Yeah, reflecting after each episode is a must for Serial Experiments Lain, you'll grasp the themes, story and symbolism a lot better.
The wikipedia page is a good reference to find out the themes in this anime, because in comparison to a lot of other shows, it's ridiculously deep for only being 13 episodes.

Yeah, the old boy movie is excellent, it is different from the manga in some ways though...
And serial experiments lain is one of those series that you have to watch at least twice to grasp what is going on, it's one of the most difficult animes to even summarize. Like Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Yeah, I just found out about the Old Boy manga from a friend. I knew about the movie, but didn't know it was an adaptation of a manga.
