That period after you finish a good anime/manga...

Does anyone else tend to get depressed just after completing a really good series, losing the motivation required to get into something else?

The better something is the harder it is to let go. I know this, yet I always find myself surprised when I go through the same thing over and over. It's happened to me quite a few times over the years. Not too often since I've been seeing less and less over the years, but there have been times that stick in my memory where post-anime/manga depression has managed to grab me. It usually wears off in a day or two, thankfully.

As I'm sure most people have worked out after my recent Love Hina postings, Love Hina (manga) is the latest to be added to the list of series that depressed me once I finished them. Even though it's plain and unoriginal looking to someone who hasn't read it, it's probably the most charming and definitely one of the most heart-warming stories I've seen. It just goes to show that, if a story is well-written, originality isn't that important.

Right now, after finishing Love Hina earlier on, I'm finding myself even less motivated and more depressed than usual. It's always hard to finish something great because it's never as good the second time around. Even though I have a few series that I know are worth my time, I find myself unable to bother with them at this moment in time - they're going to have to wait until Love Hina is out of my system. -_-

Yeah, I got kinda down after watching Elfen Lied and Higurashi.

However, I don't get that feeling anymore now that I got Rock Band 2.

Can I get a "Booyeah!"?

I always WRYYYY if something like that happens.
It happened when I finished Slam Dunk,
It happened when I finished Battle Royale,
It happened when I finished Blame!,
It happened when I finished Gantz (first phase),
It happened when I finished every episode of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
And I am sure it will happen when I finish Berserk, Vinland Saga, Air Gear, Hellsing, Vagabond, etc...

Haha, yea, I know what you mean.

It's like after you finish a good series, all that's in your mind is "wow".
To name a few, it happened to me with FMA and Code Geass.

I often end up in deep thought, pondering upon the lives in question during the nights, daydreaming about the true meaning of life. Of what reason do we breathe at this moment, or why... Ok, maybe a little dramatic, but yeah. lol.

I don't really get depressed after finishing a series, maybe except Cowboy Bebop. However, I do stop watching anime for a short period of time after I finish a great anime or manga just to let it sink in.

That hasn't been happening for quite a while now, everything I've completely recently are all pretty mediocre, and I just jump right into a new series.

Don't tell me about it! At best, I have a constant space-out for two days. At worst, two weeks. I couldn't, and still can't forgive myself, as a christian, for finishing Angel Sanctuary and liking it so much. I was literally depressed when Slayers Next had to end.
Revolutionary girl Utena made my head spin for days on end, and I still don't get that show. And because it's so fresh to my mind, the Nausicaa manga still pop's into my mind every now and then.

Really, I'm suprised I can keep my normal life up.

This reminds me of when I just had finished The Law of Ueki, and the thought of not seeing another episode made me depressed. Now when I look at the name, or read about it, I get depressed because I had finished such a great anime.

neither do I. In fact I go strait to the recommendation thread and hope someone will guess my taste and recommend me the next big thing.
I guess I'm trying to find a new series that will be even better then the one I finished.
I'm perfectionist I guess ^^

I get this when I finish most things, whether they're anime, manga, books, films or games. Good things leave me thinking "well how can I possibly top that?", average things make me think "that was a bit of a letdown, what if the next thing is just as lacklustre?" and actively bad stuff gives me a "dammit I need to floss my brain! Is everything going to be this shit?" feeling. The only way I tend to avoid a mix of at least one of these is if there's something I really strongly want to watch/read/play afterwards, which unless the thing I've finished is part of a larger series, isn't really that common. I'm hard to please.

yes i know that feeling i finished shakugan no shana about a month ago and i still feel that i need more eps, it can`t end there it must continue(and i hope there will be a 3rd xD)
it happens specially with romantic animes, and that`s why action anime is meant for, to forget about the romantics and go on with your life xD, or stay in the sadness forever T_T
when i finished love hina i was kinda happy

but i think it would have hitted me harder if keitaro picked

like in macross hikaru picked the one i picked
plan to wath the newers to see if it has some conections

The more time and effort invested, the harder my cold heart gets hit. It's rare for films to have a lasting impact on me since they end so quickly... I'm able to watch and move on. But if we're talking about a story I've put a lot into and got a lot out of, such as Love Hina, which I re-read numerous times while waiting for new volumes (I refused to read it online), then it's hard for me to forget about it in a hurry.

RPGs don't usually have that sort of impact on, the reason being that the gameplay is usually rather stale by the end. I only recall a few special RPGs, such as Final Fantasy VII, Suikoden II & 5 and Grandia having that sort of impact on me.

I like to reflect on what I've just seen. And then I hunger for more... better... But when an anime is good, the reflection period is longer, and I think a lot harder. Especially if the anime was sad or inspiring.

I can totally understand how originality doesn't matter, and that it's totally down to execution. But if the execution is done right then it is original.

The last time I finish a good anime was a few weeks ago and during this period of time, I have already watched 10+ anime and the last time I watched an anime was several days ago. Lose motivation to watch another anime? I don't think so.. It is only natural that some anime are good and some aren't. More over, the only way to find out whether an anime is good or not is to watch it. And if you find that most of the anime aren't good, then there is nothing to watch.

Very often in fact, what I do is find something new and epic to watch that can overgo it and the feeling leaves me. Seto no Hanayome was a great show, but I wasn't depressed after watching it or anything because i had ended because I'm already occupied with many other greatshows I can't wait to continue.

I remember after finishing Welcome to the NHK, Yakitate!! Japan and Higurashi, and even CG I felt a bit down for periods, because it was so great and it had ended and I couldn't watch it anymore. Depends much overall how good the show is and the ending.

