Also don't forget the Queen Millennia movie. Call me crazy, but I liked that one even more than Arcadia of My Youth and the GE999 movies, quite a bit more dramatic stuff and really intense. It felt like watching a fictional sci-fi take on the book of Genesis (flood) or Revelations. Really epic stuff. LE seems to have seriously been stalled on the second Harlock series since forever... |

Yeah, Millennia is also a awesome movie and can rival Arcadia of My Youth and Galaxy Express 999. But the thing about those two movies is that they have direct links between them, so is easier refering to them as a couple. Interesting take on Millennia, now that I think about it, it does resembles those biblical tales. Really epic stuff indeed. :D |

I finally watched Laputa and it really was great, like everyone always says. The robots, the airships and granny Dola... it was fantastic. I'd say Laputa replaced Castle of Cagliostro as my favorite Miyazaki film. |

Really epic stuff indeed. :D Hehe, yeah that and (I think I remember talking to you about this, or maybe it was someone else), but it was up there with the epicness of Ideon Be Invoked for me, mainly because at times it almost felt like Tomino could have directed the second half of the movie. It had such an amazing build up and then suddenly it was just insanely dramatic stuff later on. Really did feel like it could have been an epic movie by Tomino without the mech's! But yeah, whoever directed it did a great job. I just hope LE does finish the series someday. Had such an amazing OST as well, definitely some crazy new age influences in there I'd say. At times it kind of reminded me of Blade Runner and even some classic SNES RPG's and such, though I guess that might seem odd. But yeah, AoMY and the GE999 movies had incredible soundtracks as well. It seems like you can't go wrong at all when it comes to the music in the older Matsumoto shows, Yamato is the same case! Speaking of all this stuff, I still need to check out the other GE999 movie sequels, which I still hear are pretty good too. |

Catching up on Dougram! It's either my ultra fanboyism for Ryosuke Takahashi's old stuff, or this show is just so addicting. Every time I let episodes stock up for a bit, it feels so easy to burn through several in a row whenever I watch it. Feels like the perfect series to pickup after finishing RoV recently as well. |

But you know Rob that Matsumoto has a very loose link between his movies and his series so you can't connect them so good in your mind. We can't have everything, can we? And for not being totally off topic let me say what I'm currently watching. I watched the first 2 movies of the original Gundam yesterday and I'm gonna finish it in a while with the 3rd and last movie. Very nice compilation of the series. I'm rewatching Hokuto no Ken and now I'm in the 38th episode (of the 43 in total) of the Hokuto no Ken 2 season. I'm finishing it today so since I've watched it in the past thought I would mention it. OK the words can't describe this series!!! Basically I'm reffering to Hokuto no Ken which has an amazing post apocalyptic story with so many interesting characters. Hokuto no Ken 2 is living in the shadow of it's ancestor...... Not bad but not great as the first series. |

Yeah, I also believe we talked about it in the past Echelon, on one of our endless Queen Millennia movie praises. :D Echelon said: I went to seach on ANN and Unfortunately the director worked on a few stuff, some more known titles like mazinger Z and UFO Robo, but most of them unknown and lost anime from the seventies. A pity though. I'd still would like to watch some of those oldies like for example something that was made on the seventies and is called "Lupin versus Holmes", just can't be bad.whoever directed it did a great job. It seems like you can't go wrong at all when it comes to the music in the older Matsumoto shows, Yamato is the same case! It is totally New Age music. It comes very nostalgic to me because that particular eletronic ambient music was pretty popular in the eighties and having grown up on that era certainly brings back special emotions. It's indeed absolutely stunning and I love it. I listen to it pretty often. Echelon said: Definitely a must watch. The third movie was made in the nineties and is almost a quick watch, but it's still good. It's based on a manga sequel to the original series. I bought the first volume only. I just watched Blazing Transfer Student, the OVA Gainax would rather forget about, and it was probably one of the funniest things I've seen for a while. Not sure how oldschool it really is, but it certainly captures the oldschool style. I've started Maison Ikkoku now, it seems to be the right mix of cute, heartwarming and hilarious for me. |

