This episode's pyre imagery wins the ep for me. That and the last scene.

The last two episodes made a tough choice for me between an 8 and a 9 for the whole series, but Aoi Bungaku had its weaker moments, too, so I'm giving it a strong 8. After all, it's been a treat to watch something different from what the mainstream offers.

Holy fucking shit. That burning of Mitsuki is so damn artistic as hell. I think this is Madhouse's visual masterpiece so far and that art during the end was....oh by Thor's thundering hammer.

If i were to say what story that i like the most it would be:

Kokoro
Run, Melos!
Hell Screen
No Longer Human
In The Forest

I enjoyed No Longer Human and Run, Melos! the best.

Spider thread and Hell's Screen were ok, but I didn't really get much out of them.

Kokoro was enjoyable, but felt like it was missing something.

In the Forest was horrible and completely devoid of enjoyment.

Overall, 8/10. Glad I watched this.

This was a very interesting series to watch. Truly some arcs I enjoyed a little better. A couple I did not understand fully.

No Longer Human - 6.5
(While I enjoyed the concept, I believe I missed the overall message here)
In The Forest - 4
(This one I did not like. It was predicable)
Kokoro - 8
Run, Melos! - 10
(This is the only one I really enjoyed)
Spiders Thread - 6
Hell Screen - 7

It was a series of mixed highs and lows for me. Well worth the watch though.

I really liked this series, I'd want to see more like it. It got me to start reading books again (well, and finally I won't have assigned reading at school). I liked that each arc had a unique animation and art, I especially liked this in Run, Melos!

My Ratings

No Longer Human: 9/10
In The Forest: 6/10
Kokoro: 8.5/10
Run, Melos!: 10/10
Spider Thread: 8/10
Hell Screen: 7.5/10

This series made an impact on me, since there are not many like it. Pretty depressing stuff. I've already ordered No Longer Human and plan to maybe try the others as well, so looking forward to that. I will give this either a 9 or 10.

One of the best anime shows I've watched so far. That said, I still can't give the entire thing a 10/10 even though I feel like I really want to. Why? Because of In The Forest. That arc just wasn't all that great to me. It had a few moments, but that's it.

Favourite arcs ended up being: Run, Melos!, No Longer Human, and Kokoro.

No Longer Human: 8/10 Solid story, but quite depressing.
In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom: 3/10 All over the place. Voice acting didn't match.
Kokoro: 6/10 I felt like I should've enjoyed it more but I didn't really get into it.
Run, Melos!: 8/10 Mainly for the beautiful art/animation. I think I liked this one the most.
The Spider's Thread:5/10 Predictable.
Hell Screen:6/10 The imagery at the end was gorgeous, but I can't say the same for the story.

Overall a solid 7. I felt that Osamu Dazai's works were portrayed best, while some of the other arcs were a bit lacking. Most of them were unique in presentation, which I liked, but it was difficult to see any serious development.

I liked this story.

The voice acting for Yoshihide was pretty piss poor though.

Seeing the emperor burn in the inferno was satisfying to watch.

I was on Yoshihide's side until he became so obsessed with painting that he didn't even care that Mitsuki died in the fire and only cared about painting an interpretation of hell. Glad he died.

Decent story. None of the stories I found particularly great. They were too difficult to understand to completely enjoy.

Overall this anime is a 6/10. I will probably be rewatching this one eventually just so I can understand it a bit more.

My rating for each story

No Longer Human: 10/10
I'm really into this genre.. was pretty impressive, caught me in the very first ep.

In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom: 7/10
In my view this arc didn't fit with the other series, but I have to say the art/songs was amazing, I'd give it a 5 if it wasn't by this.

Kokoro: 8/10
Different points of view is a interesting plot

Run, Melos!: 9/10
Wow this one had me weepy the whole second ep, the way it was depicted I'm still speechless.

The Spider's Thread: 7/10
Hell Screen: 8/10
I don't have much to say about this 2 stories, only that both have entertaining plots (and I really love this colorful scenery)

I gave it a 9 and put it in my fav list, I really enjoyed the show.

