I'm crying tears of blood here. They just won't stop flowing.
It's easily one of the most heart-wrenching yet heart-warming finals I've ever seen in my life.
I think I might like it even more than Utena...

Fucking 11/10.

Very good show gave it an 8/10 personally I liked the easy going nature the show had the first half. I think it could have been better had it not gone too metaphysical. The message at the end was beautiful and that last episode made up for the previous 4 episodes which where so-so. Confusing story-telling throughout the story but for the most part it was an excellent anime. Very sad but satisfying ending. I think Ringo got the worst part of the deal haha.

That ending quickly escalated... Didn't see even part of this coming until the last ... 5 eps or so, when it all started becoming serious.
Damn...
I just understood when seeing the images of the first poster on this topic :

Loved it. But it started totally differently though, and some eps seemed useless. But still, I'd give it a ... bah, a 9 :D

The boxes were symbolic. People live inside their boxes, shut off from the world and are never loved by anyone. Because of this they simply fade away. Nobody remembers them, nobody cares about them. They may as well have not existed.

The apple was predestined. It represents a variety of things, most notably fate and love. Kanba was fated to be loved and to live. A common line from Shouma throughout the show was that he hated fate because it made life pointless. From the day they were born, they were destined to be loved or to not be loved. Shouma was fated to never be loved. However, Kanba and Shouma cheated fate. They shared the apple of fate and were able to live happily together as a family. But it came at a cost, because they cheated fate they were punished. A punishment that Himari would later share when she got a piece of the apple too.

The message for the precious one was to inform us, the viewers, of who was loved. Kanba said he had somebody that he wanted to send a message to. This is because he was had someone he loved, as fate chose him to be loved. When Shouma tried to think of who he would give his precious message to, he came up blank. He had no one who loved him and nobody to give a message to. This is why Kanba had an apple and Shouma didn't. Of course after they shared the apple their fate's became intertwined and they were able to love each other.

Hah, Kanba and Shouma replace the two kids in episode 1. So that's why there is a child version of the two in that particular title card.

Amazing, I didn't even remember particular scene. Kanba and Shouma's fate was foreshadowed from the very beginning.
"But everything's over when you're dead"
"It's not over! What I'm trying to say is that's actually where everything begins!"
When they gave up their lives for love, that's where their lives truly began. Like Sanetoshi said, everything was a test. I'm sure this show probably has all kinds of things that you'd pick up on with a second watch.

Holy shit.....

I started this show thinking it would be a 7....then later I bumped it up to an 8, and then near the end I was like, at least a 9......

10/10

That was amazing.....

Truly amazing.....one of the best anime I've seen done so well artistically in every aspect....a true masterpiece.

my only beef with it:

What the fuck was with Kanba's dead body in the diner? That never got explained, and if it did, will someone enlighten me on it?

But seriously....that was...magnificent.

The organization killed Kanba's father, other characters allude to him being 'eaten up' or something to that effect by the group, and that Kanba would be next if he kept up his plot.

I'm not sure how I feel about this anime. I like the symbolism & depth but there were a lot of plot holes & needless stuff that happened. Maybe i'll like it more if someone explains some of the more confusing parts to me.

Let me see if I got the jist down. Himari is sick. They could avoid most of the pain & suffering of the entire anime by letting her die but thats not an option so they go after the Penguindrum which is in the book (or not?). Shouma is the only real son of that family but shares the burden with Kanba. Due to the familys past coming back to haunt them (mainly because everyone loved momaka (sp?). No one else cared to bother them unless it involved her) so due to their past making life difficult (thus making Himaris life tough) Shouma decides to tell her to go to the grandparents house (Stupid decision on his part. They were the only ones able to save her but being around them caused her more pain as well). At this point Ringo learns that the charm in the book can save Himari (as well as the drum?) at the price of her life. Fast forward. She uses it. They use the drum. Kinda pointless. Here are my questions:

1. What did Ringo even do at the end? Like.. The spell or charm or whatever was supposed to be able to transfer destiny's which she was using to save Himari (which supposedly the penguindrum alone would've saved her or... something?). The price was that Ringo would become invisible (die). That price was transferred over to Shouma so he vanished instead but if Ringo/Shouma saved Himari then what the fuck did Kanba do??? He went into survival tactic mode with Himari & she revealed the penguin drum. He sacrificed himself to save her using it (i think?). Whats the point of the charm & the drum both doing the exact same thing & saving Himari??