Oh man, nice timing. I just finished it a few weeks ago myself. Quite the epic! I thought the last 10 or so episodes were easily LOGH tier stuff, soooo good. I see you're (chugging along perhaps? lol...) watching Ideon there Anakin... I know Rob's a fan and I personally didn't have much of an issue with the series, but I can definitely say it's more than worth it for Be Invoked! Such an epic movie, the budget was much higher than the show as well, so better music, visuals, etc, very nice. It actually made me kind of wish all those old 80's mecha shows had movie film conclusions. |

I haven't seen the 2 Ideon movies unfortunately but I plan to do it after the series. It's a good series though so far. I'm so glad that there are people that can appreciate the good old series! |

Heh, yup. If you ask me the pacing (seems to be the biggest complaint for Ideon), to me, pretty much felt no different from some other older sci-fi shows like Yamato or Harlock. The characters in these shows are just constantly flying around space and trying to survive, I didn't think Ideon was any different or worse. Granted, Harlock has excellent characters. In Ideon you kind of want to bitch slap everyone... but I was just really interested in seeing what the mysteries of the Ide were and things like that. But yeah, I do think Be Invoked is Tomino's best ending. Maybe simply because it's very conclusive ... not quite the case for just about any of his other big shows, lol. I agree that Oscar is by far one of the best female characters I've ever seen. I personally really liked Rosalie a lot too, she went through so much hell throughout the show. Were you compelled to look up real info on the French Revolution afterwards? Heh, I was really impressed with how accurate it was and the fictional characters like Oscar and Andre' etc, fit in SO well it's almost hard to believe they weren't real historical people themselves. And on a random note, yeah Balsa was awesome! But I gotta hand it to Motoko when it comes to good Production IG ... hehe. Really wish we had more good, strong headed female leads like these. It's like seriously, when there are characters like this they turn out to be REALLY awesome! So more would be great. |

I'm currently watching the Utsunomiko OVA and it has Tohru Furuya, Eiko Yamada, and Banjo Ginga in it and the the three of them do a wonderful job on the characters they play, pure manliness in Tohru Furuya and Banjo Ginga's characters. Nice to see there are other people who appreciate Ideon, too. And Rose of Versailles is a really amazing series too, shoujo title has ever made such an impression on me as RoV did. And so that this won't be completely off-topic, I finished Gundam today. The series just got better and better as the end neared. The concept of newtypes wasn't explored as much as it could've, as it came up so late in the series. Well, maybe you'll learn more of it in the sequels... Guess it's time for some Zeta Gundam now. |

Someone released the first episode of Utsunomiko OVA last year. It was pretty entertaining, I hope we'll see more of it someday. I watched Body Jack. Man, I haven't seen a echii anime so borderline in a quite a while. Yes, this was near hentai. The story itself was funny, it was about the usual pervert young man that has a lot of fantasies about women and specially a classmate, then he manages to get a machine that leaves him in a "out of the body" experience, his body stays in his room but his spirit/aura/whatever wanders around as if it was a ghost and can even possess people. You can easily imagine what he does with this new power, but things don't turn for the better. I tell you folks that this OVA had quite the fucked up development, be warned. Sensitive and easily offended people, stay away. |

The politics and underlying storyline were pretty laughable and I thought the last episode was a pretty big borefest... but other than that, it was way better than I was expecting. Excellent action. I've seen around that most people are of the same idea, that Dirty Pair TV is better than the OVA. I have to check them myself someday. Yamato and Macross are timeless classics. There's no need of more words to describe them. I ve watched Roots Search. Another sci fi oldie inspired on the classic Alien movie. We had the classic stage of the ship in space with a small crew, one of them a telepath and then the mysterious alien comes. Pretty cheesy and all, we got the usual dumb characters, but the idea behind it wasn’t bad, I think the OVA failed immensely creating the proper atmosphere for the thrill. The idea of a alien coming to give divine punishment was pretty straightforward and unusually original coming directly from the cheesiness of the eighties. Aliens+Religion=WoW A pity no one took this concept further in this manner, Id like to see a proper development of this. Imagine, a follow up title like “The killer preaching aliens from outer space” That’d be awesome. Anyway, I didn’t really felt bothered by the lack of an proper ending there, the characters weren’t good enough for me caring on whatever came to happen with them. I think if I had watched this one in the nineties I would have loved it. I gave it a 6/10 |

I liked the 10 episode Dirty Pair OVA just a little more than the TV series. Maybe I'm in the minority here. But it has been forever since I've seen the TV series and there is a possibility I'm enjoying this style of anime more now than 10 years ago. |

