Oh boy, where to begin on this review...
Story: Basically it's another "Magical Girl" anime plot, a girl who has the ability to transform must fight this evil group of villains with her friends/comrades as a Super Sentai team. The unique part of this anime is that the Mermaids don't attack, they SING, and their songs are painful to the villains' ears. Other than that, it's all cheesy.
Art: This depends on how you look at it. To me, the dresses for Lucia, Hanon, and Rina are full of many colors! (Practically every shade of pink, aqua, and green respectively.) On the other hand, the characters' appearances are okay, except it's too overdone. (I.e. Doumoto Kaito with the most repetitive hairstyle of any Bishounen.)
Sound: What I found unusual was that Lucia's voice is different compared to other Magical Girl heroines. While their voices are high-pitched, Lucia's is lower, unless you count her screaming. Hanon and Rina sound okay. The MMPPP songs can really get to you, even though they're all about love.
Character: This is what bugs me. Basically, the Mermaids' objective is to unite the Seven Mermaid Princesses in order to defeat the enemy. The problem is, for 52 episodes straight, ONLY LUCIA, HANON, AND RINA APPEAR THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SEASON!! What about the other four? Well, Caren appears halfway through the season, but she distances herself from them. Noel and Coco were captured so they're stuck with the enemy until the finale. And Sara is a good guy turned bad. Wow. (Did they expect girls to love the main trio more than the four Mermaids in the back?)
Enjoyment: IT WILL GET ANNOYING. At some point, you'll realize that there's too many fillers. Luckily, Wikipedia has already identified the episodes important to the storyline so you can figure it out from there.
Overall: Obviously the ending was anticipated. When the last episode first aired, it was already confirmed that a second season, Pure, would be in the works. (Personally I liked Pure more than this season.) It was an okay anime, it did introduce me to all the beautiful songs in MMPPP. Still, there were obvious flaws that could've been fixed.

Lets get one thing straight; Mermaid melody is not for everybody. In fact, I would wager that most adults (especially males) would find this series cringe worthy.
However, if you like magical girl series and cute character driven stories, I believe that Mermaid Melody might just be right for you. Keep in mind that the target audience of the seres is very young, but an older person can still enjoy it.
The baseline story isn't very complex, which is fine. It is essentially about mermaid princesses who are temporarily living on land who fight the evils dwelling below the sea....with music. For some known reason, singing drives just about any bad guy crazy, so these mermaids transform into super soldiers and put on musical performances to defeat the bad guys.
What really makes the show worth watching is the character interactions. Each girl meets certain people on land that help shape who she is in different ways, and some of these interactions result in love, heartache, etc. There are a lot of "fillers" in the show, but I would argue that a lot of these fillers often have something to do with the lives and personalities of the characters, and in that way, I believe Mermaid Melody has some very slice of life qualities. Most of these episodes unrelated to the plot are actually fun to watch, and usually used as a device to set up romantic turmoil between the main character Lucia and her love interest Kaito.
Beyond this, every single character in the show (no matter how small the role) is given episodes to develop her character. Even the bad guys have episodes/scenes created to humanize them and make them likable. Since Mermaid Melody is a kids show (targeted at kids between 6-15 I'd say) most of these villains arn't very threatening and it is overall an incredibly non violent and light hearted show.
My one real issue with the series is that the music is recycled every episode. Since the girls sing to defeat their enemies, they often use the same songs over and over again. While these songs are cute and catchy, you get sick of them fast. I'd say the best thing you can do at that point is fast forward when you see the girls ready to go into j-pop mode. It's really not a big deal.
The art is simply adorable, and perfect for a young girl's show. I am surprised how clean it looks given that the show is fairly old. It's nothing special at all, but it is nice.
Mermaid Melody is a show best enjoyed if you want to watch something simple, light hearted, and fun. It's never going to be one of those universally respected anime, but it has some great qualities that should not be overlooked. read more

It's pretty much the same. Romance, Magical Girls and comedy. Tokyo Mew Mew is turning into cats (or other animals) and Mermaid Melody is turning into mermaids. They're REALLY like. I had to think of Tokyo Mew Mew when I was watching Mermaid Melody. Only difference is probably that they're singing in MM.
they are both in the genre of mahou shoujo*magical girl*
their alike in like a million different ways so if you like mermaid melody:pichi pichi pitch you will like tokyo mew mew ^^
As in the mermaid legend story there are a group of girls who have power and transform to fight evil. They all have their own specific power or color or position in the group. Also involves a love story between the main character and boyfriend who always is there to help or gets in trouble. The main bad guy and the boyfriend are mysteriously related in some way. The boyfriend has secret powers as well. Saving the world is the whole plot.
Both are typical "girly" animes with the middle school romance thing to it and both of them have the really soft core fighting theme. The animation in both are also pretty similar.
They are both Magic-girl animes.
-Both involve girls changing into there "super" forms and fighting evil. In TokyoMew the girls "super" forms involve whatever animal they can attributes from. In MerMel the "super" forms are mermaids.
-Both have LOTS of cheese and a lot if it is found in the attacks and how the evil is defeated
-Both of the main girls have love complications but unlike Tokyo Mew Mew the complications in MerMel continue in to the next series Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure(which wasn't that good compared to the first one) luckily the complications are with the same guy, bad/funny/entertaining news: the main girl has to seduce him all over again because he has no idea who she is.
-Both are littler kids shows but its good for a laugh for those of us over the age of 10
The both have the magicgirl-thing in it. In Tokyo Mew Mew are the animals with special powers, in Memaid Melody are the singing mermaids. The have bith the goodie-goodie and cute thing in them and the main characters are the same, cheerfull and happy. I don't really like this kind of thing but enjoy.
Similar idea, magic girl, similar characters. Characters in both animes transform (To mermaid in Mermaid Melody, to various animals in Tokyo Mew Mew). Both have the whole hero-villain thing that the younger audience of anime could enjoy for it's not at all bloody... The villains in both animes start off as not too much of a threat, and slowly get more serious. Both animes have characters with some sort of power. Both of the main males in the series.. well, I won't give it away. Just very similar animes.

Transformation sequences, glittery battles, and an all-girl team of superheroes. Heck, even one of the MM:PPP villians looks strinkingly similar to Queen Beryl from Sailor Moon.
One idiot girl, one handsome boy, 82748294 other girls that together with the first girl fight the evil, and some kind of romance.
-Love stories
-About magical princess girls
-Somewhat similar plots
-Character similarities
They are both Magic-Girl animes.
In both series there are a group of teenage girls fighting evil. You will soon see the similarities when you see Lucia Nanami in her Idol Form. In Sailor Moon they use elements and such to attack, but in Mermaid Melody they sing to defeat their enemies. I recommend both series. Just a warning if you enjoy the first series of Mermaid Melody, I do not recommend they 2nd series.
