Synopsis

Right as he is about to earn a promotion, a salaryman meets an untimely demise. Taking pity, a mysterious being grants him a second life in the land of Galdardia as a teenager. Choosing the name Luciel for himself and a role as a healer, the young man sets off for the nearby town of Merratoni. There, he learns that healers are a coveted resource, yet they often take advantage of others for monetary gain. Vowing to be different from other healers, he joins the local branch of the Healers' Guild and begins unlocking his magical potential.

After failing to save someone with his magic, Luciel is determined to get stronger. To improve his physical strength and hone his magic skills, he registers as an adventurer and takes rigorous training under Brod, the chief instructor of the Adventurers' Guild. Soon, Luciel gradually finds his way through Galdardia, gaining a reputation as a selfless healer who aids others regardless of expense.

Ironically good as a story that is not edgy, over the top, not about overpowered characters and not ecchi. I know I know, a shocker.

Despite the "status, skills" things and the premise of Isekai it feels more like a typical fantasy which is actually a good thing. MC doesn't get anything special going on for him and doesn't have any superpowers at any moment of the story and basically is just stubborn which helps him in the long run to overcome his lack of ability. In this regard it's a good slow burn story to follow along that culminates by the end of the season.

Great Cleric is a tough one to rate because I did want to like it. I like the art style, the character designs and the concept of an MC who is not OP from the start, but has to grind and train constantly to improve was appealing. Sadly, for me at least, the show took 8 weeks to get good and for most people it’s just not an investment they can make. Had this show come out the gate with the energy we saw in the final 4-5 episodes, this could have been a really good show.

I tend to believe the problems with Great ... Cleric were adaptation based since the Amazon reviews for the light novel are glowing. But, my God was this show dragged out. I’m all for training arcs and having an MC go through trials and tribulations to get stronger, but it gets to a point where it’s too much. In an anime where you only have 12 episodes to get people into a story, there’s only so much of the same repetitive stuff people can take. The training arc in this one could have been cut by several episodes and Luciel leaving the starter town to get the story going should have been done sooner. Once that does happen, I started enjoying the show a lot more. The whole capital arc is very fun, there’s some cool dungeon crawling, best girl gets introduced and the pacing gets much better at that point in general. It’s just way too much slog you have to go through to get there.

As a character, I’m kind of neutral on Luciel. He’s somewhat of a lovable idiot. Has some good moments where he makes you laugh and you root for him and then some where you just want to slap yourself in the face. He’s probably more developed in the books, but I wasn’t in love with the guy based on this anime. As I said before, I do like that he has to actually work for everything he’s got. He starts off purely able to heal before learning other combat skills and the show, for better or worse, takes its sweet time showing you how he acquires each and every one of those abilities. The side characters are pretty meh until blonde waifu gets introduced. At that point my interest was piqued. Sadly, again going back to the pacing, it took a long time for her to really become a part of the story. There’s a few others who get introduced at the end that are solid too.

Art is really solid in the anime. I’m a big fan of the bright colour palette, I like the designs as well. Animation is your generic powerpoint style, but it gets the job done. The production on the show is serviceable.

Really my main issue here just comes from the pacing. That alone just makes it hard for me to recommend this to people. I’d say give episode 1 a try and see how you vibe with it. That same pacing is going to stick around for like 4-5 episodes so if that’s something you can handle, go for it. Personally, I think I’ll give the Light Novels a chance at some point just to see how things were handled there. The world is interesting enough for me to want more of it, just not necessarily in anime form.

Interesting premise that promises a unique isekai story.

Ends up being typical and honestly- quite boring. I say this as an isekai fanatic; I love isekai, but the one thing I cannot stand is when the plot is the MC training continously with no development. The first 4 episode is the MC literally training and trying to level up while the plot moves an inch. Then he moves to another city, and now he has to clear a dungeon, and of course he does (with more training and small improvements). It's literally like watching someone play a video game. I'm here to watch an anime, not ... watch someone play a game. It's funny cause the anime tries to reference itself that it is indeed not a video game, but that 4th wall breaking did nothing but made me scoff even more. The training arc(s) makes no sense either. MC repeatedly gets his butt kicked, yet he is the only one in the world who has cleared the dungeon, which holds some of the strongest monsters. Yet he can't even beat a simple starting adventurer. Talk about inconsistency.

Is there anything good about this anime? There is actually- the goddamn story that the anime should've been concentrating on instead of watching the wimpy ass hero cry and train all the time. The story itself is actually super interesting. Healers have become corrput and are charging crazy amount of money for their services- in some instances if payment isn't ment then the patients become slaves. There's hints herre and there about the world which it works. Those parts are good. Then the anime goes right back to the MC like...doing boring stuff. If the anime had actually concentrated on the premise like the show described, I guarantee many fans would love it more. I mean, seriously that is an awesome story line. But instead every episode we get 15 minutes of the MC getting his butt kicked during training, then not learning absolutley nothing- then repeat again next episode, aaanddd continue the cycle until the finale.

Speaking of MC, how is he? I started off liking him. He is a total wimp. But I'm okay with that. I like alot of wimpy MC's. Deku from MHA is awesome. I loved Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul (seaosn 1 at least). But Luciel? He's wimpy, a cry baby, and well- that's pretty much his entire character. His motivation is all over the place. Money, girls, a place to live? Who knows. Sometimes it's everything. Sometimes it's nothing. The thing about wimps is that there needs to be a pay off. Like, there needs to be growth. There is no growth with Luciel. So to sum up- Luciel isn't bad- he's just super duper boring. How are the side characters? Forgetable. Not a single one stands out. They're all cardboard cut outs of every single side anime characters you've encountered before. The interactions are as basic as they come. That said- that's the least of this show's problem. The side characters do a solid job over all, even if I don't remember a single of their names. It's the lack of story that really brings down this show.

So should you watch this anime? I would say pass. I wanted to quit by episode 4 or 5, but at that point I had already invested too much time, so I had to see it through to see if there was any pay off in the end. And the answer is no.
