Not sure if this is the right place to create this thread, it's a question bout anime, a very situational one, but still not about a specific series.

What do you think is the anime with the best Mecha designs? So far I havn't seen a lot of Mecha anime, but from what I've seen, the EVAs in NGE are freaking frightening, their design is really amazing IMO. There was this specific scene (not spoiling) where Unit 01 bust out of that Shadow Ball, like it was being born... man that was creepy well made, gave me the chills.

Btw, if you've seen a lot of Gundam, which did you think was the best one?

The NGE movies have even better designs. Eva01 isn't lightpurple anymore. IMO Eva units have the best designs. No two units are the same, the 'faces' seem to display emotions..

I'd have to go with the Original Gundam. The RX-78 is a personal favorite, and the standard to which all mechas are measured, in my mind. Another personal favorite would have to be the Valkayries from Macross, and the Evas from Evangelion. Asuka's eva comes to mind. Also, I am not painfull aware of how badly I need to rewatch evangelion. >_>

Macross/Robotech by far... I don't know what you're definition of 'best' is exactly however the Veritech fighters in the series would be the most feasible/practical probability if companies decided to make mecha-style machines.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann had some nasty looking robots.

As for Gundam, IMO, they're all pretty mediocre, in design, if anything.

Valkyries from Macross Frontier frist come to mind. And Char Aznable's Hyaku Shiki is quite good looking though, IMHO,mayb cuz of its golden color. Gundam 00 mecha designs look cool thanks to modern graphics. And, here is my another fav mech, zeta gundam.

And Haman Karn's AMX-004 Qubeley is another one tat needs to be checked out.

Veritech Fighters from Macross/Robotech for sure. Some people may not consider them "mecha", but they have humanoid forms, so it's good enough for me.

I don't know if anyone here has played some of the Robotech video games, but they just feel a lot more natural and fun than piloting the Gundams in Gundam games.

Ah, it's my favourite too. I was a bit afraid of posting it, though. xD

My other favourite is Tachikoma, if it counts as mech.

Armored Trooper Votoms.
The bulky, utilitarian no-nonsense and slightly medieval inspired design of the Scopedog fits the gritty setting perfectly, while the Balarant Blockers and Fattys provide a suitably smoother and more futuristic contrast.

I just loved all the technical details, from the wheeled feet with their grip plugs to the way the legs bend when they airdrop and most of all, how they seemed so cheaply and realistically mass produced without too much physics defying flying or infinite beamspamming.
Their small sizes and relative brittleness made them seem more like cheap powered armours, making their pilots nothing but expendable infantry instead of the super powered emo kid type you usually see in mechas. The mecha were nothing but machines, and there were no magical prototype super mecha to win every battle. Chirico alone must have burned through a hundred Scopedogs through the series, which usually makes for much more interesting battles.

Hands Down the newest iterations of Armored Core.

I've yet to see anyone design mechs better, they are unrealistic in function, but realistic in design.

Seconding, thirding, fourthing or whatever, Evangelion's mecha. I just can't think of any better mecha design.
Also Gundam 00 has a really great mecha design, only the pink mecha is quite annoying.

This is difficult to say as that the mecha in the psp games look really good yet it looks horrible in the animes as that many of which had been redesigned. Generally, I will say that the UC-era mobile suits have good designs as that there are many to pick from whereas other mecha series should not have a few hundred designs.

The Zeus Gundam would like a word with you.

In all seriousness though, I'd go with Zeta Gundam(the series in general), Getter Robo and Escaflowne. Oh and G gundam.

Hmm, in terms of originality i'd have to go with NGE....the EVA units were awesome and scary at the same time. You cant really put gundam in the mix because when you look back on it....most of them will look very similar to the RX model besides the ones on Gundam 00. I also liked the Arm Slaves used in Full Metal Panic....almost realistic (the parts that aren't realistic are justified by some made up thing called black technology). By the way things are looking though, the NGE mechas are in the lead for best design. Ah and I just remembered (thanks to the guy above) Escaflowne. Those were some pretty slick mechas if a bit medieval in style.

I say Neon Genesis Evangelion. Any other mecha I've seen doesn't even compare to NGE. NGE's is the most destructive, threatening and fascinating IMO.

While I haven't watched enough Gundam to pass judgement on their mecha, from my first impressions they mostly look blocky and bulky.

Code Geass mecha were pretty good for a mecha-based series, but I find that the mecha from Full Metal Panic! and the Tachikomas, etc from GitS were the most unique, most "realistic" military type and the most practical. The mecha from Break Blade are worth looking at as well.

Btw NGE mecha aren't really mecha at all...they're alive, although the movie ones look more visually appealing.

RahXephon and Guymelef of Escaflowne for me. I thought the EVAs weren't mechas - not especially when 01 turned into something else.

Hoi-hoi san is the cutest mecha. Or not...mecha.
Jango is a mecha that uses Desert Eagles. Ha! Is that cool?

BTW, are Ridebacks and those used by Deaunan Knute mechas?
