This show is like a poem.

And props to Shaft's off-kilter style once again, really capturing something special with this source material. (They always manage to make an impression, for better or worse.)

Beautiful episode. Akari has such a big heart. She's probably given up a lot to raise her sisters but I'm sure her mom would be proud. Hina's trying so hard to be strong too. This family... </3

Ugh. Okay, let me just preemptively point out a major translation error in one of the subs I'm watching (dunno which). It's not "[Rei's] first game after becoming a professional player." It's "his first game [with Nikaidou] after becoming a professional player." Big difference. Otherwise what were the matches seen beforehand?

Thank you! I noticed that too

Damn that ending! Quite sad, but well that's the general atmosphere I'm feeling from this anime! Still quite lovely progress though, let's see what's next.

First part ended strong, and the second blown me away, there are definitly memories I can relate to, and it just felt so beautiful, natural and soft, I teared up quite a bit.
Great episode!

Much better episode than the previous 2. I don't mind watching the shogi, since it seems very similar to chess and I mainly just wanna work out for myself how it works.
I also loved Rei's monologue as Hina cried. The way he said he pushed his family out of his mind cuz thinking about them made him sad, and he thinks that was wrong. But it makes you wonder: what's the right way to deal with it? You cry out all your tears at first like Hina did. Then what? You put on a recovered facade like the sisters do?
It's very powerful.

At first, I was jealous of the fat kid for having an elderly too-good-for-this-world personal servant, but then I remembered the three amazing sisters Rei has.

Such a melancholy feeling coming from this show. I like how all these characters, each with their own respective tragedies to contend with, come together as a sort of surrogate family for each other.

Another stellar episode. The first part was interesting, of course, but the second half was where this episode truly shined. Words cannot do it justice. The violin player did a phenomenal job setting the somber tone of the scene, and Kana Hanazawa did such an amazing job as Hina I truly cannot describe it in such a short comment. Phenomenal.

the whole episode seemed to be wasted on Shogi game... but the part with the sister family is always something to look forward to.

Can't say wasted as such, cuz we learned so much about Haronabu and his Butler's character.

Haha, the 3 shogi bros again. Looks like shogi may be the only thing that brings any joy to Kiriyama's life? He smiled when the game got close with that unexpected move.

*And I liked the shogi match. I'll happily watch more shogi. Idk know how to play but Idc. You can learn a lot about a character and develop the players' relationship during a match. Hikaru no Go specs a ton of time on actual Go matches and that show was awesome. So quit your whining!*

But then we learn the one guy has health issues? Kidneys? Sounds like his butler is more like a surrogate father? The butler couldn't be away for long because he cares for and missed that kid too much?

But oh my. The girl crying at the river did a number on me.

This show feels like it's put together incredibly well. Scenes for seamlessly between empty, happy, and sad. It's powerful and real without being overdone and in your face.

Hm.. You could sit years in front of crying boy face?.. I'm not too sure, why.. I don't think Rei is sadist.. Maybe it is because his rival was very expressive.. As Rei says - how in manga.. But I'm still not sure, if that's what Rei meant..
Ok.. It's like 11:30.. Wonder, when they'll finish.. Though, I really should just search on net, how long are shougi games.. Will do that now.. Ah, wiki says 30 minutes to 2 hours.. Well, understandable..
Hm.. And now we see 15:10.. So long match it is..
Going into this anime, I certainly didn't expect this to be sports anime, lol.. I mean, I heard it's psychological anime or something.. Well.. Either way will see.. Though, I'm really in this anime not for shougi, I don't even know rules for that, even on the beginner level..
Such ceremonies bring only pain and suffering, you think, Rei.. Well.. Who knows.. .. Maybe thinking a bit more.. They probably give different feelings to different people.. And really if this doesn't work for you in particular.. Don't force yourself to do this.. What I think..
Hm, Hinata went to the other place, so that she'd be able to cry about her mother.. That's a bit worrying.. But also, I guess, Hinata shows strength in this.. Not bothering other family members.. Or maybe distrust that her feelings wouldn't be taken in bad way.. So who knows.. It can be viewed in different angles.. So in the end.. I don't know, really, if this is a good or bad thing.. Depends on angle you view it upon..
Throwing dead parents out of your head.. Well, who knows, if it is right or wrong thing to do, as you ask, Rei.. I personally think there is no right or wrong way to deal with this.. Question is more, what you'd personally want to do.. But that's how it feels to me..
Nice continuation of the dead parents topic we touched in previous episode.. It's nice to see all kinds of feelings and thoughts, that different people experience it in different ways..

What a beautiful episode. The difference between how Rei and Hina and how they convey (or not convey) their pain isn't so far apart. For Rei, he's been through so much and have closed himself off from those emotions, probably because having those emotions will get in the way of reaching higher places in shogi and also part because it's just so overwhelming. Him being able to experience Hina's tears and openness and the way the animation expressed this was so so beautiful.

Also on a side note, I'm curious what Harunobu has that's impacting his health. At first he seemed like an offputting character but the way he was so stubborn and determined, yet flawed, makes him a likable character for me.

wow, what an episode.

firstly, nukkaido part. this part just sucked me so much to the story. don't remember i even saw that kind of character building in some other anime. it was absolutely masterpiecely done. and in the end it came out that rei was mistaken all along. just showing how much he's "locked" inside himself.
my only regret is, that i do not know anything about shogi. but somehow that match was still done pretty well.

the second part was great, and heartbreaking. i seriously cried when hina were crying. it was done so well and emotionally. didn't thought it were coming.

and all this "drama" isn't even fiction but pure "real" drama. and the themes and characters were right in place.
above all, i'm feeling this series is less about rei, but more about how the world around rei is shaping him.

This episode bandied an entirety parcel of complex emotions—it nearly makes one feel awkward, like something is wriggling through your watch and going someplace in your mental space where you do not as a rule go. It reminds you that our reality could be a lean, effortlessly torn cloak drawn over a sea of feelings.

+ Hina scene was beautiful
- Goes deeper into Shogi and it makes hard to follow if you don't know the game

Super enjoyable
