I watch a history channel history channel documentary about how they predict the future and talk about the mayan calendar and yeah how their calendar will end December 21, 2012 hey that's the same day we all died I wonder if their giant tsunami and big earthquakes and any kind of big disaster like in that's movie called 2012 do people really believe in this? Oh, wait if the mayans can predict the future why the fuck couldn't predict there own downfall of their own civilization well as mayan people? Now don't me people are going to stared a mass suicides because of this.Holy shit.

I don't worry about things like that until the day it happens. Honestly, I had forgotten all about the 2012 theory.

Death is inevitable anyway; if not 2012, one day we all shall die, too.

I mean, seriously, if we worry too much about the future, life is going to be quite boring--nothing but a series of repetitive events. We would spend our whole life building a whole foundation, then just at the moment we have achieve it, we find ourselves to be a bunch of 70+-year-old ancient men, closer to death than life.

I say we might as well forget about the stupid depressing prediction and live for the present, enjoy the joyous life!

That's what they call "the joy of the moment" =D

My old roommate is completely 100% convinced it will happen, and even felt sorry for me because I didn't. She sounded like a nut job to me though.
I don't think the world will end in 2012. BUT! If we're not careful with our consumption and emissions among other things, the world will end soon enough. Sooner than it should naturally.
Anyhow now I'm preaching.

actually everyone but the Mayans believe it's the end of the world, the Mayans are actually still around, or atleast their descendants and they all think it's just the start of a new calender cycle.

But even if you could prove it's 150% gonna happen, so what? Not like we can do anything about it, Humans are pretty useless when it comes to controling the forces of nature, We can't even do any to predict accurately or prevent Hurricanes, Volcanoes, Tornados, Tidal Waves or any of that nature, and those are pretty minor compared to the World Ending.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

From my understanding that is just when they ended their calendar, not end of the worlds. They didn't actually believe the world would end form my understanding of their beliefs.

Also I don't know if you have done any studies into magic, specifically divination, but when predicting the future, the further ahead you peek, the more likely it is the vision of it you see will not come to pass, as a rule of thumb. Mostly because of free will.

That might be why they could not predict their own downfall.
Or mabey their ritual was flawed, or even there was just a mistake made by the caster.

The Mayans did NOT predict anything. December 21st, 2012 is the end of a b'ak'tun, or 144,000 day cycle (the Mayan calendar is really complex, and it relies on base 20 counting). Infact, there are Mayan inscriptions for anniversaries of famous rulers long after 2012. Some extremist movements just hopped on this end of the world theory and our now using the propaganda to hoodwink people.

While what I am about to say is an extremely simplified and crude example, it would be sort of like buying a calendar that only goes until 2020, and then determining that the world must end on 2020.

People have been predicting the end of the world for years. I stopped paying attention long ago. The world will end when it ends. There's no point in worrying about when it will happen.

Hey, just cuz it's on the history channel doesn't make it true. You have to pay attention to what's actually being shown on those nostradamus/mayan theories.

First of all, there have been quite a few doomsday predictions before, and none have come to fruition yet. If you watch closely though, the only evidence they actually provide is a bunch of religious stuff, then somehow they speculate scenarios in which these events MIGHT occur. In other words, even if some people prove it's possible the world can end in 2012, there's no real reason to believe it will. It's really just as likely to end in 2011, or 2013.

I also think it's a little bit foolish to live life worrying about the end of it.

I'm pretty sure the Mayan calendar ends on one cycle. Its calendars go by each century as one cycle, I believe, and 2012 is the end of the cycle.

Honestly, it does not say the world is going to end. It just says 0. How could the Mayan's possibly predict something so far away in time that we, now a days, can not? Hell, I'm all in for magic existing, that would be bad ass, but let's be logical about this.

If people would just take their tin foil hats off for even a second and think, they'd realize their fallacy.

It makes me wonder who was the first douche bag to say the world is going to end. He/she must be laughing their asses off with all the hype it has obtained..I mean, everyone knowing about the idea and they made a movie out of it.

If you'd like to get illogical about this, then I'll show you infallible proof as to why the world will not end.

I do not believe that the world will end anytime within thousands, or millions of years. If not billions.

Humans, no doubt. Life? Probably. The world itself? No. Planets are incredibly durable objects. They're almost impossible to destroy without a catastrophe of a magnitude the human mind can not properly conceive of.

Also, the Mayan's were great at math, but I wouldn't put much stock in their end of the era stuff.

It's not even really the end of the world, but the completion of a greater cycle ( the concept of periodic systems was a main part of Mayan beliefs ).

Anyway, isn't this end of the world stuff the same as the year 2000 end of the world?

You seem to already understand this, but when people ask, "Will the world end?" they're really asking, "Will our world end?" "Will humans cease to exist?"

Of course planets are durable...

The Mayans' world has 'already ended'.

Besides, I'm sure if they had survived this long they would have simply said "Oh, looks like we'll have to go star gazing and map out some new weather forecasts".

Obviously, but that comes from the ego-trip we as humans are prone to.
The world is not ours. It is an object. In reality, an object can not be possessed, it simply is, and we pretend it's possessed. An object is merely a thing. People are objects, not significantly different from any other object. We have power over the planet. To affect it, and change it. That does not make it ours. It merely means we have the power, as an object, to affect other objects.

No, they just did the math right this time, that's actually when the Mayan calender "ends", in the sense that it ends, it really just restarts. Some folks suggest even longer, but 2220 is the bare minimum.
Well, we wont know till we live that long.

But, I might as well take yours and several other people's theory for granted