The only possible explanation I could think of is that the charm switched how their destiny was going to go from there (death mostly) but took Shoumas life & the drum/tactic brought their present somewhere else (home, no memory of the brothers, etc) but took Kanbas life.

2. Did Momaka get split into the hats? Like.. Were the hats just Momaka? I'd understand if that were the case considering pink-haired-dude said she was the only one that loved him (or something) so he'd want to keep her alive (technically).

I have a few more questions but can't remember them at the moment.

I didn't get much watching this anime. They constantly said they didn't want to forget, why did they chose to forget about everything and live a happy life then? Those new selves of them aren't even the same person, they are just people like them living a different life.

Also, why didn't Shouma and Kanba get burned by the "cursed" flame when they used the spell? They used it twice: Kanba & Shouma scene and Shouma & Himari scene flashbacks.

The ending where two boys (kanba and shouma) were talking felt like i've seen it before, guess they showed different boys doing the same dialogue somewhere along the show.

8/10.

That was one hell of a ride. Bittersweet but I'd say that definitely wasn't a BAD END at all. Though Kanba, Shouma and Himari aren't together, the important thing is that they've all escaped that miserable fate they had. Himari has a loving family and is free from sickness. The crime their extremist parents never happened (because they don't exist) and they're now free of all the burden that resulted from it. All is well.

Too much goddamned symbolism and metaphores. My brain is roasted after watching this anime. And not in a good way. Too many things that made absolutely no sense. Too hard to understand.

Doddammit, I like intelligent and clever anime, but they overdid it... sadly.

Episodes 1-11 I rate 8/10 cuz nice comedy and Ringo being cute/silly
Episodes 12- 24 I rate 6/10 too messed up and complicated.

Overall 6,5. I really want to give it just 6 because second half of the anime made me angry... but I'll be nice and give it 7...

Never again.

Good start, shitty mid, strong recovery, shitty end

Mostly everything that happened in this show was nonsense. A lot of the character's motivations are really messed up (the teacher suddenly deciding that he wants revenge after making it clear that he doesn't; the pink haired guy... well, I'll be fucked if I know what's going on with him)

The "it was all a dream!" ending is just a cop-out. Symbolism by itself doesn't make for a good story

NO! It's exactly the opposite! They WERE able to leave a trace: they left a message to Himari, they left a memory in Natsume's head, and most importantly, they made Yuri and Keiju finally understand the message Momoka had left them.

The whole purpose of the show was to leave a message "I love you" to us, watchers, from the director, so that we, watchers, no matter how lost we are or will be in our lives, remember that we're not alone, that there is at least one person who really cares for us, so we should cherish that, because "even if fate steals everything from them, the loved children will definitely find happiness."

So cheer up! The finale was epic and grandiose! It totally broke through the limits of the show to spread into the real world of ours.

I kinda agree with this one. The plot holes contained in this anime is ridiculously high. The author seems to have a habit of pulling some magical things out of his pockets. Seriously, the anime was quite ok the first part, it was then on the second part the ruined it. The biggest problem with this series is with its characters, they seem to be too inconsistent. In one episode, one character got his personality 180 degrees and on the same episode it happened again. It was most apparent on Ringo and Tabuki. I'm so happy they didn't get too much screen time later because it really irritated me. But don't get me wrong, I'm not a pure hater of this series, in fact, I somehow liked how the series ended. The flashbacks were good, on how the story made it piece by piece. I just didn't like how the show was executed, I feel like the show is very inconsistent. I'll be nice I'll give it 6/10

I tried my hardest to understand everything I could, but from episode 14 onwards, it felt like the series had raised its difficulty setting. I really hope I have missed something big, because after the ending I thought: "that was it?".
Ringo was my favorite character, even though she was also a victim of the sudden personality shifts / twists in the anime; for example, even after rewatching it, Tabuki and Yuri's desire for revenge was never forshadowed.

