Evangelion is the main source of inspiration for Rahxephon, many consider it a clone. Evangelion tends to be more complex and intellectual, concentrating on philosophy and psychology while Rahxephon tends to be easier and not so intelligent concentrating on a love story with harem like influences.

Both are mecha shows set in a post-apocalyptic backdrop with large, alien enemies and similar themes.

The Director of Eureka 7 (Tomoki Kyoda) was also involved as Assistant Director for Rahxephon, and both series share a lot in common. Rahxephon, like Eureka 7, is also a "character-driven" mecha which I'd highly recommend to anyone who likes a good love story with giant robots thrown in, or a giant robot story with a love story thrown in - take your pick, you win either way.

The stories themselves are hardly similar, but there is an air of desperation in both of them. The main characters are both teenagers thrown into fighting before they know what they're fighting for; both characters have skills that cannot be compared to anyone around them. Ayato who pilots Rahxephon and must tune the world, and Kira who pilots a gundam and is considered the ultimate coordinator.

Both are made by Bones, they take place at a southern island and revolve around strange looking mecha. There is also a certain painting that most likely will catch your eye.
report Recommended by AfterGlow
Both RahXephon and Persona have the main character thrown into a situation which requires them to fight for, at first, somewhat unknown reasons. However, RahXephon is more serious than Persona.
report Recommended by SY_IS_DEAD_IRL
Both animes share an almost similar plot, although Dual Parallel! has a more comedic and light atmosphere whereas RahXephon leans more on the psychological and dramatic side. Both animes share awesome looking mechs and a variety of your typical yet awesome characters in a would-be sci-fi/mech series.
report Recommended by yunadestined
Both are sci-fi with lots of mecha battles and very similar in their conflicts on what is reality and what is not. Rahxephon has enclosed spaces separate from the outside world where people live oblivious to the actual situation outside of these zones, in which humankind is battling the enemy. They are similar in appearance to the Deutera areas but conceptually like the quantum servers in Zegapain. Also in both anime the enemy appear human though they are not. The main character is in both cases a male and have a love interest.
report Recommended by sillyanna
Both RahXephon and Bokurano deal with children who are tasked with protecting the world from "aliens invading the earth". However, things are not quite that simple in either show. Both deal with issues of humanity and loss as their respective plots develop.

Aside that boyh have the same genre, the premise is very similar too: Main character goes into this new world (74 years in the future or out of the dome thingy), and their relationships with their new aquitances is very similar in both of them (Main female aside).

Angels vs Humans.... fighting for survival and annihilation. With action, mecha, and romance; these two animes are worthy of watching if you like the combination of these genres.

End of the World Scenario, Strong characters

Both have a similar animation (same producers), the same atmosphere, complicated story, related genres

Mecha style and alien invaders similar in some respects to Eva and RahXephon.
report Recommended by lisnoire
Both series feature a main male character who doesn't seem to "belong" in their current situation and both are the "chosen ones". Both include mecha. If you like one then you should definitely watch the other.
report Recommended by Yoruichi
Both have beautiful imagery and music (with openings composed by Yoko Kano). Intrigues, romance and fantasy are elements that are present in the plot. They also revolve around godlike mecha and the inner journey to find a place in the world.
report Recommended by anie
its not actually the person who's the weapon but the only pilot possible for the ultimate weapon in Rahxephon. There's a romance thing going on too...
report Recommended by Guybrush
Extremely similar animes ... Both have the same main factors, which are: Stop the invasion of aliens; Protagonists "monster"; Difficulties with the robot, etc. Only after watching both do you realize the extreme resemblance.I think Darling has more inspiration in RahXephon than in Evangelion.

