Has there ever been an Anime series that depressed you?

And I don't mean just because you were sad to see it end.

I just finished it watching Watamote today, and now I feel quite depressed.

I've never before watched a slice of life series that is so monumentally bleak. And despite the occasional humorous parts, I think it hit a little too close to home as regards my teenage social experiences.

Still, I found it to be a decent series that approached the highschool genre from a rather unique angle. 7/10 - would let it depress me again.

So, anybody had similar experiences with any other series for whatever reason?

I'd say I'm a cheer person so not really depressed, but if I had to state an answer I'd say Stein's Gate . I really liked it though , 10/10

That's on my list of Anime to watch as soon as my college exams are over. So it's not exactly going to be a rollercoaster of rainbows and happiness?

Madoka Magica made me feel hollow inside. o.o

I was actually quite surprised to discover how much it effected me emotionally.

I'm actually really depressed right now. I started watching Nana a few days ago and usually it would have taken me 2 days to finish.. but I just can't watch the last 4 episodes because I'm scared of getting even more depressed, the story just makes me feel bad. Not because it is bad, I really like it.. I just feel so sorry for all the characters. Someone please help me because I don't want this series to remain on my 'Watching' list for the rest of my life xD

that's easy. Finish the last 4 episodes. Don't worry nothing bad will happen. Not as bad as horrible ast the manga at least.
The characters and their problems felt a bit too real which made me love that anime.

Have you already watched The Butterfly Effect (movie with Ashton Kutcher)? Steins Gate is the animated version of it.

Yeah I'll (have to) do that sooner or later xD I also like it because it seems so real but well, maybe it just gets to me too much

Like, I'm far from the most empathetic person in the world, but I just felt so sorry for Tomoko. Sure, she brings a lot of her troubles upon herself, but I found it very easy to relate to what she was going through at times - even though I'm a guy.

Well, we can start from classics, like Clannad, Angel Beats, Anohana or Hotaru no Haka, since most of anime fans felt some kind of depression, but I will go with Elfen Lied, which, even though is not that sad, nor is it that good, I just felt depressed from some scenes. Also, while this name will not be common on this kind of thread, Code Geass R2 had 2-3 scenes which made me wishing I never watched it in the first place. All of those shows are mentioned are good, for me at least.

NANA. The anime stopped at a critical point. Such an awesome story but the author hasn't written a new chapter in years and I fear it will never be completed :(

And thank God. If it had followed the manga, if I understand those events right, I would have taken up window jumping. The anime's ending was tough, but nothing like....that. Freaking loved that anime.

Rurouni Kenshin Reflection's ending left me feeling like an empty husk for weeks. For me Kenshin was like that picture perfect childhood hero to me, so to see him like that after having a certain image of him for 5 years...it was just...it's like a kid who worships Superman and then sees him smoking behind a building while pimping out Louis Lane and going "tough shit kid."

The only anime that left any sort of emotion after watching them were Shinsekai Yori & True Tears. To this day, and probably forever, I'll always grade True Tears as 1 and label it as one of the worst anime out there just because of that shitty ending. And Shinsekai Yori ... well, it was kind of depressing to see just how hard the anime hit the point with humans :/

Welcome to the NHK. I was 16 when I watched it, and of course, a weeb such as myself wouldn't be able to handle it. Especially when it got me thinking about bad past relationships.
