Macross is now up for vote. Decide if it will sing its way to Enlightenment or lose the space war against the Relations.

RULES:
1. You can only vote for a title if you've finished watching/reading it. You must’ve read or watched at least 60% of the published content for unfinished titles. There might be exceptions for very long finished titles – they are decided on a case by case basis, but usually amount to more than half of the published content.

2. Write your vote at the very top of your comment.

3. Below your vote, give a substantial explanation to back it up. It doesn't have to be lengthy; it just needs to cover the points you want to make.

4. If you have only read/watched the adaption/source material of the respective nominee, please state so in your post.

5. It will take a minimum of 5 votes for either Enlightenment or Relations to make it into any of the lists as an anime (3 votes for manga). If it fails to reach that, it will be deemed Unremarkable.

6. The votes for Enlightenment will have to outnumber the votes for Unremarkable and Relations for it to be included in our list; the same goes for Relations. If it fails to reach that, it will be deemed Unremarkable.

7. Behave yourself. We accept discussions and debate, not flaming and incoherent fanboy/fangirl behavior.

8. The fate of the poll will lie in the hands of the officers if it turns out that there are more first time voters than regulars or the series cannot be gauged by both voting and discussions.

This poll with end in 7 days! BEGIN!!!!!!!!

But goddamn, am I the only one here who's actually seen this ? ^^

Anyway, looks like it's not going up, and I have an assignment due tomorrow, and more due over the next week, so I can't really justify taking the time to write a detailed review. Will re-edit it in the off-chance a number of people come and vote for it.

Option 1 - It is made of excellence and deserves to be on our Enlightenment list

SDF Macross stands out as one of the best 80s mecha shows, which in itself is quite impressive considering the abundance of them and the amount of quality titles. It is highly unique and memorable, and excels in nearly everything it sets out to do. I can think of few series that should be considered more "enlightening" to the 80s mecha world than SDF Macross. And honestly, it is appealing to more than simply mecha fans and is remembered as one of the best 80s anime series period.

The music is fantastic, there are likeable and memorable characters, awesome mecha/fighter pilot action, and really a nice story to go along with it too. Although at first it seems to just be a simple comedy and it was originally a Gundam parody, I think it creates an involving story about how alien races might see human interaction and society, and be completely flustered and confused by some of our actions. I wouldn't go as far as calling it a social commentary or something, but there is definitely thought behind it, and that sets the show away from many of its contemporaries.

Visually it is admittedly rough on the eyes, even for the time. Animation is often choppy and it just kind of looks plain and cheap sometimes. Some people may find it a little bit too goofy, and some of the characters can be annoying in order to facilitate the drama. But beyond that it's really an excellent show and a staple of the genre.

Option 1- It is made of excellence and deserves to be on our list.

A classic among classics, Macross revolutionized the mech and to a lesser extent the romance genre and contributed greatly to the history of anime as whole (arguably).
The animation, as Kellhus said is really rough on the eyes, but the characters and music more than compensated for it. It deals with some pretty fantastic themes and asks many moral questions about what it means to coexist with aliens, which was amazing despite me seeing the themes handled before.

On a side note, I'm glad I managed to finish it by the time the poll was over. Pheeew.

I have not watched this series becuase I'm not a big fan of mecha genre.

All the mecha series I have seen so far:

Evangelion: because it was on TV

Macross Frontier: Just bought the HDMI cable for TV and I wanted something with good animation to test it.

Bokurano & Ryvius: Really good plot besides the mecha. I didn't cared about the robot at all.

I still think it is probably a must see for Mecha fans as it was the first of the series. But not for myself

If I'm not mistaken, according to the rules this must have gotten at least 8 votes, 5 of them upvotes, to get polled. Yet pretty much no one has anything to say on it, with one of the only people that voted on it being someone that just watched it. Kind of leaves me wondering what happened to the 8 people that voted on it or whatever.

@Kellhus, I'll make a post for it in the club. Let's see if anyone replies. It also bums me out when stuff like this happen.

Option 2

It's a good anime but nothing else, it just doesn't have anything that makes it stand out, it's good in all aspects, but I don't feel it excelled in anything at all.

The fact that it's from the 80s is not reason enough to consider it enlightening, it might have revolutionized the genre or whatever, but that doesn't mean you should go right now and watch it, being the first of something doesn't make it the best thing ever.

Sure, it's a must-see for mecha fans, but that's another matter.

Option 1

Even though it hasn't managed to scrape the doors of my special layer in terms of quality, it is still getting close to touching it. Macross's story is well done and little time is wasted on its development, with good characters that have a sense of intelligence and resolve across the board, it is a definite candidate for classic anime series from teh 90s.

With 3 votes for Enlightenment and 1 vote for Unremarkable, this poll is deemed Invalid. The anime can be renominated in the Anime Enlightenment Camp at a later time. Thank you for voting.

Well this was a depressing poll. How did this get nominated if nobody's seen it?

So there's no reason for nominating a series that you feel is worth it just because other people weren't around to vote? That's a pretty lame thing to say if you ask me.

Oh and fyi, I got about halfway into Macross and I would have voted option 1 if I was able to finish in time. Seems Black Sabbath would have too. So therefore it would have actually passed if we just had more time.

If it had gotten closer to passing, I would've voted option 2.

And this right here. Where are the fans that voted for this to get a poll in the first place?

I'd rather it be deemed unremarkable rather than the poll itself being 'Invalid'. Though by all counts it seems Macross was very likely to pass if given a bit more time. Perhaps in the future you might vote when you can to help set an example for other members?

And of course some of the blame goes to the people who helped pass this in the first place but were nowhere to be found when it came time to actually vote on it. But as has been established, it's not like we'd force nominators to vote so that's the way it goes I guess..

My point is that there are many people who vote in favour of series and then disappear and never come back to the club when the time for polling comes. And by the way it's more like a general tendency of pushing series into polls for no reason (often it's something like" hey I want to discuss X series and see how it fares"), and some series just keep getting proposed even though the vast majority of us vote against (for example: Haruhi movie).
Sorry if that sounded like I was discouraging propositions but many recent polls did not have enough voters and some were deemed invalid which is something that shouldn't happen too often. If those people who supported the series in the enlightment camp would actually vote instead of vanishing among the hundreds of ghost members then we wouldn't even have this problem.

Can't we re-poll this? Many people here seem to have wanted to vote for option 1 if they knew. I know we're not allowed to nominate series for a while, but can't we make an exception for this?

Personally, I would be willing to make an exception for this since the polling ended not as unremarkable, but invalid. Or at least we could put the title back on the purgatory list (although I am not sure it could ever get 8 votes) since it's not like this would be a new nomination.

I am not saying this as an admin, however, it's just my standpoint as a member.

For the record I would also like to see Macross get another shot. The short time limit on the poll seems to have rendered it useless.

Personally, I'd rather see Mobile Suit Gundam on the list. As much as I enjoyed Macross, it's far from something enlightening. SDF Macross felt too much like Gundam x Ideon x Top Gun. If it gets re-polled, I'll probably vote for unremarkable. Unless the club's policy changes, which is unlikely. DYRL has more historical values, so it probably has a bigger chance to get on the list.

DYRL looks great, but picking it over the original would be kind of lunacy given how unremarkable it makes the story and characters. I don't understand how it has more historical value.