Another Mecha ANime against 2 warring factions. One for good one for bad. Better storyline than code geass IMO
report Recommended by Ranivus
Early 2000's shows with very attractive character designs and just interesting visuals in general. Both have basically nonsensical (sometimes laughable) storylines, with weird sibling connections, female harems, mecha-esque creatures figthing aliens and some existential monologues (usually about being an alien or not).
report Recommended by DsMasterBR
Both are lighthearted post-NGE mecha anime that act as reconstructions of the genre. The main character of each show joins an organization through circumstances that result in them pursuing a career prior to the one that they want to (Ayato Kamina of RahXephon wants to be a painter; Akito Tenwaka of Nadesico wants to be a cook), and both are mecha pilots who have a woman (Haruka in RahXephon, Yurika in Nadesico) who obviously has feelings for them (although Yurika is MUCH more open about her feelings for Akito than Haruka is with her feelings for Ayato). There are a few differences, however - RahXephon  read more

Psychological shows on science-fiction settings where a young man discovers a reality beyond the city he lieves, and realised who he really is through a journey full of mind-fuckery episodes.

Fate Zero and Rahxephon have what's in common: -Both have reconstructed elements that were derived from the deconstruction of a certain series (UBW and Evangelion) -Stories that revolve around the war that pits between humans and fictional beings -surprising and unexpected deaths -have both a seemingly positive mood and a more importantly dark mood
report Recommended by SlaughterDagger
Many people claim Madoka the deconstruction of a magical girls genre but in reality, in it's hidden message, it too is a reconstruction just like Rahxephon. Both dark series have a protagonist whose clouded background have something to do with the plot and surprisingly death tolls hit heavy that will destroy the viewer's positive mood. If you like Evangelion, why not try out Rahxephon?
report Recommended by SlaughterDagger
Like Guilty Crown, Rahxephon too is highly influenced by Evangelion. Unlike Evangelion, both GC and Rahxephon has whats in common for them, a young ordinary high school teenager who lives his daily life only to end up encountering a mysterious girl who would end up forever changing his life into a conflict never before this big. Japan is the main setting in both shows as both are invaded by super sentient beings/powers and powerful organizations opposed by the other organization. Both Shu and Kamina holds the key to the fate of the world. To surprise you, at first the story in both shows are going  read more

Apart from Attack on Titan Evangelion comparison, I also find Rahxephon the true child of Evangelion as opposed to Attack On Titan being the mixture of it. Regardless AoT & Rahxephon are a story about the world that would later be invaded by Titans/Dolems with an opposing organization (Wall/Terra). Both Eren and Kamina hold the key to defeating them as well as solving the mysteries behind the creatures. To go into the characters, Eren is more of a brat/shonen character archetype while Kamina is more developed and positive. What stands out to me in both series is that Rahxephon is the reconstruction of Evangelion by  read more

Ever since I thought about how Rahxephon is to Evangelion in terms of reconstruction & deconstruction, I've been thinking the same thing for Valvrave and CG & GC. Both Valvrave and Rahxephon are reconstruction of their perspective series but the only difference is that: Rahxephon examines the dark and serious sensibilities of the series Valvrave fixes the mistakes of the heroes of Code Geass and Guilty Crown

Both Yugioh 5Ds and RahXephon are reconstructions of specific things - 5Ds is a reconstruction of the Yugioh anime series (which had been deconstructed in GX), and RahXephon is a reconstruction of the Mecha genre (which had been deconstructed in Neon Genesis Evangelion). Also, I can't help but compare Yusei Fudo with Ayato Kamina (when Ayato is in a positive mood, anyway).

Robots, aliens, a dude MC that tries to score with a girl and also have to save earth. high fiction!
report Recommended by Berry-Vodka
MCs deal against invaders who are humans specially distinct from their race in a battle for survival of the fittest. Both shows are beautiful in an artistic direction & music is well composed to the degree it adds up to the powerful and shocking moments of the series. Writing is splendid and I can't help but compare Attack on Titan to be somewhat of the deconstruction what Rahxephon reconstructed Evangelion deconstructed.

both are set in japan after a massive catastrophe. in both there's a giant living mecha that is something akin to a deity. the plot revolves around the conflict between humans of earth and those from "the other side".
report Recommended by sillyfang
Both stories are about a younger male and an older female who fall in love with each other and both stories have a happy ending
report Recommended by TheAnimeVillain
in both, catastrophic explosion caused a mysterious area to appear, impossible to enter by regular means. at the same time, new type of humans revealed themselves, which sparked a long lasting conflict. in both, main character is forced to join an organization and use his powers against his own kin.
report Recommended by sillyfang
both are inspired by evangelion, despite that Gasaraki in the north american anime media scene 'claimed' that the show somehow was inspired to be better than evangelion, i think till that Rax still has so far the upperhand in better coherent storytelling and being closer by a big margin to evangelion. both have an sort of complexity in chara background and their connection to their mecha, gasaraki is more mostly more militairy-machine oriented than the ' otherworldly mecha' story it wants to tell.

