simple question, both studios are pretty much on top of their game atm and been up there for quite some time. but which studio would you like to animate your ideas?

sunrise:been in the genre for over 3 decades now, renowned for their gundam series, brave series(with takara studios) and the original combiners. known for their scientifically plausible scenarios.

gainax:younger company, brought us quality shows like TTGL, NGE and diebuster/gundbuster. the catalogue is not as deep as sunrise but they sure make logic/physics defying anime.

if you have another studio in mind. lets hear it!

Am I the only one who remembers why Yoshiyuki Tomino was so reluctant to make another Gundam series/movie/ova?

If it was my idea, I'd go with Gainax cause sunrise would try to tell me how to write it. "We want the main mecha to show up in the first episode", "Needs more mecha" all these statments just so they can sell more toys/model kits. It's B.S. I love them for what they have released and what they currently are releasing but I'd be more inclinded to produce it as a Manga myself first so that my property could be true to it's original story.

If I was forced to choose between the two I would take Sunrise, but if not I would go with Satelight because Macross Frontier raised the bar.

If I were to pick a studio to animate my ideas, it would be Gainax. As with what most people say, they make law defying animes, which would be a nicer medium to be showing off works.
Of course, Sunrise is nice as well. If this question were to be :" Which of these two studios is your favourite?", I probably won't be able to answer that.

@ laborpilot86, Are you serious? A publisher isn't going to define your anime as serious or goofy. They may inquire how to improve your series/ova/movie and they may not want your anime based on your concept but they wouldn't turn a drama into a comedy or vice versa.

Gainax. They're able to harmoniously blend complex philosophical concepts, surreal humor, and psychologically traumatizing emotion into their anime. With Sunrise, it seems that the mecha itself is often the centerpiece of the anime, whereas with Gainax, the mecha is usually a tool for facilitating grander concepts.

It's true that Sunrise did the latter with Code Geass, but the results weren't nearly as profoundly executed as they could have been (though it was still excellent).

Erm, I would go with Sunrise, only if it was the 80's and 90's Sunrise. I liked the older Sunrise shows better.

Gainax. Sunrise tend to twist their plots to sell models and figures, I mean what the hell?

Gundam SEED was a prime example. Also, Sunrise barely focus on the mecha, and just have overpowered specs to win it all (Strike Freedom, again SEED), Gainax don't really do that.

Sunrise(even with the purple flames and exposionsXD )
Gainax's shows more like super-robo show than real-robo...and even if i liked them, in mecha sense the sunrise shows are better...

Not really Cyborgs they are more biomechas

but I would have to say Gainax. I have five reasons

Reasons:
5. Evangelion is the most popular anime in japan
4. Gundam went into a loop after Wing.
3. Although Code Geass is great Gurren Lagann was here first.
2. Gainax made Higurashi, the most brutal anime EVER!

Id go with Gainax hands down, Sunrise's best series was Gasaraki. Gundam is supposed to be real robo? some of the stuff in Gundam absolutely destroys that assumption.

Gainax for sure.

Sunrise was great in the 70-90s, but they have failed epically.
The debacle that was Code Geass R2 - with dead people coming back to life at random
The joke that was SEED Destiny - Super Yamato much? oh yeah stop reusing the same gd scene 50 billion times
At least 00 is good. Terminator Exia. :)

I'd also to nominate Bones for this. Xam'd Lost Memories is not pure mecha, but its more of biomech, but still original designs ftw. Also Eureka seven was pretty good from what I hear.

Everybody keeps saying Gainax only does over the top stuff, but that wasn't the case with the original Gunbuster. The first Gunbuster series was rooted very sternly in real science, even to the point of aging less while moving at the speed of light. The second series got more crazy, more true to Gainax style; still it was built on the premise of the original, only fast-forwarded a few centuries... or was it millennia?

Then there was Eva, which took basic scientific concepts and assumed certain theories were true. Despite the awesome power of the Evas, they were generally limited in what they could do, except when their pilots "lost" or "freed" their minds. Then all bets were off.

Finally, you've got TTGL, one of the most outrageous(ly wonderful) mecha shows ever created. In truth, this one is a super robot series moreso than a mecha. Even so, only an idiot would say the series wasn't epic.

On the other hand, you have Sunrise, who has constantly put out the (at least on the basic level) scientifically sound Gundam metaseries, and then followed it up with the very popular (and deservedly so, in my opinion) Code Geass. While some of their suits (see Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice) do manage to surpass the limits of the realistic fiction within the series, only 00-Raiser has thus far been able to surpass the absolute limits of realism and enter the impossible realm.

So here's the thing: Gainax can do Gundam. I have no doubt in my mind that they could put out a show along similar lines, and that it would be well done and awesome. They can also do Gainax: the craziness of fighting on top of galaxies with mecha that can reach across the universe.

Naturally, Sunrise can do Gundam, and despite what many may believe, they're damn good at it. In fact, when it comes to mecha, nobody has a record or repertoire like Sunrise. But they haven't proven to me that they can effectively work outside those Gundam lines and do Gainax. Code Geass, as far as I know, is the series that came closest, and it didn't even reach Bones' Eureka Seven.

As a writer, my stories routinely cross the line between realism and impossibility. If I were to choose a group to do a story of mine, it would have to be Gainax, simply because they have displayed a flexibility that Sunrise has not.

A Jupiter-sized beating. And back then (in the.. future...?) Pluto was/is still classified as a planet.

Sunrise made G Gundam, every entry in the Braves series (most famously GaoGaiGar), Ideon and (the more obscure) Overman King Gainer. So... not really.
