I knew at once that I would without a doubt drop the anime before finishing it. I just hate the type of art it uses. The plot, I sorta understood because of what the episode said and some background knowledge. The plot is totally interesting, but I think I hate everything else about it. The characters personalities are almost as bad as the art. Most of them are annoying and the rest are super annoying.

Enlighten us, young blood.
So apparently Oscar is annoying, even though she created the strong female character for anime, so without her, we wouldn’t have Nausicaa or Utena, but are okay with Spinzaku from Code Geass? LOGIC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLKhxjfG03A This post in a nutshell. It’s hard to take this seriously and when you gave Air, Code Geass, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, and Sword Art Online a 10, you’re pretty much asking for face palms.

Well that was interesting. Took me awhile to get used to the artwork but the characters are presented well. The setting makes itself quite suitable too for its time age.

Pretty good episode so far.

Hmm.. Don't know why I put this off for such a long time! Found the art to be beautiful, and the plot drew me in so much that by the time the episode was finish I was surprised by how quick it felt.

^Haha same. It's been in my PTW for ages. Having watched Onii-sama e before this, I know what to expect from this series and I'm really looking forward to watching more of this. I probably should have watched this first just so I get the order of Ikeda Ryoko's works right :p

So I'm guessing Oscar is the grandma of all princely and strong female characters. It's only the first episode but I'm already rooting for her.

Beautiful story. A classic I unfortunately haven't had an opportunity to watch earlier..~
Nice development of the plot even in the first episode. Looking forward to the next one.

Always takes a bit of time to get used to such old school animation xD

Her father is so selfish, raising his daughter as a boy just because he wanted to have a son is pretty messed up.

I've waited years to watch this, because I had a feeling I would love this. Let see how it rolls.

.......

Okay, after watching the first episode, I don't know where to start. 27 years before Le Chevalier D'Eon and 18 years before Revolutionary Girl Utena, there was this piece of work. I have high expectations, and some of them have been met just by this episode alone. Still, the timing is far too premature to start praising too show, but I'll say this: I hope I don't lose sleep marathoning Rose of Versailles.

I got into this show after hearing good things about it. And no doubt it was good first episode. It was so easy to get into despite the old art. Art wise I don't expect it to be good so it doesn't bother me. People complaining about art in this show should realize this is a show from way back in the days, of course art would not be like the ones in the modern shows nowadays.

Moving to the episode, Oscar is sure interesting. Forced to take the role of a male and having to make a tough decision between being a lady or listening to her father's orders of being commander of the military.

You also don't see this nowadays, male and female literally punching the hell out of each other. Oscar's strong personality is something I like about her.

I like how the focuss is put in Oscar since the beginning, in the manga everything starts with Marie Antoinette and Oscar's first appearance is almost anecdotic.

It also looks and sounds really well.

Pooh, really enjoyed that first episode. I've read a couple books on the Fr ch Revolution, so am interested in it from that angle, plus I love 79s and 80s anime style, and to boot the characterization so far is multi-tiered and interesting. Yep, pretty sure I'm gonna love his one,

A surprisingly strong start for a 40 episode series. Oscar is impressive, Andre sympathetic and they seem to have the right amount of chemistry from the very first episode, which I feel is definitely going to be one of the features of this anime.

The tone is quite melodramatic at times, and in a good way. As long as it doesn't go overboard...

This looks pretty nice. Audio quality isn't bad; I expected a lot more compression and artifacts, due to its age. I wonder if the visual quality can keep up for 40 episodes, without recycled cuts. I'm not very into the hyper-emphasized drama (feels too old-school, and yet not absurdly over-the-top like JoJo). But I did like, for example, that scene where Oscar and her best friend were fighting in that secluded location.

I started watching this about 20 days ago. I just finished it today and saw that someone commented on episode 1. This show gets slow at time, but keep with it, it truly is incredible.

Ah, gender roles the anime.

I wonder why Oscar didn't hurt her face when her father pushed her down the stairs.

It broke me a little when she decided her path with putting the military uniform on herself thus throwing away her womanhood. She's still such a beautiful rose.
Shame on her father, really. If it wasn't for him, she wouldn't live a life of a boy.

It was a good first episode. I'm sold to watch further.

I'm not into girls beating up guys if it doesn't seem feasible, but I think they did a good job here. 14 year old Oscar looked pretty much equally built to the 15 year old servant.

I watched Anne of Green Gables just before this and it also started with parents wanting a boy and ending up with a girl.

Those brushstrokes, dang. So deliciously crisp. I found myself staring at their sleeves a lot. The painted backgrounds and saturated lighting are exactly the mood I've been craving. Glad to finally be watching this.

The complexity presented to us while introducing the set up in just the first episode is a pleasant surprise. I echo what everyone else said, what a fantastic beginning. I hope the rest continues like this.

Well, I finally got round to it. I'm watching Rose of Versailles. I've been meaning to pick this show up for a while because it's basically catnip to me. Classic shoujo in a historical setting. Ugh, I'm just going to love this show I know it.

Already, I'm getting MASSIVE Utena vibes, I can totally see how Utena was influenced by this show. I'm totally getting Patalliro vibes from the noses and eyelashes, which makes sense because they were made roughly at the same time so I'm assuming that was a popular character design of the time.

Great start to a show, a clear concise introduction that told us everything we need to know for the set up without painful amounts of exposition. I wonder where the romance is going to come in, if it's going to go the shoujo-ai route like Utena or if Andre is going to be the love interest...?

Also, it looks fucking gorgeous. I could honestly just watch this for the visuals itself. That OP with the monochromatic figures and the rose thorns. Stun.

Time to watch this classic, looks interesting so far despite it's outdated animation quality (understandably since it came out in 1979). From the intro I kinda thought the dad would keep Oscar's gender a secret but by the looks of it everyone knows she's a girl. To think Oscar's plan to not become part of the Royal guard would backfired and even made it much worse by being appointed the Royal guard commander.

Nice first episode, Osamu and Akio doing their magic with the animation, the narration is great, good OP and ED... It really looks promising so far. I really like Oscar, she kinda of reminds me of Joe Yabuki because they're both so stubborn lol. It's always interesting to see Anime based on european stories, let's see where this goes...

I haven't watched this since my childhood and I cannot remember a thing other than I loved it then. It holds up so well. Goes to show that if you have a good story and good direction, you can transcend time.

It's crazy how much this influenced Utena.

I liked this episode, I hope the rest of the show can live up, I don't normally watch these old classics.

What a pity! I grew up with anime like these. I will admit I'm not a teen anymore like many on here probably. I have a feeling this website is mainly little kids.
I was a kid back in the 90s and they don't make anime like these anymore sadly. There are tons that deserve a watch. You won't be disappointed.

Oh, I laughed a little, but just because the style is so old-school and the characters reactions were so different from your average modern anime. I just love watching 60-70-80s TV productions (like original Star Trek or Doctor Who series), they are so amazing and unique.
The story sounds really good and Oscar is such a strong character, I must say she is one of the reasons I wanted to watch this show. André, my baby, is a plus! ♡

Yes, these old school ones are the best! They might not have the eye candy of modern animation but characters have a memorable quality to them and they tell a story that captivates you and teaches you something also.
I can't get into a lot of new stuff. It seems to have no soul or memorable characters. They all look the same visually as well. Back then there was more variety in the art style.

Being familiar with the Laraine version of the opening song that I discovered 6 months ago, it's really exciting to finally hear the original. It's the original, right?

On another serious note, what the hell? Pushing your teen daughter off the stairs over a fight? That could kill anyone, be it a boy or a girl. Everyone knows you shouldn't push anyone off the stairs during a fight.