Such as Rozen Maiden: Traumend, not the overall best show but the ending made me want another season, so I'm still longing for one.

Especially it hurt me after finishing CG in middle of the climax and having to wait long long time for second season, painful.

This happened to me a few times.

The heaviest it probably hit me was with Sailor Moon, actually. Even though Sailor Moon is far from my favorite series ever, I put such a huge investment into it from start to finish (200 episodes). I had gotten really into the groove, and then when it ended, I didn't know what to do with myself. It felt like there had to be more.

In contrast, a short series like Elfen Lied, I gave a 10, but I didn't feel depressed at all after finishing it. Probably because it is so short (13 episodes).

I also felt depressed after finishing Dragon Ball GT, but that's probably because it was so shitty, I was sad to see DB go out on such a pathetic note. ;)

I used to have a lot of periods like that, but only in the rarest occasion, if ever, do I have a such feelings now.If it was a really good show, I would think about it and then go online to see what other people thought, but I don't moan about how there never will be another anime series like this. But I know that's not true and I will find series just as good, even if they are not similar.

Still though, I miss that feeling kind of....Series I've watched lately lack the spark that made me love anime so much, other than FMP TRS I finally got to finish watching. I think like you said, I just get hardened and isn't as easily impressed anymore. I guess it's technically a good thing, but I can't enjoy something as easily now.

Yeah, I know what you mean, OP! Upon finishing a good/excellent anime, I usually don't feel like watching another series for a while. Well, at least not a series that is in the vain of the previously watched one - unless it's known to be better than the previously watched series.

When I finish a good series, I usually either just let it sink for a day or two, not watching anything during that time, or alternatively, somewhat forcefully watch one to few eps of any series that are currently being aired - I'm the kind of person who has troubles starting anything, but when getting "in the mood", I just marathon it up crazily. That said, by watching a few random eps of anything, just after finishing a series, I usually somewhat regain the mood for more anime. Few eps here and there don't feel as depressing as starting a new series and getting in the right mindset.

Except for the really crappy ones, and ones that have another season.

That's why I'm always afraid to watch the last episode of something.

really depends. if the end is considered as a happy (or around it), than I just think about it for some time and don't watch any new title for a while, keep thinking over about characters and their moves. but it really depends on managed series to touch my feelings and made me concerned or not. the most painful end for me was Cowboy Bebop's one. if I was smoking, I would smoke a cigarette or two...

last time a felt the same way, was after Solanin manga, which made me to think about some circumstances in my life a little bit different.

every time I finish a good series, I feel like I have to say goodbye to my friends, but it's definitely hard to find such anime or manga. recently most of them just withdraw my cynicism...

I thought at first that it was depressing when one of my fav animes finished and I couldn't get into new animes because of that depression period however I was definitly wrong.
It's not you being too "Depressed" but you getting more "Picky". You've seen the best (for me it was Claymore) so watching the rest simpily just seems like you're filling your time. EG I tried watching Gurren after Claymore and Gurren which I would probably normally spamed all 27 eps in aday and give it a 9 only got a low 8 and I nearly dropped it a few times because I kept comparing it to Claymore.

You need to watch animes in order from worst to best. You should skim through animes to see if you'd like the anime or not eg I skimmed through Claymore & instantly knew I was gonna like it so I watched about 80 animes which I didn't really like so much b4 watching Claymore. If I had of watched Claymore first, I would never have watched the 80 other animes.

I will live on no matter what... so I can meet you once again.

It usually happens to me if the manga/anime is a shoujo (just because of so much more character devlpmt), is long, and if its a good ending.

A perfect example? Ichigo 100%
Another would be GTO.
An odd one out would be Golden Boy, so short, but so amazing.

A lot of people are saying death note, but I hated the ending, so I didn't feel that way about it.

Happened when I finished Blood+ - I felt like: "Damn, how am I ever going to find an anime like it?" Then I started looking into other animes, consistently dropping them because I didn't feel much for them - they weren't like Blood+.

Now I'm into Vampire Knight, and I'm still looking for animes that I will like like these two.

I have to mention, that I easily give up on animes - even before I really get started :b That's a very bad habit T__T

I'm the exact opposite.

After finishing an excellent series, I become happy, optimistic, and most of all, inspired to do great things with my life.

This isn't just for anime or manga either; any book or live action film has the same effect on me.

Only thing I'll say is that after watching a great series, I like to watch something that I know will be mediocre or downright bad. I don't want to spoil my enjoyment of a potentially good series simply because it can't measure up against a bona fide classic.

I agree; it's painstakingly difficult to move on to an Anime to match a great one you've just finished. For example, I absolutely LOVED Clannad and Kanon; in a sad effort to find the same kind of joy I had watching these two, I looked for Animes in similar genres with them, but nothing compares. I suppose that's just the way of things, and I know my opinion is but one in a million, but that doesn't change how hard it is to move on. Hey, at least we gain more of an appreciation for those special Animes, right?

While I wouldn't describe it as depression, I do sometimes have a hard time moving onto another series after I finish something I really liked.
If I really can't get over it, I'll check to see if there is a manga version or good fanfiction available, I almost never re-watch a series though.

It's not that I fall into depression, but if I really liked something, I start to compare everything I watch after that with it, especially if those two series are quite familiar. After Ichigo Mashimaro, I thought Hidamari Sketch was horrible, although I might have liked it if I hadn't had my slice-of-life comedy fix for a while.

Though I watch quite some series that are aired weekly, so I always have some variation. =P