Both Yugioh Arc-V like 5Ds and RahXephon are reconstructions of specific things - Arc-V is a reconstruction of the Yugioh anime series (which had been deconstructed throughout the course of the series), and RahXephon is a reconstruction of the Mecha genre (which had been deconstructed in Neon Genesis Evangelion). Also, I can't help but compare Yuya Sakaki with Ayato Kamina (specifically role-wise and personality).
report Recommended by WingZeroRequiem
both series have giant robots. a mysterious character that is part of the team but no one knows where it came from another even most misterious character that just watches them and then vanishes. both have a very simmilar atmosphere where there is a lot secrets kept away from the characters and they slowly start figuring out what is really going on
report Recommended by abyss_will
Rahxephon like Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer reconstructs the tropes that Evangelion deconstructed but in a much better way with better plot and storytelling something which satisfies viewers who were salty about the way Evangelion went through and then ended. Similarities include invaders invading another planet and an emo protagonist who undergo trials and battles to save the world from danger.
report Recommended by WingZeroRequiem
Both shows are reconstruction on the genre that was deconstructed from their similar counterpart: Rahxephon from Evangelion-Mecha Kill La Kill from Magoka-Magical Girls
report Recommended by WingZeroRequiem
Both shows feature surprisingly dark moments, which starkly contrast with the overall light message that the 2 shows start out with. Also, both shows are "smart" anime in their respective genre - both are very character driven (RahXephon would not have the plot it has without Ayato Kamina piloting the RahXephon, whereas Hunter x Hunter's entire plot revolves around Gon trying to find Ging, his father), and both have shocking deaths that you will not expect.
report Recommended by RoarkTenjouin
Both have the same feeling of a city over run by a large massive supernatural sphere where anonymous large demons/human beasts invade cities and cause destruction. Coincidentally, the same male seiyuu plays the main character (Hiro Shimono) in each series.
report Recommended by Mr_DaftPunk
They both have the same atmosphere and polish. Both are must watch anime series for any mecha/romance fan out there.
report Recommended by arimakenshin
If you loved the role of music in Nodame Cantabile and want to experience an anime series that shares the theme in a completely different genre, then RahXephon is a must watch. Despite being a mecha anime series, music plays a central role in setting the atmosphere and representing characters' emotions and actions throughout the anime series.

Both of these shows are about a teenager who is the only one capable of piloting an incredibly powerful mecha. Mithril and Terra have some similarities as organizations, and if you watch the English dubs there are a lot of voice actors in common.

Love stories across worlds seem to define both shows, though their execution is very different
report Recommended by slax
Both are similarly mysterious adventures involving aliens with a similar layout and cinematography style.

It's all there; the young boy recruited by the organization protecting earth to pilot a mecha only he can operate, the alien invaders threatening the planet with their own strange mecha, the renegade alien helping the humans, the tropical island setting, the xenophobia, the singing, the traitorous superior working against the lead

Reideen 2007 by Production I.G. (who did Ghost in the Shell TV series, it's predecessor Reideen series were the prototype for Rahxephon. The new Reideen has a character similar to Mishima Reika, but Reideen's character does a lot more and is a lot more involved in the main character's life. Reideen does lack the brain trip/psychological exploration factor, and it's more like a beautifully done CG update of the classic giant robot series. It at least, isn't concept heavy like Eva, Rahxephon, or Gasaraki.

Both animes are serious and introspective, more dedicated to work with character development and psychological aspects. The difference is that Macross Zero has more adrenaline, the air battles can let you out of breathe easily. RahXephon has magnificent battles too, but it focus more on dialogues and storyline.