You probably told me this before Hisoka, but does the TV series actually have a bigger overarching story behind it all? I can imagine the more Dirty Pair I watch though the more I'll dig it. Probably one of those things where once the characters click, it'll be real fun. I can't help but imagine the Dirty Pair stuff is probably comparable to Cobra, City Hunter, Bubblegum Crisis, etc... stuff I mostly loved. Just a hunch though. |

Watched today California Crisis. First thing to notice is the same character design from LOGH and also the great animation style used. The story had legs to move but something just didn't work there. We never got to know what the alien thing was about and what happened after the events. I recall that after the first fall of the car of the main guy on a ravine, the car worked just nicely as if he never had fallen from such an height. I want a car like that. Yes, that was a huge flaw. I did enjoy the characters, they behaved like their age. And didn't found any problems with other characters except the bad guy at the end. He was supposed to be one of the big bad guys, not a helicopter driver. The script had major flaws but the animation and artwork were excellent. I found the girls eyes strange to look at, maybe they exageratted there, other than that, it was all pretty cool to watch. 7/10 |

Just watched the old Appleseed OVA, that was definitely pretty awesome! Though... extremely weird ending, I felt like I was rooting for the bad guys... apparently? Weird stuff. Shame it wasn't a full blown series back then or something. Also watched the first episode Kimagure Orange Road and I'm curious, can anyone double check and comfirm if the [A-Et] is kind of choppy, video quality wise? This is a weird issue because I know it's old and the rip doesn't look incredible or anything, but if this is just how the release is than I'm totally fine with that... what I'm worried about here is that I've been having some random issues with videos with this new computer (Win7) I setup a week ago or so, so I can't tell if it's my computer making it extra laggy or not. I also can't seem to get the Dirty Pair OVA [Henshin] release working, both MPC and WMP crash right away. I wonder if it has something to do with the subs not being encoded into the video, for some reason, never had this problem on XP. I haven't really downloaded any codecs or anything since I've heard that's not necessary (and actually not recommended) for Win7... but yeah. So yeah, is the KOR release just choppy in general? Or I'm having more issues here. |

I knew you would love Appleseed. It's such a great classic. Now it's time for Dominion and Black magic perhaps. I have redownloaded KOR in those files and they work just fine, I think they're pretty good rips, the ones I have before were VHS rips or TV rips so these were a major improvements. Good files then. Maybe it's a Win 7 issue. that's bad, I was thinking of changing my XP for that one too. Well, you can always change back to XP right? |

After seeing SDF Macross, it ranks as my #1 favorite in the mecha anime genre as it incorporated a well-told romance within the story. So the series did a great job in that department. It also did a fantastic job in telling a gripping human drama. Macross was one of the few animes that drew emotional impact for me. |

starseeker said: Could a graphics driver issue or an issue with your player. Those are all up to date I believe. This is where it gets real weird... if you're familar with Win7, the video effects/enhancement program "Aero" somehow got turned off for awhile and I noticed this is when I had MAJOR issues, like tons of screen tearing in all videos, etc. But I got this on again and that fixed a lot it. The weird thing here is that some videos work great and some don't. Right after watching that first episode of KOR, I watched the Appleseed movie and didn't have any problems. No idea what's going on. Sounds like it's an issue with my computer then. Well, I know for sure the onboard video for this thing really sucks... maybe getting a read card in here would help this a lot (sadly it's a slim machine so I'm seeing only low-profile cards will fit, but I've heard this thing could run a GeForce 9500GT pretty well. Those sounds pretty good). Rob: One thing I really liked about it was the music! Heh, so old school late 80's/early 90's music there. Fun stuff. The budget seemed a bit odd though... like it looked like it were part of a TV series that never was or something, it was odd. Noticed a lot of "breaks" too, maybe it was a multi part OVA originally? lol. I don't know if I have any interest in checking out the second new movie (hear it's worse than 2004's), but I really am hoping the new TV series becomes a reality. The world of anime could use some new good sci-fi... |

Never thought about it, I think it was one of those cases where the OVA was made to make more people aware of the manga or something, I don't remember anymore the background stories around it. It would indeed have been far better if they had done a TV series at the time rather than nowadays. Masamune new stuff is pretty far from where he was 20 years ago.
