

I'm disappointed considering how much potential had been wasted when KyoAni not adapting popular stuffs out there like SAO or Little Buster. Imagine what would have turned out for those series. KyoAni needs a change of direction, and fast. Just copy what Sunrise did. They are the best at diversifying their works

I was referring to the earlier ones and ones like Chuunibyou, but you got the point. And it's actually quite sad if they can't meet their target markets that well. On the other hand it would get rid of a lot of disinformation, misconceptions, inter-fandom drama (the Shaft vs. Kyoani thing is just insufferable and you'd sometimes think they are the only two studios worth paying attention to the way some diehards go on about them) and just general unpleasantness within the western anime community right off the bat. Frankly after all the crap I've had to deal with from Kyoani fans over the years and just how much damage I think their existence has done to peoples conceptions of anime, the fanbase, moe, and the relationships within communities I would not shed a single tear if they were to just go away. I mean I'd feel sorry for the people that genuinely just like their stuff and aren't obnoxious about their appreciation of it by putting other stuff down at the same time, but the benefits I can see of them just never being a factor in anime again far outweigh whatever might be lost, which right now looks to me to just be a specific fluid style of animation with specific character designs.

Also I think people are grossly underestimating how many units Tamako Market is going to move. It's first volume is currently occupying the #27 spot on the Amazon Bestseller charts as an example and the 2nd volume has been steadily climbing as well. It must have done something to get attention back, but god help me if I could possibly guess what as I'm really not good at honing in on the things that Japanese fans go nuts for. I'm not seeing signs of it being another major smash hit, but it's not looking like a major bomb either.

I guess you can count me as another one of those people that sees the Kyoani fanbase as crazy devoted and who has the hunch that no matter what their output it will sell respectably because of that strong devotion and obligation to support them within the base. If it does do well (Going to claim well to be 6,000-7,000+ per volume here) I think it'll provide a fair bit of proof for the theory that diehard fans showed up at the 11th hour to I suppose pay their dues. If not then I'd say symbv/jmal's points stand. Very curious to see what happens here as even the pro-Kyoani crowd seems very certain it'll be a disappointing return come next Monday, whereas I'll believe it when I see it.

The problem with this is that Sunrise is almost impossibly huge and in a rare position where they are set up to do this sort of thing and diversify while Kyoani isn't really if for no other reason than the simply lack the same access to diverse resources and talents. Sunrise is essentially a collection of producers with a stupid amount of capital and human resources to draw on from outside the company (think like New York Yankees buying their team type deal), whereas Kyoani is very much an animation studio in the traditional sense (think Mushi Production) that keeps a familiar in house staff that essentially contribute on every project. It's not to the point of Shaft where they literally have only have one director who controls basically the entire vision and direction of the studios projects, but it's not hard to see how a lot of their stuff can end up feeling sameish when it's a lot of the same people working on every project.

Compare that to Sunrise who are subdivided into approximately 10 different sub-studios each with their own assigned producer pursuing their own ideas and who can and will simply hire the staff and cast they need for a given project based on their resume and also pull on Namco Bandai's internal resources like Lantis large retention of music artists and you can see why they have such a different approach by necessity. Sunrise is also in a rare position because of it's size, history, reputation, capital and position as a Namco Bandai subsidiary to essentially be it's own content publisher and to deliver a steady stream of it's own original copyrighted franchises.

Unless Kyoani suddenly has a major turnover in staff or starts to look a little more for outside talent to come in and work with them on a project I expect the ideas, processes and overall output to remain very familiar.