To the people giving No Longer Human a low score while giving Kokoro a high one...seriously?
No Longer Human + Run, Melos are truly the ones that stand out in this series, with Hell Screen and Kokoro coming in at second, the rest are pretty boring.

No Longer Human (10/10)
In The Forest, (5/10)
Kokoro (7/10)
Run Melos (9/10)
Spider's Thread (4/10)

A decent finish to this anthology series, however, throughout most of the stories I strongly felt that these were just anime adaptations of well-known novels, hence the plot was not explained very well. I believe that if you know the story beforehand, watching an animated version of it is entertaining, however, for new viewers some episodes might seem lacking.

For example, The Spider's Thread episode went like this: a bad guy (who couldn't be a more obvious villain with that constant evil smirk and red pupils) goes on random killing sprees for no reason (okay, the reason is that he's bad), then he is injured and goes into hiding, then talks to a spider (and utters some totally out-of-character bullshit that even a spider's life cannot be recklessly taken - when he recklessly kills humans all the time), then gets caught, executed and sent to hell for his bad deeds. And in hell he suffers, and rightfully so, when suddenly a spider's thread lowers down for him from above. Overjoyed, he climbs it in hopes of escaping the hell, but of course other poor souls want to escape, too. Since the thread cannot hold all of them, it starts breaking, and Kandata starts kicking the others off, but the thread still breaks. Aaaaand that's it. After watching this episode I was seriously in doubts whether the novel that it was based on was really a masterpiece - as the plot seemed quite shallow and straightforward. Then I read The Spider's Thread on MAL, which goes like this:

The Buddha Shakyamuni chances to notice a cold-hearted criminal suffering in Hell. But this criminal did perform one single act of kindness in not stepping on a spider in a forest. Moved by this selfless act, Shakyamuni takes the silvery thread of a spider in Paradise and lowers it down into Hell, but it falls upon the criminal to seize the opportunity and pull himself out - if he can.

... SO WHY WAS THIS STORY reduced to a simple, 'bad guy gets what he deserves' story? There was literally NO hint of the spider being Buddha whatsoever. It could have been much, much more.

Overall, Aoi Bungaku Series definitely had some strong episodes, but also a share of poorly executed ones. My final ratings are the following:

No Longer Human: 8
In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom: 4
Kokoro: 9
Run, Melos!: 9
The Spider's Thread: 2
Hell Screen: 7

Overall: 7/10

It started with an interesting question, essentially asking what it means to be an artist—or any kind of worker—when you have to appease the requests of foolish or corrupt authority. How much of ourselves must we sacrifice for them to survive? Then it takes this question and engulfs it in style and flames. The lack of subtlety was jarring.

No Longer Human: 8/10
In the Forest: 4/10
Kokoro: 8/10
Run, Melos!: 9/10
The Spider's Thread: 6/10
Hell Screen: 5/10

Average: 6.66 (ha...)

I'm going to pretend In The Forest and Hell Screen didn't happen and give it an 8 overall.

Hmm nice ending, didn't expect that XD

Ningen Shikkaku 10/10 (GG dem feels)
In the woods: 5/10 (That girl is already suspicious from the beginning for not even having goosebumps or crying seeing her hubby killed, and some comedy are misplaced atlough I laugh at the rest of it)
Kokoro: 7/10 (We need Ojousan's POV too, now she looks like the villain :(, and also seems weird to have K suicide after talking with the owner on ep 7 while it's after going outside on ep 8, but that's okay tho)
Hashire Melos 8/10 (I failed to get the feel as much as others, perhaps because of it's untold on why did he break his promise)
Spider Thread: 8/10 (Good story for kids, that hell is bizzare tho)
Hell Screen: 9/10 (Didn't expect that kind of ending :P)

So overall I'll give this series 8/10

Well, talk about the lengths people will go to create their masterpiece. This fits perfectly in the end of Aoi Bungaku; this one dwells on the creation of a "masterpiece", works that have been shared to us via this anime.

