How much can fan service increase your score?

There's plenty of talk about when fan service is inappropriate or unnecessary, or when it hurts the show, etc. So when has good fan service increased you enjoyment/rating/some other metric of the show?

I'd expect a lot of answers to be "all the time" if you're an ecchi fan, or "never", if you hate it, but let's try to go beyond that. Take the monogatari series for example, remove the fan service, does it lower your score? How much? What has the best fan service? Which show increases it by the most? There's all sorts of questions one could ask about the subject, but I'll let you guys have at it.

For me, I'd say Nisemonogatari gets a 1 point increase for wonderful toothbrush fap material and fire sister groping. I probably have more, but that's it for now.

Kill la Kill of course gets at least a 1 point increase, probably 2. Apart from that, I can't think of many I like Asuka's plug suit, especially the heat resistant one, but it doesn't quite a get a point for it.

EDIT: I should probably clarify that I am talking mostly of sexual fan service. You include any other varieties of fan service, and from now on I will attempt to preface what type of fan service I am specifically referring to.

I don't rate based on fan service unless I am in the rare mood to watch an ecchi. If its an anime that isn't ecchi and has fan service I won't rate it less or more due to it unless its absolutely shameless with it and just ruins the overall plot or goes against the characters personality traits.

Really the only type of fan service that would influence my score would be reference humor. Because being a fan of comedy I love to see as many types as possible and there's very few things more exciting to me than picking up on a subtle reference. When I see it in a show or a game it means I'm in the target demographic, when I hear it from somebody irl or online it means we share interest in something to an extent that I can pick up on it.
The more commonly discussed type of fan service I'm generally neutral towards, it might be present in great abundance and I just glaize over it as just another part of the show or it might be rare and I just forget about it. I've never seen a case where it gets pushed too far which a number of people have a really low tolerance for. But I can't say with certainty it effects my final score/overall enjoyment one way or another hence the neutral aspect.

Gunbuster and Kill la Kill would not be the same without fanservice.

There are other anime where fanservice is a major component of the work and failing to do it 'right' messes up the final product as much as a bad story or bad animation.

Imagine the following anime WITHOUT fanservice....

Prison School

Kill La Kill

The entire Monogatari Series

^You simply can't.

For all the bitching that the ecchi haters love to do, there are plenty of GREAT anime that were made better thanks to their gratuitous amounts of ecchi and fanservice.

What ecchi haters love to do is go for low hanging fruit like harems and discount them for being simplistic and "pandering".

And yet, they have no problems with other types of anime that do the exact same thing except instead of fanservice it's fighting or melodrama or whatever...

And like I always say in these threads.....the irony of all ironies is that it's thanks to ECCHI that Japanese otaku buy a shit ton of anime goods which directly help the anime industry chug along.

Well fan service is just an episode that does not continue the plot. I like it. I'd rather have a 50 episode anime with fillers than a 25 episode anime that only continues the plot.

I can too if I imagine Ryuko and Satsuki in burkas, but just because it's possible doesn't mean it's right, and monogatari fan service saves me the trouble of searching for fire sister doujins occasionally.

You don't need to judge it solely on it's fan service. I'm simply asking if (sexual) fan service is ever something that would have raised your score compared to the same hypothetical show with the sexual fan service omitted.

Honestly, it depends on the series. If the fanservice is done right, then it can make the score go higher. If the fanservice is put in randomly, then it can lower the score. Since I am a big fan of ecchi and fanservice, this can be crucial depending on the series.

Fan Service isn't just ecchi right? Highschool DXD is in my favorites mostly because it funny but the sexy scenes are entertaining to an extent since the show is about a guy wanting a harem, so they make a ton of sense to be there. I don't know if I could give a clear answer on it score wise.

But back to the beginning of my post shows like Bleach and One Punch man definitively got boosted in their scores for their cool fan service with the fights and what not.

I see this a lot, and I understand story progression being more important than anything else, but saying that fan service (or whatever else you'd tack on) is of no importance doesn't make much sense to me. The animation is what makes the medium unique, and so judging purely from writing seems like it would disregard many important aspects and compare anime, film, and literature by the same standards.

