Do You Hate Dubs Collectively or Just The Bad Ones?

If a dub comes out, will you give it a chance or go "Ew, ew, EW! It's a stinking dub! Don't let me catch anyone using a clip from it on Youtube!"

I ask because there seems to be quite some hate for dubs collectively, a lot of people seem to have the viewpoint of the latter group I mentioned above. Making me believe they hate dubbing in general.

Bonus Question: OK, as you'll quickly realize with me: I AM OBSESSED WITH ANGEL BEATS! Dunno why, it's a big obsession with me. Why do people hate the dub so much? Justt curious, maybe I just never watched most of the episodes in Japanese? I only watched the 1st 3 in Japanese.

Personally I like Japanese voices but srill perfer dubs if I can watch'em legally.

I don't hate dubs

But badly dubbed anime is..

Actually I don't give a shit, not like I ever watch dub.

I do, however, watch dubs on youtube occasionally just to check them out, if they have good dub, I praise it, if the dub is bad, I don't comment on it.

If I feel the dub is okay, and I see people criticizing it, I'll tell them I find the dub okay. maybe throw in a compliment or 2 for several dub voices.

I remember coming across Clannad dub, and I really liked Kotomi's voice. While I didn't feel that her voice suited Kotomi, I liked her voice.

I don't say eww. I just don't watch it or have any inclination to watch it, as I've probably already watched the sub(which to me almost always has solid voices) and or would choose it over the dub anyways and just have no interest in watching something where the audio has been changed.

I have watched quite a few of my favorite anime in dub (Cowboy Bebop and the first quarter of FMA Brotherhood), and I can enjoy a good dub. While I prefer watching anime subbed, I will always try out the dub if I hear good things about it and sometimes it works for the better, other times not so much.

I dislike dubs when people have flat voices. I also dislike it a lot when women try to imitate how high pitched Japanese women (or voice actors) sound. So you get really unnatural and forced sounding voice acting for female characters a lot of the time. Also, a lot of characters are miscast. Like Ouma Shu from the Guilty Crown dub sounds like an adult. He's supposed to be 15.

I think one of the big problems though, is the actual animation itself. A lot of anime features dialogue with characters having fairly static and blank faces, with only the mouth moving (as opposed to other facial features also being animated like you'll find in Disney animation).

So when I actually hear them speaking something that I can understand on my own, it just adds another layer of "this feels wrong", because there's just a static expression that wouldn't exist in real life. When I hear it in Japanese, I don't understand it, so even though its still the same, I don't have that immediate and instant connection and I don't notice how weird it actually feels.

Also, awkward pauses and line delivery because of the challenge of synchronizing the mouth animation to the translated dialogue doesn't help.

But I like some dubs. HOTD's dub was amazing. Baccano's dub is amazing. I want to watch Black Lagoon dubbed.

You can't go wrong with the Black Lagoon dub. It fits perfectly for that anime due to being more Western-style action than Japanese.

I'll never understand the dub hate. Sure a lot are bad and most are inferior to the original voices but I'm pretty sure most everyone would prefer to understand what's being said more than they enjoy reading subs. Hell I don't mean to be racist but a good amount of Japanese voices sound the sane to me (most likely since I can't understand what they're saying)

Only bad ones. Nowadays mos tof dubs are of a good quality and some shows are better watched dubbed for immersion into setting (Bebop, Baccano!, FMA:B, for example)

In some times it even fixes some dialogue problems(certain sexist lines in FMA:B are replaced with far more fitting ones)

Bad dubs are bad, but dubs overall depend on situation and quality.

The people who do apparently stand by some bullshit principle that dubs are inherently inferior simply by not being the original (or not Japanese). That's probably not why they hate dubs collectively but it sure looks like it from where I'm standing.

I only hate the bad ones, of course. You hardly find bad dubs nowadays anyway, so it's getting more and more apparent that people who hate dubs collectively or have a kneejerk reaction to post a copypasta "ugh, a dub" on YouTube are just trolling to get attention.

Also I generally don't watch dubs simplay because I watch shit as it's currently airing - so there's no dubs available

If it's something that's been completed for ages, I'll give the dubs a shot while switching between the two (ENG/JAP) and usually stick with subtitles x.x;

I'm not a fan of English dubs, since I'm not familiar enough with the language and sometimes I miss a line or two, especially when the characters have strong accents (Baccano or the black guy from Bebop).
However, if I get the rare chance to watch an anime in Italian (I'm italian, btw), I'll do it, even if it means shitty voice acting + terrible video/sound quality.
Most of the time, a terrible dub is still better than subtitles, and otaku really go overboard with this dub/sub war.

all the Japanese voice actors sound like

a) they can be placed in 7-10 different categories of voices

b)REALLY weird.

But i do like subbs because... well i don't actually understand exactly what is coming out of their mouths so it just sounds like a collection of awesome sounding noises (Like how they pronounce their character symbols)

And because I watch subs, I've recognized the seiyuus which is pretty cool. I sit there for a good 5 minutes when someone speaks and I have this look in my eyes, have my moment, then blurt out something like "OMG THATS IT. ITS KAMIYA HIROSHI" and is2g it's the most satisfying feeling ever.

I'm sure the subs vs. dubs debate will start raging again...

Some badly localized series that I watched many years ago soured me a bit on dubs, but to be fair, the dubs weren't the real problem; the heavy editing was the real defect in these series. Battle of the Planets, the heavily edited version of Gatchaman that ran in the United States in the late 1970s, is the example that I best remember. These days, I always watch subs. Some series aren't available dubbed, of course, but even for those who are, I'm simply used to watching the original and reading the subtitles. I'm not opposed to dubs, and if I hear of one that gets a lot of praise, I might watch it. If a dub truly is bad, I would prefer not to have to experience it (unless it is terrible to the point of being funny). And I truly hate badly localized, heavily edited series.

I am a very fast reader - at least in English - so subtitles aren't much of a distraction for me. I'm also an avid fan of opera, which always has subtitles (or supertitles when seen live in the theater). Even if the opera is sung in English, the style of singing makes it hard to understand, so subtitles are often necessary. Having seen many operas has definitely made me accustomed to subtitles.

Not everybody reads as quickly as I do; for people who are a little slower, subtitles might be more of a distraction. I notice this when I watch something with French subtitles. Since I'm not quite fluent in French, I read it more slowly and have to think about it, so the subtitles can be distracting. It is good language practice, however, so I make a point of occasionally watching an anime series with French fansubs. Maybe I should look for something with a French dub.

If I could do it, I'd read raw manga scans or import original Japanese volumes.... but I can't read Japanese, so I have to make do with the next best alternative---> English translations.