That last scene was enthralling to the very end. I love the usage of blue in it as well, as it illustrates the sheer bliss the artist experiences despite the immense suffering being shown to us, which is obviously represented in red. Initially opposed to his daughters execution, despair immediately turns into elation as he watches his vision unveil itself right before his eyes, while also doing away with that arrogant son of a bitch too. It's definitely one of the highlights of this entire series.

Since everyone is assigning arbitrary ratings to each story, I will indulge in doing the same:

No Longer Human: 9/10
In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom: 6/10
Kokoro: 6/10
Run, Melos: 11/10. I'm not even kidding.
Spider's Thread: 5/10
Hell's Screen: 8/10

Overall: Solid 8. I enjoyed every story, and it was excellent talking to myself over how each story proved to be masterful in it's own way. I would love to see another series like this.

No Longer Human - 9/10 - the main character was the best thing about this arc. betrayed by caretaker and a friend, abused, dehumanized; he was acting the way people around wanted him to yet no revealing his emotions and pain. truly 'disqualified from being human' no only by others but also by himself.

In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom - 7/10 - it was interesting to see how they used grotesque for mc's imaginative perception of live and his obsessions (the scene with people taking photos of him was the finest)

Kokoro - 10/10 - i liked it so much because of the idea to confront two points of view which gave the story much needed depth and showcased main characters' personalities and emotions. (i actually felt bad for Kei in the second episode)

Run, Melos! - 10/10 - the arc of 'betrayal' and and love. i liked how they handled it. the story begins and ends with the same line about 'who is hurting more the person who's waiting or the one who makes someone wait'. they both did, the actor and the writer.

The Spider's Thread - 7/10 - i find this episode very simple and that what makes it good. kandata doomed himself. + the art was great

Hell Screen - 7/10 - wasn't my favorite. i liked the idea of art consuming the artist and bringing death on him. + his final masterpiece was the brightest part of the episode.

overall i really enjoyed this series. the stories and characters were great, and their psychology and emotions made perfectly visible.

The soundtrack have been really great for the entirety of the show, but for this last episode it was particularly stellar.

One thing I don't get about the story : Why did the painter felt he needed to see someone burn alive to finish his painting ? He saw the murderer from the previous episode die with fire, he even drew him in his final painting, so why wasn't it enough for him ? Did it have to be someone he cared about in order to experience pain and sadness, and feeling what it's like to be in hell ?

I really liked "No longer human" and "Kokoro". And this final one was very good too. It's hard to rate this show, I don't know. There were a couple of stories that were nothing especial. I don't know the original novels either, so maybe the judgement should apply to them in some cases. Anyway, it was really enjoyable at times, I'm glad I watched it.

And the sentence "Masterpiece is in blue" I think it refers to blue as sadness. Common word with same meaning in many jazz/blues songs.

Finished the Aoi Bungaku Series. Final verdict 7,3/10. Stories:

- No Longer Human (8/10): 4 very good episodes about disconnection from society, suicide and guilt.
- In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom (5/10): weird adaption of a classic novel revolving around fear
- Kokoro (7/10): A two sided story about love, egoism, guilt and the pain of a broken heart.
- Run, Melos! (8/10): 2 fantastic episodes, very cinematic, intertwining reality, past and a theater play into one string of plot.
- A Spider's Thread: Good episode of a tale about egoism, realisation and self-reflection. Quite brutal for a kid's story. :o
- Hell Screen (8/10): Brilliant episode about artistic vision, sacrifice and terror of an empire, all well visualised.

All in all I only didn't like the second arc. Everything else was very interesting and well adapted for the short amount of time they had imho.

Wow, just wow. How can this be adapted from a children's book?
That just goes beyond me.

'Masterpieces are blue'
Blue represents the emotion of sadness / tragedy, so Masterpieces make you feel the pain.

Blue is a royal color.

sorry but none. I spent quite a time on google about it, and the best explanation was this:

"The color blue symbolizes youth in Japan. These works of literature are forever young, in context, the title of this anime series is 'Timeless Japanese Classics'."

also, some fansubber translated that phrase as "the masterpieces are evergreen", which also makes the same point. in case anyone would look it up, i'm leaving this comment here.

btw I just finished the show and regretted for not having watched it for so many years. 10/10 a masterpiece.