It's not that it's not important, but rarely relevant to my judgment. The closest I have is on Shinmai Maou but it's more from the plot progression(or the lack thereof) than the fanservice that got me to give it its score.

None, fanservice is pretty unnecessary. Unless it's used in a way that actually makes you laugh.
Minus those cliche falls. They're not even remotely funny.

Funny enough I'm watching Bakemonogatari right now and the fanservice is definitely a plus. Makes it also kinda easier to get to know the characters a bit more.

In general I'm always thankful for some fanservice even in serious shows, that's also a kind of entertainment for me.

Well of course there are a lot of anime with god-tier ecchi in it like To LOVE-Ru Darkness or Kiss x Sis for example, but you can't really call it fanservice when the ecchi is the main focus point of the show

As far as anime which doesn't have it as its main selling point yet still contains it goes however, then it's pretty rare to find anything positive. But one good example would be the Monogatari Series I think, it tends to be very creative with fanservice and it fits nicely with the characters' personalities, hence why Nisemonogatari is still my favorite entry of the franchise. On the other hand something like Kill la Kill I didn't really like it; while I understand what they were going for it still felt really awkward and forced to watch

I looked at my list, i haven't found a single show in which fanservice didn't increase my enjoyment. It either enhances an already good show (No Game No Life, Highschool of the Dead, Fate/Kaleid, Bakemonogatari...) or it is the main reason why i watched the show (Monster Musume, KissXsis, Strike Witches etc...).

The only case in which fanservice might decrease enjoyment is if it completely broke the tone of the series (panty shots in Aria would be stupid for example). But i've never really seen that except maybe with the Girls Und Panzer OVA.

Edit: In fact KonoSuba is a good example of show in which i didn't appreciate fanservice, but that's just because it was poorly done. Nice pantsu shots of megumin would have been nice, but the saggy bouncing tits we got instead were dreadful.

Fanservice doesn't help or hurt my scores unless fanservice is one of the purposes of the show. If a drama like Code Geass has fanservice, 99% of the time it doesn't bother me. If an ecchi is boring, and doesn't take any creative risks fanservice-wise, I'll rate it low. My highest rated anime with fanservice are Bakemonogatari, Motto To LOVE-Ru, and Nanatsu no Taizai because they were all-around good.

If the shows are ecchi based, then I score it based on whether it's useful or pointless to the 'actual plot'. If the shows are comedy driven then the fanservice shouldn't be phoned in or used in general cliched ways.

Take Seikon no Qwaser for example, I gave it a 9 because it's use of fanservice and nudity was a part (in a way) to the concept of the show. No matter how ludicrous it was. Plus, a show where people fight and have their powers based on an element of the periodic table was a really ingenious concept.

Going back to the infamous and incestious toothbrushing scene in Nisemonogatari, I can see why that installment in the Monogatari series is pretty low in the ratings compared to other installments as it is essentially all fanservice. But hey, I liked it a lot and is one of the reasons why Karen is my 2nd fave character of the series.

Shows that excel in fanservice because of perverted MC's like Highschool DxD and Sora no Otoshimono made the respecting shows a pleasure to watch as it leaves every male viewer envious because of the non-stop ecchi escapades.

It decreases my score. Unless the anime is entirely ecchi, then... I usually score it a 6/10 or 7/10, maybe a bit less. But if there's a perfectly good anime and ecchi just takes over near the end (like Ben-to!), of course my rating will go down. What a waste.

Like if you take out all the nudity out of klk half of the aspects that made the series great is now gone.
The lack of clothing on Ryuko plays an integral role in her coming-of-age story, íe coming to terms with who she is and wearing it on her sleeves.

It can increase a score, highschool of the dead for example I rated a 7 because it was fun, it most likley would have been less fun if there was no fanservice, and probably would have a lower score.
Usually though it decreses a score, like for me the mongatari series ould have been far better without it, and sometimes it's just too ridiculous to be entertaining (Thinking of Fairy tail here)

EDIT: Oh yeah, kill la kill is one that is definitely better with fanservice.