I can't wait to watch Yuri Kuma Arashi to waste my time on more symbolism.

Again, how did any of them go 180? It's just nonsense. The characters were absolutely amazing and were developed very carefully over the entire show.

The show is in fact very consistent. It's complicated and touches upon several topics, but it's overall very well executed. It's only a matter of personal preference.

why did it have to be foreshadowed is one question, but it was foreshadowed. Don't the fact that Yuri - "Princess of Lies" - can steal a girl, give her sleeping pills and try to seduce and hurt her physically and emotionally for the sake of briefly meeting her past love, not enough to expect a possible revenge that she planned with Tabuki long ago? A woman who nobody ever said she was beautiful or loved her. A woman whose father hurt her so badly that she almost died if not for a fate change by Momoka? Is this still not enough foreshadowing of the dirtiness in her personality? And come on, ep 17, right before the break, Sanetoshi pretty much foreshadowed and explained everything:
"Isn't it electrifying? In the human world, truth and reality aren't always one and the same. Humans just call their desires and ambitions as 'truth'. Humans will even kill other humans if they have 'truth' as excuse. War. It's war."
And I remember people predicting dark side of Tabuki from the OP alone... so no, there were no behaviour outside the character. Or try to at least prove it.

Seemed lots of random events at first but the symbolisms start fleshing themselves out, and explained with the truckloads of "flashbacks". I prefer if they can embed the flashbacks and other survival strategy sequences more naturally instead of repeated structures (though I get it's the style of this show). 3/4 was enjoyable comedy and I didn't mind the weird/depressing parts being funny at the same time. The later 1/4 and several conceptual dialogues were philosophically electrifying and emotional.
Quite liked how Kanba and Ringo developed with real depth, and the slow mystery reveals of Pink Electric and Fate Diary (Sanetoshi & Momoka). Souma & Masako always feel tropey and annoying, though they somewhat redeemed themselves at the end. The wonderful warm boy that Souma was in flashback ep20 contrasts so much with the useless, naggy, *blocking, usually late, always losing, old Souma. In that sense the end as a loop to ep1 is doubly jolting and wonderful as Souma is finally back to his younger better self, and I never expected the random kids to become the brothers.
Lots of amazing stuff at the end. 24 episodes to learn the penguindrum is not a diary, but the fruit of fate, which is meant to be shared, and to break the bounding "boxes" surrounding abandoned people.

Too ridiculous to take seriously, not abstract enough to be avant-garde. Incoherent and congested narratives aren't "deep". Watching two-dimensional characters yelling for 24 episodes about "fate" and saving Himari was monotonous as hell.

That. was. amazing.

If I had to summarize this whole entire ride and that ending it would be those 3 words. I would love to give this anime a perfect score but there were some bits here and there that I wasn't into. So a solid 9/10 series and 6/5 episode.

The goodbye between Shouma and Ringo hit me a lot more than I thought it would. I don't know how to feel from these bittersweet endings. I know it's good but at the current emotional state I can't help but feel sad. Very complicated feeling indeed and this whole show in general.

So Kanba and Shouma basically sacrificed themselves at the end and just changed the whole entire world completely. Not too sure about those two kids at the end there. Were they actually Kanba and Shouma reincarnated or "ghosts" getting ready to leave with the penguins. Either way beautiful anime. Definitely getting into my favorites list.

I felt like watching the animated Lost. The series is getting gradually more and more ridiculous. Authors are adding "mysteries" and "twists" just to keep this train running but oh boy how stupid it gets. Initially likeable characters start to behave totally illogically, talk nonstop about fate and punishement. Give me a break, you are beating a dead horse already in middle of series.
Art and animation is nice and soundtrack is no doubt the best part of this series, but that is it for me. All those empty symbols and would-be depth and richness of story is so flat, that it is often more interesting to pay attention to penguin sidekicks clowning around. I havent been so angry about anime since infamous School Days, I cannot believe I finished it.