- Same Studio Bones - Director Kyouda Tomoki directed all of the E7 franchise and the Rahxephon Movie (being a summary movie to the TV show with alternate ending, which is a bit more grounded and less "esotheric-mysterious" than the main show) - elaborate mecha designs in both shows - near future Science Fiction - both contain episodes about identity/trauma issues, which slightly step out of line as they have more of a tone of dementia/mindfuck compared to the other episodes - main character share the common theme of finding a place where to belong, after loosing their initial home, which however didn't really feel like a true home - both  read more

These two shows are both on the darker side of the super robot genre, focussing on the flaws of the hero and the thoroughly broken characters surrounding him. Ayato is distinctly more likeable than the protagonist of Zeorymer, but no less disturbed.

Both Gilgamesh and RahXephon have to do with remaking the world. In both stories the protagonists seek to keep the world as it was and the antagonists seek to create a new one. I won't say more so as not to spoil either of them. However, it is important to note that in terms of story line, animation style, atmosphere, and setting, these two are drastically different.

Want to watch a somewhat typical love triangle story in a futuristic mecha setting? A story with complex set up, and does not fail spectacularly in its conclusion? With a plot that involves alien invasion? Watch RahXephon and Macross Frontier!

Let me be clear, in terms of story, characters, tone, and morals, these two have practically nothing in common. The reason i still make this recommendation is because both are anime that revolve around music. In Cowboy Bebop, the OST is incredible and highly composed of jazz, the names of the episodes are references to actual songs and artists, and the characters themselves are like jazz, by which i mean that they're cool, unpredictable, and move with a certain flow. In RahXephon the OST is also great though in this case composed of mostly classical, the concept is somewhat the idea of music changing the  read more

Both of these series involving an invasion to a planet where the main characters fights back . The main male protagonist becomes a force as he takes charge on dealing with the invaders alongside others characters . There is a state of warfare as humanity fight for survival.

Both anime are mecha, or have mecha but dont concentrate on it so much. More are about the characters' psychological state and what they been through. And both main characters are searching fro something -Differences: Gun X Sword is a Western, RahXephon is a scifi. - Both have great animation and OST Both will make you cry and/or go wtf!
report Recommended by pantythief666
The stories themselves are hardly similar, but there is an emotional atmosphere in each world's creation through how the characters live and react to situations. Rahxephon is also a "character-driven" story which I highly recommend if you enjoy a female cast that has more depth than just being a potential love interest to the main character.
report Recommended by gindorobo
Both are mecha anime involving manipulative mothers using their children for their agendas. However, the protagonists have different reactions to their mothers' manipulativeness that nicely contrast with each other. In G-Witch, Suletta has been conditioned to believe and do everything her mother Prospera says and has yet to display any hesitation or rebellion. In RahXephon, Ayato becomes very mistrusting of his mother Maya after a major incident.

They both have surreal and deep, spiritual elements. Angel's Egg is very dark, while RahXephon is lighter. Both involve characters discovering themselves and the world around them.

The major similarity between the two anime are their storylines, which are both based on destiny. The focus of each is to depict how the characters play into their fate. Minor similarities include warfare in space (which is more in Heroic Age) and a healthy depiction of the protagonist and his interaction with other people. Both have similar rates of plot revelation. The key difference in their depictions is that Heroic Age almost fixates on action and warfare, whereas RahXephon takes you through complex inter- and intra- character social relationships. The roles of characters are different in the two anime. You would not have to worry about knowing what's  read more

While RahXephon is a mecha, it shares the same question with Paranoia Agent of trying to figure what's real and what's an illusion. Giving a case study of our protagonist trying to understand his life.

both shows have militairy and (geo) political organizations that have their own agenda to face the threat,an non-human entity that wants merge everything. the ending of the show is simmilair to me because of the villian transformation and the scream-singing just like in rahx. there is some mecha-human fusion in bubblegum crisis but in a small way, in rahx its almost a prominent thing for a " dolem' to sing while operated.
